The BBC is saying a short battle, which arguably is preferable.

I think that had it been a long battle news of it would have slipped out by now and it seems to be news to everyone here.

Sadly that means the Live 8 performance really was the end of Floyd.

Excellent idea. Rick's piano solos were understated but unforgettable. Just think of the things he does on tracks like "San Tropez" or "Us and Them": subtle but highly refined. Thanks for all the magnificent music, Rick!

Terribly sad news. It's a shock because nobody new. The BBC says he had a short illness, which is probably a mercy. In the many interviews with him I've seen he always came across as a thoroughly decent bloke with no superstar ego at all. Remember that he was a superstar of the keyboards, his simple but effective style was a leading part in Floyd's success.

I've always loved his keyboards on "Sheep" so I will go and play that now.

Our dearest Richard Wright, besides being a gentleman, a serene person and a warm soul, was also a relevant musician/writer/arranger for some of the greatest moments in the best ages of PF (from "Ummagumma" to "Animals"). Either as a writer or an arranger, the big presence of layers, harmonies, ornaments and subtle solos on his ever changing arsenal of keyboards (Farfisa, Hammond, grand and electric pianos, mellotron, ARP, Moog and VCS3 synths, clavinet) are proof that his input was crucial for the creation and development of what now is known as "the Floydian style". Name any big moment in PF's repertoire, be it psychedelic, space-rock, prog, experimental blues-oriented rock, acoustic pastoral, Wright's performance was there as a real asset for the entire quartet's sound.

Thank You For The Music, Master Rick, Shine On!!!

"We were cut off from our lives, by a wall of pain,
It can't be seen, it's so routine, it has no face or name.

But now the day has broken, can see in better ways,
A path leading to the light, a hope that never fades.
All power to the brave.

You feel her warmth, feel it like solar rays,
See how, they kindle fire, illuminate her face.

Free as the sunlight that shines down from above,
That opens us all to feel love "

I am deeply shocked and filled with sadness at this news. Not only was Rick a keyboard pioneer in the genre of psychedelic music, his contribution to progressive rock was overwhelming. His influence ranges far and wide in prog, from electronic groups like Tangerine Dream, to the whole space-rock/prog sub-genre with groups like Hawkwind and Porcupine Tree, to name a few. I am so grateful that I saw PF in concert with Rick and Roger Waters in '75 and '79. His work on "Echoes," and on the beginning of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" will stay with me forever. To me he was always an underrated keyboardist, but I believe if it wasn't for Rick, the music would not be the same now. It's now his turn to shine brightly in the heavens. Cry

His solo input for the second half of "Ummagumma" is a delicious example of the introduction of avant-garde chmaber music in psychedelic rock in teh early stages of prog rock.

Talking about poneering moments, I'm sure this 4-part opus was a role model for many people soon to be part of the prog rock movement.

oh, how lucky!

I mainly have a VHS of their concert in Earl's Court, a friend in Germany recorded it live, but my family had to wait some time to purchase a VHS player. It was my initiation in Pink Floyd music, and it captures one of the most fabulous rock solos ever (Comfortably Numb, a track in which Wright sings Cry).

His musical contributions were at times beautiful, at times spacy, and at times wonderfully eerie (his early-career psychedelic organ playing--which is also underrated).  His peaceful vocals (along with David's) created the warm comfort that Pink Floyd would cast upon its listeners.  He also seemed like an extremely humble, down-to-earth guy (as others have already mentioned).

His influence and music will surely live on!

Many keyboardists could play his parts, yet he was the only one to write such music, which seemed humble, yet every tone spoke volumes. This day really matches the end of Pink Floyd, without him they are just David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Nick Mason in various variants of power.

Astronomy domines for Rick now.

I want to add my most shocked, heartfelt condolences.  I agree with others that his contribution - not only to Floyd, but to psychedelic rock keyboard in general - cannot be overestimated.  He was a true pioneer, and, along with Michael Pindar and a couple of others, absolutely "defined" the keyboard sound of prog rock for decades.

As an aside, I was priviliged to have met Rick some years ago, and had dinner with him, Chris Squire and Peter Grant.  Rick was not simply a wildly influential keyboardist, he was also a truly charming, funny and humble man.  Although I have always cherished my "celeb" memories, this one now feels even more haunting and powerful.

We will miss you, Rick.  Thanks for the decades of amazing music.

Peace.

I am absolutely shocked and devestated by his death, awful day for Prog rock fans and Pink Floyd fans.

Truly a pioneer and one of the best keyboard players I have ever heard.

RIP Rick shine on, sad loss. DisapproveCry
