Hello everyone. I've been listening to some prog rock for a few years now, and although I've probably enjoyed it more than any other genre out there, I really haven't taken the time to explore it. And now, I want some suggestions on which bands should I start exploring, and which to wait a bit as I continue to enjoy the history of prog rock.
I'm always listening to King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and my personal favorite band (The Mars Volta [although this can be debated in terms of prog rock])
I used to enjoy Yes, but it kind of got old to me. However, I really only listened to Fragile, so that's probably why.
So now where should I go?

RPI - Rock Progressivo Italiano. So much to discover and love - unique and still familiar, rough and yet smooth, celestial and yet earthbound.
Check it out!

If Fragile is the extent of your experience with Yes, there is lots to explore. I'd suggest starting with Relayer....
Emerson Lake and Palmer...just go ahead and get Brain Salad Surgery, Trilogy and Tarkus...

Hi JBass! All of the other genres you see here are just foreplay for the Italian Prog. So have a little fun with Canterbury and Metal, then get to the good stuff (I'm just kidding you guys, don't have a cow)
As for Yes, Fragile is not adequate explorartion. Make sure to hear a good sampling of their 70s work, everything from Drama backwards is pretty good to GREAT.

Go West, young man, like your family said.
By the way, be sure and avail yourself of the streaming tracks on here. I credit them with my discovery of Talisma, Pure Reason Revolution, The Reasoning, Hellborg's Art Metal, The Pineapple Thief, No Sound, Phideaux...

Don't limit yourself. There is so much prog around you. Pick a band from each sub-genre and listen their highest rated cd. From there look into that bands sub-genre and pick another..and so on..do this with a few bands..don't limit yourself.

Good suggestion. I went through the top 100 list looking at artists I hadn't tried, gave Supertramp a try, and was glad I did.

Pay attention to him, and follow his suggestion
I am sure you can change your current direction, because if your fav band are TMV, then you already are in the wrong one.

Your statement is kind of confusing me. Please explain.
And yeah, I've been looking at all the top bands in each category. I definitely love those top artists lists.

If you like traditional prog and have not listened to early Genesis, definitely go there. Selling England and Foxtrot are my suggestions to start with.
And if you're looking for something really soothing, try Mr. Bungle's _Disco Volante_ (it's brilliant but don't start there)
What a friend of mine suggested to me, is go to pandora radio, create a radio station with bands you like, and see where it leads you. I've discovered some great stuff that way.
------------- You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I cannot express enough thanks to all of you for giving me suggestions...and even more to those who have contributed to this site. I've been overwhelmed by the number of amazing bands listed on this site. And I'm sadly far, far from finishing my journey. :)

The journey is NEVER finished. Every time I think I've painted myself into a corner I realize that there's worlds and worlds of music I've never even thought about.

How could I know where you should go if I don´t even know you! Go and find out how much wonderful music is out tere, not only prog. No one told me what I should listen to, and the same should apply to everyone.

hahahha.. I think he was looking for suggestions... not an invite to have the doggie collar put on and have our forum members don leather and grab whips and subject him to esquiste pain in the forms of listening to Genesis learn to play their insturments as they worked their way through the 70's

I hear Echolyn are also a good place to go if you enjoy Gentle Giant.

Seems your taste is for more elaborate Prog, so I recommend you:
1.- Van Der Graff Generator
2.- Henry Cow
3.- Fantomas
4.- Par Lindh Project
5.- Anglagard
Cheers and keep on Proggin'
Iván

I was going to suggest Anglagard as well, Iván but the availability of their two albums is almost non-existent (unless you want to pay silly prices).
