| Michael is the inventor of the digital sequencing keyboard that permeated the Kosmiche scene in germany. He he introduced it first to Klaus Schulze then it spread to others. I used to know the history and evolution but thats been 25 years ago. Cant remember the whole story now. I would say his work on Departures is closer to Moondawn or Stratosfear which are more melodic and sequenced as I remember. |

He was actually a member of Tangerine Dream at one point - he filled in for Peter Baumann on one of their tours. As DB points out, he was a contemporary of T Dream/K Schulze/Ashra and the other kosmiche artists, and had a big influence without releasing much in his own right. I would say that several albums are similar coming out of the maturing German Kosmiche scene from 1975 to 1977. Micheal's Departures, Ashra New Age of Earth, TD's Ricochet and Schulze Moondawn all have similarities to one another. The sequencer was being born and these guys were working together, developing the sound and borrowing from one another. Kinda like all the bands associated with the Canterbury scene, many had similar things going on and sound the same often to my ear. I agree musically with you on Triumvirat being similar to ELP, my only problem with Triumvirat is the hokie lyrics IMO. I thought Lake was preaching a philosophy to speak, T-rat seems to be writing a few words to sing in the song, the same problem I have with Rush's fairy tales. Instrumental I like them but Geddy has to open his mouth and its goofy sci-fi stuff to me, his vocal range and everything this side of the sun lyrics just make it too tedious.  He was musical director, co-composer and co–scriptwriter on the acclaimed film Koyaanisgatsi—the sound track featuring his collaborations with composer Phillip Glass. He also worked with Jack Nitsche scoring several projects including the controversial 9 1/2 Weeks. Hoenig also composed music for the television show Max Headroom. |
