I've been heavily on The Smiths/The Cure/Joy Division/Talk Talk for last 9 months or even more, and recently discovered Cocteau Twins and The Chameleons, another amazing band...I guess The Church and Kate Bush are also something I should check then. Ok, your suggestions on 'intellectual New Wave'? What I shouldn't miss?

Someone mentioned Christian Death. While they aren't technically post-punk/new wave, I'd definitely recommend checking them out, especially if you enjoy the Joy Division/The Church type of stuff. Their first album is great, though their second album, "Catastrophe Ballet" is my personally favorite. Musically it shares a lot in common with the darker side of neo-prog (especially Arena). Lots of cool and "spooky" hooks.

I'd say its Post-Punk that overlaps with with the whole Deathrock/Goth movement, kind of like Bauhaus (who I forgot to mention!) Christian Death's Only Theater of Pain, is one of the most twisted and offensive albums ever made! Their other stuff is great too like like Catastrophe Ballet and Ashes, I even like some of the Valor albums like Atrocities, Sex Drugs and Jesus Christ, etc, Christian Death has somewhat of a complicated history though,

by parallax view...
... while Joy Division and The Smiths are not remotely Prog in themselves, several bands in Post Rock and Crossover Prog where directly influenced by their sober melancholy and morose outlook and even some Progressive Metal bands have listed both as influence. While I would not go as far as to say that any of the bands suggested here should (or even would be) considered for Prog Related, it is without doubt that they have seriously affected the way in which a lot of later bands developed, including a lot of Progressive bands.

Check out the Damned's "phantasmagoria" album. Their early albums are great, pure punk fun and madness, but "Phantasmagoria" was made during their "new wave" "goth" phase. Its great.

Manchester music scene of the mid/late 70's..... and didn't the movie Control suggest members of Joy Division and the book Jon Savage's England's Dreaming suggest Morrissey were both present and influenced by the Sex Pistols first Manchester gig - and somewhere in there we have to include the Buzzcocks and Tony Wilson????

Given the fact that Joy Division were influenced by Can, Neu!, Roxy Music, Bowie, Doors and Kraftwerk it is not surprising to hear krautrock/art rock in their records. Martin Hannett was a producer who pushed them and wanted their records to have a unique atmosphere. I always thought quite a few of their songs - Day of the Lords, New Dawn Fades and Decades - are very ambitious given the self-imposed limitations many other bands of their day adhered to. Listening to Dead Souls again there is a 2:10 lead in before the vocals even come on. They certainly knew how to take their time to build up tension and emotion.
I'm also surprised no one hasn't mentioned the only guy who ever made the Prog to Punk crossover, Mr. Peter Hammill. Nadir's Big Chance is great fun and has plenty of attitude and even some hooks. I think his existentialism/nihlism made it possible to go this route where say, Peter Gabriel, counldn't. That and the fact that we wasn't successful enough where he thought that he couldn't take chances.

Early Simple Minds certainly fits the bill for post-punk. The incredible "Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call" was produced by Steve Hillage, so there's your prog connection.
