Hi. Ealier this year I brought the swedish band "Witchcraft" to some of your attention. Unfortunately I don't really know many bands today that plays that kind of music. There's of course the australian band Wolfmother, but they are not really satisfying me enough. I like their music. But I'd like to get to know some more heavy prog bands that are around today. Of course I know a lot of the old ones like Uriah Heep, Rush, Captain Beyond etc... But could any of you recommend bands that plays such music this day?. I'm also interrested in getting to know more bands like the swedish pysch/prog band Dungen. Do any of you, have any suggestions to me? that can satisfy my retro rock filled mind?. På forhånd tak (I don't know how to translate those words...)  ------------- Help me in my search for knowledge, I must learn the Secret Art. Danava:go ahead for self titled first it's heavy psych/space rock,vintage sounding,reminding me of Hawkwind,Tangerine Dream,Black Sabbath and Maiden.Second one titled Unonou is great too White Hills:Heads of fire,heavy psych/krautrock Serpentina Satelite:Nothing to say,heavy psych/krautrock from Peru Electric Swan(hard rock) Wicked Minds(heavy prog for Hammond freaks!) You need yourself some Nebula. They play a style that's very similar to early Captain Beyond but not as overtly progressive.

If you want modern heavy-prog with a retro feel, you cant miss BLACK BONZO, IL BACIO DELLA MEDUSA and BEARDFISH. ------------- Bigger on the inside. |

I'd like to mention a band I added last year, Cosmic Nomads from Australia. They have a classic, heavy prog sound, with plenty of Hammond organ, which I'm sure you'll enjoy. Being Italian, I also second the Bacio della Medusa recommendation - their album Discesa agli inferi di un giovane amante was definitely among the very best releases of 2008. BTW, the translation is 'thanks in advance'  ... |

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, so listen to some samples first, but when I saw the title Heavy Prog/Retro Rock I immediately thought of Rick Wakeman -- Out There. -------------

Not around today, but a very heavy prog band from the beginning: High Tide. Since
you did not mention them you might not know them. They never
made it big, although they would have deserved it. "Sea Shanties" and
the second self-titled album are as heavy as heavy can get, with only
very few quiet moments, and the constant dueling between electric
guitar and electric violin is highly enjoyable and quite unique. As to heavy bands of today: The Acid Mothers Guru Guru (a fusion of forces of Acid Mothers Temple and Guru Guru) can be pretty heavy, but they are also very psyched out; check out these video clips of them: http://tinyurl.com/cavknc - http://tinyurl.com/cavknc http://tinyurl.com/azwktv - http://tinyurl.com/azwktv The great Mani Neumeier on drums holds it all together and propels it forward. If you like Hawkwind you'll probably like the Pink Fairies and Man.
Okay, they're hardly modern, but what the...
I'd recommend:
Never Never Land, What a Bunch of Sweeties & Kings of Oblivion (Fairies) and Be Good to Yourself at Least Once a Day and Back into the Future (Man). If you like Baldfriede's Youtube clips, I'd recommend the Fairies' Finland Freakout (very similar in style/structure) and Guru Guru's Dance of the Flames and PSY.
Pendragon's Pure is one heck of a good heavy prog album too (released last year).

Totally agree with this statement. Also, I don't think I've seen the words "Atomic Rooster" yet. Heavy lil' art funk band that spun out of Crazy Arthur Brown and spun into ELP. And, finally: uh, dude, the Maiden...? Unlike the other bands I listed, THEY'RE still around today. Edit: crap though, the only modern band I can think of is a Norwegian metal band called Burning Saviours, but they kinda broke up last year. ------------- "There seem to be quite a large percentage of young American boys out there tonight. Since the Rooster's been mentioned, happy to recommend Death Walks Behind You and In the Hearing Of.
If you like them, check out s/t's Hard Stuff and Bullitt (if you can find them - wish I still had them)
