Top 5 Proto Prog Albums!!!!!!!!!

These are the albums that began the prog movement in rock and all prog bands owe their allegiance to these incredible artists who were innovative before innovation was a key word in prog.

Lets start with mine - I have them all and this was easy as the first ones that popped into my skull were

1 Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band - Beatles
2 Who's Next - The Who
3 Days of Future Passed - Moody Blues
4 Made In Japan - Deep Purple
5 The Doors - The Doors

Special mention to the track 'In A Gadda Da Vida' - Iron Butterfly

Hmmm.  From the bands listed on the prog archives as proto prog:

The Who - Who's Next
Beatles - Abbey Road
Its a Beautiful Day - Its a Beutiful Day
Deep Purple - In Rock
Jefferson Airplane - After Bathing at Baxters

1. Beatles - Revolver
2. Procol Harum - Procol Harum
3. Beatles - Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
4. The Doors - The Doors
5. Surrealistic Pillows - Jefferson Airplane

As you'll have seen, all of the above are from before 1969. That year King Crimson released In The Court Of The Crimson King - and the term Proto-Prog, if taken seriuosly, could no longer be used.

Well, lemme think...

1. Quadropheania...is a cheat, good sir, a cheat, since the Who did this in NINETEEN SEVENTY FRIGGIN' THREE. Anyways, Quad is still among my absolute favorite albums of all time, so give it some props no less.

2. Strange Days...is just about the most perfect album ever. Everything flows perfectly, all the songs are good, the concept is solid but the variety is there too, even the cover fits the mood. If only it weren't so short...

3. Procol Harum...had a debut. And it was amazing. Quite possibly the most underrated band of all time...you know, outside of a garage, where the REAL geniuses work.

4. Music in a Doll's House...is an album by Family, which is a band that I did not set out to like, but ended up liking all the same, and this fine, fine album turned out to be one of the best products of the sixties that I'd ever heard. Fancy that.

5. Pets Sounds...has balls of steel it does! Hoo boy. If this album ain't art, then I don't know what is; but no matter what, it's beautiful. It also means that my list starts and ends with albums that really shouldn't be on it! HA!

This is not really my category but after hard thinking I came up with these five. They date from my youth.

1. Burn-Deep Purple
2. In Rock-Deep Purple
3. Grand Hotel-Procol Harum
4. Exotic Birds & Fruit-Procol Harum
5. The Doors-The Doors

Since I don't agree with the archives uidelines for protoprog I will list albums that I see suitable.

1. The Doors -Strange Days
2. Velvet Underground- Velvet Underground & Nico (Not listed in the archives but a lot more progressive than a lot of bands that are!)
3. Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
4. Tim Buckley - Goodbye and Hello (listed as prog folk, released in 1967 so...)
5. The Beatles - Revolver (like proto-protoprog)

...sticking to pre-1970 Proto Prog albums

1. Beatles ~ Magical Mystery Tour EP
2. Kaleidoscope ~ A Tangerine Dream
3. Deep Purple ~ Book Of Taliesyn
4. The Who ~ Tommy
5. It's A Beautiful Day ~ It's A Beautiful Day

However... since many Prog bands started out as Proto, my proto Prog albums from all genres would be:

1. Pink Floyd ~ A Saucerful of Secrets
2. Renaissance ~ Renaissance
3. Tangerine Dream ~ Electronic Meditation
4. Soft Machine ~ The Soft Machine
5. The Moody Blues ~ In Search Of The Lost Chord

Not being particularly well-fed with music of this category, I can't limit myself to the luxury of only listing pre-70s albums. But here they are:

1. The Who - Who's Next
2. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour
3. Deep Purple - In Rock
4. Deep Purple - Fireball
5. The Who - Quadrophenia

1. Doors - Full Circle
2. Deep Purple - Concerto For Group & Orchestra
3. The Who - On Tour

Really do not like this label but .....
1- Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come - Journey
2- Beatles- White Album (personal reasons)
3- Procol Harum- Exotic Birds & Fruit
4- Deep Purple- Machinehead
5- Beatles- Abbey Road

Iron Butterfly's Ball is an interesting choice.  Don't think I'd put in any top 5 list, but In the Time of Our Lives is a pretty good song, as is Soul Experience.  I no longer have the album, but I have a greatest hits that has those two songs and they are above par for the course.  Strange band, that Iron Butterfly.

  1. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (Arthur Brown)
  2. Procol Harum (Procol Harum)
  3. Sweetwater (Sweetwater]
  4. Abbey Road (The Beatles)
  5. The Doors (The Doors)

IMO Tommy is far better than most of this albums, but I don't believe The Who are Proto Prog).

Those are good choices. i was listening to some Procol Harum last night and they are definitely worth a mention esp Salty Dog and First Album and Shine on Brightly. Classic proto prog.

The Nice are worth a mention too!

The Nice are a Symphonic bands, their similarities with
  1. ELP
  2. Refugee

Are so big, that i would be absurd to have them in Proto Prog...While most of the bands were doing mostly an elaborate form of Psyche (90% or more PP bamnds have an obvious Psyche connection), The Nice was doing complex and elaborate re-works on classical music.

That would be Progressive, but it isn't Proto - proto would be tracks like April, Anthem, The Shield and Mandrake Root.

for those in doubt listen to April from 1969:

  3. Quadrophenia........ 1973

There's no way this albums can be Proto Prog, Proto means previous or antecesor, in 1971 Prog already existed, not to say in 1973, both bands should be in Prog Related IMO.

the albums aren't obviously. .the groups are...  but whoever listed them probably just half-assed the question to mean 'top 5 albums by artists listed by the site AS proto-prog'

1- Concerto For Group and Orchestra
2- The Doors
3- The Book of Taliesyn

5- A Quick One

Of course these are Proto Prog albums. If I it was Top 10 albums by bands listed in Proto Prog, then the list would be completely different.......

It is an absolute crime that nobody has mentioned H.P. Lovecraft's debut.  That is easily my favorite proto-prog album.

Days of Future Passed should be on every list.  The only reason for excluding it would be if you consider it the founding album of pure progressive music and thus not proto.

1. The Doors - The Doors.
2. Arthur Brown - The Crazy World of Arthur Brown.
3. Procol Harum - A Salty Dog.
4. Deep Purple - Shades of Deep Purple.
5.  Iron Butterfly - In A Gadda Da Vida.
However, both Electric Ladyland and Disraeli Gears would easily make it in the top three. Since neither band is listed, The Doors would be the logical follow up on my list.

I forgot that Iron Butterfly is on the archives. Embarrassed

Here we have a hope that friendly disagreement, Days of Future Passed is not in my list because I consider it a POP album with artificial Orchestral intros and codas for every song.

The orchestral arrangements never really blend with the central piece, this are only artificial ornaments that can be added or deleted at will without affecting the POP vocation of the album.

Tuesday Afternoon and Nights in White Satin are the perfect examples, I heard a lot of versions by The moody Blues without the Orchestra that don't affect the integrity of the music at all, but gave them the chance to have two top 40 songs.

But, it's only my opinion.

The reason why no one should consider the Velvet Underground because at the core are a three chord 4/4 band with no technical and vocal ability. Noise Rock does not make you a Proto-Prog band. They are Proto-Punk and Avant Rock. They are extremely overrated.

1 Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band - Beatles
2 Who's Next - The Who
3 Days of Future Passed - Moody Blues
4 Made In Japan - Deep Purple
5 The Doors - The Doors

Special mention to the track 'In A Gadda Da Vida' - Iron Butterfly

I think these two bolded can't be called proto-prog albums since they have been released after the prog already established itself, 1971 and 1972 respectively.
