Two somewhat love/hate bands here... this one should definitely be interesting. The masters of pretension in the 70s or today... which do you like more and why?

Hmmmmm. How long do I have to think about this? I'm kind of leaning towards The Flower Kings but I expect dusting off ELP and respinning them could change my mind. -------------

Will take a listen to TFK's samples with an open mind, at least, but I will be very, very, very surprised if they somehow edge it over Emerson's sublime piano and the general force of ELP. Think I've wandered their way before, probably, but don't remember them that well. Still... I'll listen... see what happens. |

| TFK for me. If you would ask me which is a better/innovative band, I would definitely have to admit that ELP is way more innovative and better. But for preference, then TFK for me. They're more up to my taste. |

I am not voting yet as my first 2 faves (MO and GONG )lost...so i am not bringing bad luck to my selection but as I notice my fave is already trailing 1-6, Seiously, nothing beats TARKUS!

I was sad to see Area go up against Gong -- both favourite bands of mine, and neither would I want eliminated. As For MO, voting for it was much easier for me (a no-brainer) and sorry that it lost. I'm not the biggest ELP fan these days, but I still greatly prefer it to The Flower Kings. ------------- Just a fanboy passin' through. |

ELP makes febus romantic, you see, with a glass of Pomerol in one hand and silky sands of St-Barth between his toes , all he can envision is that Love Beach cover and that troubling caribbean prog inside

I need me plenty of guitar in my prog so TFK all the way. And TFK is much more consistent in their output. No Love Beaches or Works Vol 2 in their discography.

He does have a point  .I really can't vote. I've only heard ELP, Tarkus and BSS, so I can't really pass judgment on ELP, and for TFK I've only heard the new album and Unfold The Future, only the latter of which I really like. So I vote Rush  |

one side of it is garbage... one side is not.... if you listen to people... and is ALL garbage. I'll maybe take the trek to listen to that one side one of these days. Not sure. It's just like choosing between Gabriel-era Genesis and Collins-era Genesis. Collins-era I'd hardly ever pull out, if at all anymore, but it's still better than most crap out there. -------------

ELP for sure. Still haven't gotten into TFK that much, but ELP's first 5 classics just can't be beat.

If it would have been called Evil Beach , different cover (black Geiger artwork again), would it fare better do you think? Idea for a thread : albums that would be better with a different cover. .Imagine the 2 Roxy babes from your avatar or the cover from SIREN for LOVE BEACH .......would have been by now the ELP best selling.album
......and of course would be featured in the top 10 PA all time-best prog albums list! |

You really ask me to compare the Flower Kings to ELP? Hmm, let me think about it.. to me:
-ELP are masters of their instruments, can rock without a guitar-player, have great suites, long instrumental parts which sometimes end up in insane key solos. And they have three of my favourite albums.
-the Flower Kings are.. well.. average to me.. I do not like anything about them, sure they are capable players and Roine Stolt is a good song writer, but it is nothing special to my ears. Also, they sound to much 70's (yes, I draw the comparison I hate). Originality is certainly not their strong point. The instrumental parts seem to much "uncontrolled"..
So, ELP, without a doubt. Yet if I was to vote who has the more consistent discography, it would be the Flower Kings. ELP have many great albums and songs. And they have.. well, the others..

OK... TFK samples going... Big Puzzle - remember liking it much more than I'd expected to. Guitars quite good, all round decent. One instrumental section felt a tad pointless. All-round quite nice. There Is More To This World - a little less enjoyable from my perspective, feeling a little messy, especially on the keys. Again, the guitar work was the most memorable part. The rather Yes-like soft section in the middle wasn't too bad, either. Got a bit repetitive and annoying after a while, though. In The Eyes Of The World - quite a quirky opening, some tension was managed nicely in the chaotic guitar bit. Vocals and some of the percussion didn't really work that much for me but otherwise a good piece. Will listen to the fourth one later. |

Well, it does seem decided, and I'd like to close it down... but it has only been two days since I posted the initial post, so I think I should wait at least another 24 hours probably. I'm not sure. I didn't expect results to flow in this quickly for these polls. -------------

As far as I'm concerned, ELP was tremendously inconsistent and pretentious in a bad way (their pretension often didn't yield anything spectacular or memorable long-term). The Flower Kings albums are often hit and miss too, but I can count on at least 2/3 of the record to be worth listening to or better, and I can't say that about ELP. "Karn Evil 9" is the only ELP song I still listen to. But hey it seems I'm in the minority. I should have figured, considering the 70's always wins here. ------------- www.last.fm/user/ThisCenotaph
