COLLABORATORS TOP PROG-ROCK ALBUMS 2008

Hello everyone. I'm honored to announce the results of the Collaborator's Top 2008. 72 PA Collaborators have voted (VIP Members, Prog Reviewers, Collaborators, Special Collaborators and Admins), a total of 145 albums having been nominated.

The albums awarded first and second place won by a considerable distance, meanwhile the battle for third place was a nailbitter (I can tell you that from experience, having counted the results in real time); then onward, things were more tied.

1. Opeth - Watershed
A popular, even if not fully aclaimed new Opeth release, Watershed ends up as 2008's Top Collaborator pick. Prog Reviewer Nightfly was one of the members who praised Watershed, so here's a quote from his review: "[...]although Opeth have released a number of excellent albums in the past, with Watershed they have hit a new peak with an album combining all their past elements and produced their most diverse release to date."

2. Il Bacio della Medusa - Discesa agl'inferi d'un giovane amante
It should be mentioned that, unlike Opeth, Il Bacio di Medusa's second album was nominated the best album by our Collaborators more than any other album (but lost at points). Surprising, impressive work, but let's give the mike to Honorary Collaborator and Italian Prog Specialist Finnforest on this one: "You really get the whole package here: amazing composition, passionate performance, great melody, and tons of enthusiasm and spark. This is a band that pays homage to the greatest ‘70s Italian bands, English bands like Purple and Tull, and even flash the bluesy burn of Wicked Minds or Jack White."

3. The Tangent - Not As Good As The Book

No doubt, The Tangent treated their fans remarkably this year, with a release full of easter eggs besides the music, Not As Good As The Book ending up debated whether or not it's the band's best, and whether or not Tillison and his fellow musicians have outdone themselves this time. The following excerpt is from a review written by Special Collaborator King By-Tor: "[...]a must have album. It takes a bit for this album to grow on you, but after three or four spaced out listens you might find yourself coming back to it every single day needing more. 5 Soho Jazz clubs out of 5!"

4. Pendragon - Pure

Pure is definitely one of the albums that received overwhelming marks from its fans and other listeners, but more importantly, the word "change" was on many people's lips. Symphonic & Neo Prog Specialist Iván Melgar Morey explains: "[...]they have not left behind their natural sound, they have sharpened it and mixed [...] a new and unexpected sound in the border that divides Neo, Symphonic and Heavy Prog."

5. Beardfish - Sleeping In Traffic: Part Two

Swedish in-form and in-vogue band Beardfish completed their two-part concept album "Sleeping in Traffic" in two consecutive years. Succesful in almost every way. If last year "Part One" earned a rather low spot (place 87!), this time "Part Two" received more than enough mentions from Collaborators, ending in the top 5 accordingly. Prog Reviewer Liquid Eternity describes it as "[...]the stronger, more creative, more unique album. The whole album is very strong and very individual. [...] For a young and not well-known band, this is a tremendous release and one that needs much more attention. Fans of just about any style of melodic music will find something to appreciate here."

6. Steven Wilson - Insurgentes

"Overall an enjoyable, solid effort from STEVEN WILSON, which will keep legions of fans happy until the release of the next PORCUPINE TREE/STEVEN WILSON album." (valravennz, PA VIP member)

7. Kayo Dot - Blue Lambency Downward

"This is most emphatically not easy music to just dive into unless Avant Garde tends to be your bread and butter of music listening, but with time and patience you will find many strong melodies and quirks that create a memorable experience, and this is the hallmark of any truly great album..." (sleeper, Prog Metal Specialist)

8. The Mars Volta - The Bedlam In Goliath

"With The Bedlam in Goliath, The Mars Volta have created a very fast-paced, aggressive yet both funky, melodic/memorable and powerful record..." (Moatilliatta, Prog Reviewer)

9. Cynic - Traced In Air

"This album tells a story, the music intertwines and connects after a few listens. There is really no way for me to put this album down in any way. A perfect score is well deserved here." (ProgBagel, Prog Reviewer)

10. Meshuggah - obZen

"...in the threshold of another brutal experience but with some changes." (The T, Prog Metal Specialist) "Back to the good old days, a return to the Chaos." (OpethGuitarist, Prog Reviewer) "Meshuggah at it´s best!" (el böthy, Prog Reviewer)

Interesting results!

You accidentally made a typo with Beardfish, by the way, mislabeling it Pendragon.

The thought of Opeth fanboys breeding is almost as scary as the sound of Akerfeldt's growls.

Great job, and I regret that I had not heard enough albums to feel comfortable voting.  Not my favourite Guapo album, but I had thought that Guapo's might make the top ten.  Dark Shot and Birds and Buildings are very good.  My favourite I've heard based on samples alone would be this:

Have you heard it?

Can't say I disagree, since it was my nº1 choice as well, but I did heard very few albums from this year and, for the sake of prog, I do hope there is better out there. I'm by no means an Opeth fan - I only heard Damnation and Blackwater Park before Watershed, both of which I though were rather average. But this latest album really clicked, reminding me more of other Swedish staples of modern prog (Anglagard and Anekdoten, especially) and some other prog greats (Gentle Giant, Gryphon, Uriah Heep) than of other metal groups out there. Not a masterpiece at all, but featuring some of the most beautiful music I'd heard in ages and occasional glimpses of prog brilliance.

I didn't add Il Bacio di Medusa's album to my list, as I've only recently came across it. I found it a bit hit-and-miss (a lot like Beardish, my greatest disapointment after all the positive reviews), but it's still growing on me - even though I don't think it will ever top Watershed on my list.

Overall I'm surprised but not surprised.

All of the top 5 seem like some of the most popular releases this year (barring perhaps Il Bacio...), BUT I saw quite some negative "press" towards Watershed so I am surprised that it made #1, and by a far margin. Perhaps I should have voted for Il Bacio afterall Tongue

As I said in the voting thread, 2008 was a bit of a disappointment overall. Nothing really struck me as over-the-top fantastic, and even my top one (which might be somewhat easy to spot in that list) would only recieve 4 stars from me here (maybe 4.5, but rounded down to be certain). The 09 thread looks interesting so heres hoping for tougher decisions in 09! Big smile

I'm curious as to how many albums the collaborators on average have listened to? I try to refrain from making "x of the year" lists as the year ends because there are so many things I missed out on in that year and some things don't really seem to surface until a little later anyway. *shrug*

Rico, is that the whole list?

Where's The Wrong Object - Stories from the Shed?  I voted for that in my top 5 and don't see it.

Oh wait, it's top 100.  No worries.

A very surprising result... none of the albums I voted for were in the top 10.  I did have Watershed in my top 5 but moved it to number 6 (so out of the votes).

4 bands out of my Top-5 made it into the top 100, I wonder where the last one (Sonar) ended up. Chances are I'm the only PA member who owns that album, though....

1. La Primavera dei Sordi - Pennelli di Vermeer (47)
2. The Fruit Fallen - Edensong  (54)
3. Abbandono Del Tempo E Delle Forme - J'Accuse (31)
4. Celluloid - Sonar (??)
5. TriSector - Van Der Graaf Generator (13)

As promotor of new and unsigned I'm happy to start over in 2009. After all, #1-#4 in my list were all debut albums, and they seem to have caught on here. ClapClap

Yes, and that is the problem with these sorts of lists. Unless everyone listens to all albums (or most) then the list is not really to be taken too seriously or to be treated with high reliance. More like a guildeline for the albums that made "noise" this year.

My personal 5 would be
Cast - Originalis
Rational Diet - At Work
Birds & Buildings - Bantham To Behemoth
Cargo Cult Revival - Snakecharmer
Fromuz - Ovrelook

The rest of the list (which included at first 75 albums) now is made up of over 100 and it still growing (not all of them on PA, but most are progressive in nature).

The top was from the start based on every person's "preferences" - i.e. favorites. Perhaps we could emphasize more the "valorous" perspective - lowering that way half of the so-called "popular" names and works - that way a Collaborator being able to make the difference between, hypothetically speaking, having liked Opeth very much, but highlighting a rich progressive album by someone else.

Otherwise though, if it's about listening to many albums and then making a choice worth being called "valid", we could only gather few Collaborators who do in fact listen to a lot of new albums during one year (let's say you, Olav, Uwe, Erik N., Angelo, me, Igor and others) and do our own "critical top of the year".

Yes, unfortunately. But i am  definitely looking forward to hear both albums that Phideaux is going to release in '09. if any of those is as good or even better than Doomsday Afternoon, it will be tough not to win the 1st place, even with PT. . .

There is, however, the Steven Wilson solo album. Maybe he put way too good work there to make another "oh so great" PT album, but all we can do is wait.

And i am kind of disappointed that Ayreon's release got so low. . . CryShockedCryCry

Interesting list. I'm a Watershed fanboy, and though I agree, I'm surprised. Even among metal albums I expected Cynic to rate higher. Didn't see Dark Suns even in the top 100.

I'm actually hopeful for 2009. Devin Townsend - Ki is my most anticipated.

I'm glad to see three of my choices are in the top fifteen.

I knew of course that ''Black Widow'' had no chance but at least it got a mention. I hope that '09 will sound better than '08 which was not the greatest musical year of all to be honest.

Take care my prog friends.

As if the same weren't true for Opeth in 2008.  it was decided the day the release was announced, truly sad.

#1 & 6-10 are unlistenable.  Dead
#2 I haven't heard but am curious about.  Smile

Wouldn't know about that. I was personally surprised to see different Collaborators, with different tastes, acknowledging Opeth. Cynic & Meshuggah, on the other hand, were mostly chosen by Metal fans & team members.

About my remark, don't forget that I added an emoticon at the end of the phrase. Sure, it will surely happen the way I predicted it, but I still said it out of humor. LOL

Edit: and what's wrong with Prog Metal albums?

I believe it was The T who really didn't want to see Opeth at the top.

Who cares if metal is at the top, it's where prog is these days.

Nah, prog is a smorgasbord of many genres, not just metal.

In my mind, prog is more about the avant side of things, rather than Metal.  However because of the nature of the avant-prog scene and the fact many people think it's something it's not, then the more popular prog-metal albums will get the votes.

I was surprised Opeth won though.

If Opeth were as foregone as Porcupine Tree, then why has everyone else been surprised? It got trashed by Certified, T, and p0mt3, and most of the other collabs who reviewed it gave it mediocre reviews.

Opeth is my favorite band and Watershed is really fantastic but I don't think it was my favorite album this year. Still congrats to them! I really, really loved the album when it first came out but it doesn't have much play back value TBH. Also I think it's pretty disjointed and doesn't  flow well as an album. I'll find myself only listening to Burden, or only listening to The Lotus Eater, etc. There are some great songs but when you put them together it doesn't really work.

Couldn't agree more, specially regarding that first sentence. In fact i am very surprised with the fact that TMV latest album have so many negative reviews, but again proggers are a strange kind: they like the edgy 70's sound, but whine when a band brings new things to the table because they "don't want so strange things" (and yet they listen to progressive rock) and they whine when a band emulate the 70's because they are not bringing anything new to the table.

The fan itself don't like progressive rock nor progressive music, he only likes Yes or Genesis and God knows what will happen if he likes both. The fan likes the senseless noises that are Henry Cow's, Magma's and Zappa's music, but can't listen to five seconds of The Mars Volta because there is "too much noise". The fan likes the heavy distorted guitars and bass that King Crimson uses in Red but hates anything labeled "progressive metal" as if Pain of Salvation, Atheist and Kayo Dot were the same thing. The fan likes the endless repetition of the same thing overandoverandoveroverandoverandover that is Krautrock or electronic prog, but they think a new band is not being original if they play the song there more than 3 times in a 40 minute song. The fan hates growling vocals, but thinks that every male/female vocalist with a clean vocal from any new band sound exactly like X 70's vocalist and, therefore, the new band is an useless piece of garbage.

No surprise the prog rock scene is always in the brink of disappearing and the prog bands are searching for the metal, indie, pop-rock, new age, etc audience instead of the prog rock audience: the prog rock fan suck big floppy donkey d**ks because they don't want anything sounding new or old, they just want to listen the same old songs over and over again and that's it.

IMO, people should stop listening to the bands and start listening to prog rock and then maybe "new" prog genres, like the 20-year-old progressive metal or the 15-year-old post-rock, and stop thrashing then, maybe the bands from those genres could be more interested in the prog-rock fan than in the metal or indie fan.

People need to remember that different is not the same as worse.

True. Its not possible to think of Blue Lambency... as unlistenable metal. Not if you're heard it (which I doubt Trademark has).

...But this yearlist should be made in some other way than collecting a few top five lists from the collabs that remembers to send their list in time. A mediocre release like Watershed only wins because its the most well known. Even Opeth fans wouldn't rate it among their five best. Does anybody actually think 2008's number one is even close to deserve it?

It's probably safe to say that the only thing keeping BDM out of the #1 slot was the fact that Opeth is a "standard" so they made it onto many lists...whereas BDM didn't show up as much but they were high on anyone's who heard it.  Watershed is a great record, but I don't think it comes close to "Discesa..."

I  do. I really liked Watershed and, though it was not my choice as the best album of '08, i think the album is a worthy number 1. From all the albums that made it to the top 10, i think the only ones that could be the 1st, IMO, were Watershed and Not as God as in the Book and those were, respectively, my 3rd and 4th choices, but i didn't listened Pendragon's Pure, though i'm looking forward to check it now (i only like 1 Neo band, that being Marillion and only during the Fish years, but why not? I may found another neo band i like).

Although I didn't vote because I feel that I have not heard enough 2008 albums to make reasonably informed choices, and know that the results of such "contests" don't reflect my tastes well, I am rather disappointed that chamber rock didn't fare better this year since there were quite a few great chamber releases.

Great work Rico!Clap

I at least absolutely disagree with the top album of the year... The worst Opeth release since... well.. since I've been hearing them (I haven't heard their first three albums, I have all the rest starting with Still Life.)  As much of a prog-metal fan as i am I can't help but feel like our genre has won due to popularity... The same as PT last year.... As much as I HATE Kayo Dot's "Dowsing Anemone", I have to give it to that album: it achieved quite a feat of winning the Top 2006, the band being 1% as popular as PT or Opeth.... (and that year Opeth HAD a real album of the year contender)...

My choice was a symphnic rock one (listed here as eclectic actually)... THE TANGENT's... I even included KAyo Dot's in my list... Actually, for PROG-METAL it was quite a weak year in the "famous" stuff... The real good stuff was the not-so-famous ones (Enslaved for example...) I haven't heard CYNIC yet (it's waiting in my "to-listen" shelf).

Well, next year PT, then next year Opeth again.... then it's PT again... And people still think DT is the real "popular boy" here in PA... LOL
