Has anyone discussed this group here yet? I'm listening to their first album right now for the sixth or so time and the more I hear it the more I think they might be appropriate for inclusion in Prog-Folk. They're not an easy band to pigeon-hole. The overriding sound might be what some refer to as "classical" (though orchestral would be a better term) but their use of complex arrangements, electric organ and suchlike gives them more than a whiff of progginess, to my ears at least. They've got a myspace, but it doesn't include my favourite track from the first album (I really must get their new one soon to see how their sound's developed) which is the glorious "Chimes". I'd urge people to try listening to that song first as I think it best encompasses everything the band is capable of - unusual chord progressions, slowly twisting arrangements, alienating dissonance that seeps into pure folk-tinged beauty... It's good stuff! |

| Ah yes... that's a lovely video (directed by Tim Smith from Cardiacs, fact fans!) of the concluding "song" part of the track I mentioned above. On the album there's a good seven minutes of instrumental meandering that precedes it. It's nice on its own too, mind, and the video's wonderful. The shy little smiles at the end are so endearing! |

Very refreshing viewing, thanks for highlighting them. I need to listen to them a lot more but as you say extremely hard to pigeon -hole. Yeah, there's definitely touches of avant there but they'd be an uncomfortable fit in that category, IMO. I honestly think prog folk would suit them best were they to be included in the archives. |

It has some Nu-Folk connection and Nu-Folk is experimental and has "classical" elements. From what I heard I was doubtful about it for a Prog category (Prog Folk or otherwise), but would really need to take the time to listen to more. I certainly do like the music very much.

What a horrible phrase!  I'm not certain about including them myself. I simply wanted to get a discussion going, really. I'd suggest seeking out their first album (or perhaps their second but, as I say, I've not heard that one yet) and giving it a thorough listen before making any decisions. I've heard it several times now and some tracks strike me as being highly progressive (in every sense) whilst others owe more to straight-up folk and even pop. They're a REALLY tricky one! |

Haha. I guess while you were gone you might've missed the NuJazz and NuProg discussions. I've considered going on a nuCrusade for a NuFolk category after discussion about a NuFolk band called http://www.myspace.com/gaebolg - Gae Bolg which I'd suggested for inclusion. NSRO had a track released on a NuFolk compilation.
