I went to the beach today (my 15-month-old's first time ever- he absolutely loved it), and I got the idea for this topic:

Here is a non-prog "confessional," so to speak.  This is where you tell everyone of a band or song you should be ashamed you like.  I mean the hold-your-head-down-and-change-your-name kind of shame.  The kind of music most everyone here would laugh derisively at you for (but we won't- promise!).

(David Gilmour's On an Island always makes me want to be near the shore, by the way)

So let the confessions begin!

Umm, I think there are already threads on this (but they might be locked due to being ancient).

Umm, I listen to heaps of non prog, flame meEvil Smile

Rage Against The Machine, The Cure, Sonic Youth, , Drive Like Jehu (The last band is considered "Emo" bands, despite being equal parts math rock/post punk/post hardcore... trust me, I hate today's so called "emo" pop punk like everyone else here, but I can dig the early incarnations of emo that was a lot less commercial sounding).

Jeff Buckley, still one of my favorites too.

Can't think of anymore right now.

I love to go to punk and ska shows. They're a lot of fun.

Micheal Jackson is really good IMO.

I love Prince too.

I can dig a good amount of hip hop.

...

I guess that's enough for now. Wink

That reminds me.

Yah, I like punk in general, although mainly particular sub genres.
Post Hardcore, Emo (of the early variety that was heavily influenced by Hardcore and Post Hardcore) and Post Punk.
Generally, I dislike bands like the Sex Pistols, The Ramones and all the extremely simple bands (although I have respect for what they did for helping to push other genres forward, like thrash metal for example).

Prince is a friggin genius so that doesn't count.

Culture Club counts though. Shocked I was dark, it was young. Something like that.

Okay, okay.  Boston is one of my favorite bands, and how could a prog-lover at least not enjoy them?  Those Hammond B-3 solos?  Excellently crafted guitar parts?  Brad Delp (RIP)?

I mean embarrassing to the nth degree.  Want my secrets?  Here you go, with all the shame that goes with it!

Ace of Base.  Yeah, that Swedish dance group that sang, "I saw the sign, and it opened up my mind, I saw the sign."  I started listening to them in the 6th grade based on a recommendation from friend  (I no longer know that friend, but damn him, his legacy of catchy pop remains).

The first CD I ever bought was The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: Greatest Hits.  To me now, they are to county what progressive rock is to rock (if you listen to a generous portion of their discography).  But hell, give me their rendition of "Mr. Bojangles" any day over "Roundabout."  Shocked

I also enjoy Amy Winehouse.  Yeah, they tried to make me go to rehab too.  I said no, no, no.

I'm going to get back to you later.  There's heaps of embarassing stuff I listen to.  I will probably be banned before I can disclose it all.

I really like that song "two Princes" by The Spin Doctors.  To be honest, I think that might be the most embarrassing to be mentioned in this thread so far.  I also really like that John Fogerty song about baseball and get really happy when it comes on the radio at work.

As for myself, I don't think there is anything to be ashamed of in our musical tastes (or any other tastes for that matter). Anyway, if I had to choose, I'd mention that in the Eighties I used to dig some songs by bands that no progger would consider respectableWink. A particular favourite of mine was "Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat (a very poignant song, with an equally poignant video), as well as stuff by Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet.

I don't really have anything in my collection that I'm truly embarrassed by. Depending on the situation there are always things I wouldn't mention (sometimes it's prog, sometimes it's Swedish indiepop from the 90s), but if there was something I kind of liked but felt "eerrm...Embarrassed" about I wouldn't have kept it in my collection.

I love quality Pop, so... (as posted in pervious guilty pleasures threads):

Anglezoom - electro-goth from ex-X-Perience europop/disco diva
Buck's Fizz - EuroVision winners (that makes them automatically cheesy) but great songs, superb production and Cheryl Baker.
MCR - The Black Parade - the psuedo-Emo's go psuedo-Prog - the live version (The Black Parade Is Dead!) is brilliant.

and my latest confession:

Siobhan Donaghy - Ghosts - ex-Sugar Babe attempts at left-filed indie and misses by a country mile, but the tilte-track (Ghosts) is great: http://www.myspace.com/siobhandonaghyparlophone - http://www.myspace.com/siobhandonaghyparlophone

Oh yeah, George Michael. Even at his worst (yes, I'm talking about "Last Christmas" LOL) he is miles ahead of the vast majority of today's mainstream pop. At his best he is plain awesome.

Other 'gulity' pleasures? Hmm, Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite. Not sure how guilty that is though, I think it's a really good song!

Ah, here's one - Shaggy's immortal Mr Boombastic!

And Ms Minogue's latest (I guess) "How does it feel in my arms" - hampered by the lame chorus, the rest of the song just feels very good!

Haven't listened to any Spock's Beard for quite a while now, so I'm not sure how they'd hold up, but I used to love them Tongue

I get that, but I once searched for "Geddy Lee" just as an experiment and did not get a topic that was about Geddy Lee (and included his name).  Perhaps it was a bug, I don't know.  Anyway, I think I do a fairly decent job of coming up with original ideas for topics and polls.  I hope a "rerun" from time to time is looked over- besides, I haven't created a "Yes vs. Genesis" poll, now have I?  Smile

There's more from me (and more will keep coming, no doubt)...

I like Wyclef Jean.  The Carnival is one of the best rap albums I've ever heard (and that's out of about five).

No one is critisising this thread - I actually enjoy these Guilty Pleasure / Confessional threads.

But now you've confused me - searching Geddy Lee finds several threads with his name in the thread title, but I don't know what you mean by "about" - just having Mr Lee in the title is no guarantee that the thread will be about him and I don't think any search engine can determine that.

There are three distictly different Search methods on the forum,

first is main forum Forum Search  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/search_form.asp - Search , which is restricted to searching for words in thread Titles; Entering "Geddy Lee" in there will result in several pages where Geddy's name is used in the Title of a thread

the second is the   Topic Search  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/search_form.asp?TID=52685 - Topic Search  which searches the Posts in the selected Thread ; For example putting Geddy Lee into that search field will show your previous post, and this one in this thread

and finally there is the Google search on the main PA section (eg: grey box on the PA front page) which will search the whole site (including the forum)...

If you wish to search the Forum using Google then try "site:www.progarchives.com/forum" in the google search field along with the subject you are looking for, for example: like > http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=geddy+lee&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=10&lr=&as_filetype=&ft=i&as_sitesearch=www.progarchives.com%2Fforum&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=off - this <

I think this may help.  Thank you.  All I meant about the Geddy Lee thing was that fairly recently, I searched for a topic I knew already existed.  Knowing the name of it (and that this name was a part of the title), I searched, and got no results.  It may have been a technical issue.  Thanks for the information, though.

Not so sure I should be ashamed, but I have an anomaly in my tastes.

I despise the radio, not just the recycled uninteresting music that comes out, but the commercials and the personalities.  I have never really liked, even amongst prog bands, a bands radio hits and especially radio edits.  That being said, I really like Soundgarden's radio songs.  My favorite is Rusty Cage,  but I also really like Black Hole Sun, Burden in My Hand, Outshined, and Blow Up the Outside World.  Some of there stuff has prog elements, especially Black Hole Sun and Burden in My Hand.  But all of the rest of the albums just sounds like filler to me.  So Soundgarden has one of the only 3 out over 700 albums that is a "Greatest Hits" (Yesterdays and Argent Anthology are the others).

I suppose the one that should give me the greatest shame is my enjoyment of Cypress Hill's Spanish language album.

Scorpions' big hit songs - yeah, yeah, Hurricane and Wind of Change and all that - are the closest to what this thread is about for me.  And with my obsession with their 70s prowess showing no signs of waning, I like the aforementioned hits less and less anyway.  For whatever reason, I never listened to much pop in a big way at any time. The only modern pop artist I dug into recently is Tori Amos, maybe I should feel guilty about that, don't know.  And yeah, I still like Santana's Supernatural album - I first listened to it nearly 10 years back - , again I love the guitarwork on the album, so it's not much of a guilty pleasure for me.

You're pretty normal. Tori Amos is a fine musician, and of course people here love Santana and his cruddy albums. And Scorpions are one of Opeth's main inspirations.

Scorpions for prog related?LOL

Not really ashamed, but well here it goes: Simply Red, INXS, Audioslave, Pearl Jam, Blind Melon, The Corrs, Daft Punk, XYZ, Sumo, Stevie Wonder, and some others... The ones that I pick up with more frequency than others, it's Pearl Jam and Audioslave.

Scorpions for prog related?LOL

You think the thought didn't enter my mind? Tongue  I am sure proggers will enjoy the first two Scorpions albums and then they were an influence on European power metal and in turn on the symphonic power-prog wave from the mid-90s onwards.  Maybe some other time. LOL

Well, I think we have to draw the line somewhere, and although I'm sure the Scorpions have plenty of material that proggers would adore, that's taking things a bit too far. I seriously think that tons of turmoil would pop up if there was an actual suggestion like that. I mean, with all these old farts riled up about Metallica being on a prog site...

Their loss. Tongue

Lol, my suggestion was purely in jest anyway Tongue.  My own view is that it is more important to add obscure bands to the website that are clearly prog than to add famous bands that have some relation to prog, who hasn't heard of Scorpions anyway. Wink  I write reviews for metal-archives.com and we don't practise anything like metal-related there Wink so no King Crimson, no Blue Oyster Cult, no Uriah Heep. This by no means puts an end to debate because way too many metalheads are not interested in its development through the 70s and don't consider even Black Sabbath's 70s material as metal, least of all Scorpions and Rainbow (who are on the metal-archives).  But at least then the line is drawn at the core of the genre, related becomes a broad concept. Ok ok this is well outside the topic, so I stop. LOL

Go listen to Meddle three times and then say "I get up, I get down" twenty times, and your soul will be cleansed.  Wink
