I've been looking through the 2009 albums here on PA and there's not a lot that has cought my attention, with Wobbler's Afterglow Pain of Salvation's Ending Themes DVD (which I now have) the only real exceptions and. We are now half way through March and I cant help but wander when the good stuff gets here, buy this time last year we already had The Mars Volta, Dark Suns, The Tangent and probably several others that I cant quite remember.
I know there's a lot of quality to come but does anyone else feel that its been a slow start to the year?

Well, things might be slow now but they won't stay that way. Four Devin Townsend albums, a Dream Theater one, a Porcupine Tree one (I heard perhaps a double album at that), a Pain of Salvation one, and a bunch more I can't be bothered to think of at the moment... Plus, you've forgotten the 2009 release that's easily taken the lead slot already, the Umphrey's McGee album Mantis.

I'm quite satisfied with the releases so far - except for the usual difficulties in acquiring some of the albums. But if they don't want me to listen to their music ... so be it!

I think 2008 had a slower start and a very impetuous finish.
2009 started well - and with many things to virtually choose from.

I really want to give Barbares a listen, but I haven't been able to yet. Also, I count Insurgentes as 2008, despite the goofy general release.

I reckon you would like the Forgotten Suns, Daedalus and Hourglass albums at the very least!

I'll second that one (Mantis). My only 2009 so far and if doesn't prove to be the best new thing I've heard, 2009 will shape up to be a very good year.

wont be a weak year for prog, besides we have wilson's 'insurgentes' right?

Might be a slow start for prog, but for music in general I'd say no way:
Animal Collective
Andrew Bird
Cursive
Bell Orchestre
If These Trees Could Talk
And a couple of so-so's:
Irepress
Trail of Dead
Next Week:
Mono
Mastodon
The Decemberists

Also, Merriweather Post Pavillion and Insurgentes are indeed excellent. Last year was a bit of a letdown for music overall, especially when compared to the stellar '07.

You think '09 started slow? I already have some albums that were released this year, though i didn't checked em all.
I am really anxious about Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Between the Buried and Me and both Phideaux albums. I just hope Phideaux have this time a fair fight, because he sure should have won back in 07, but 99.999999999% of everyone in this site knows Steven Wilson & friends and who the hell is Phideaux anyway, right?

^ Ha! I was also unaware of a new Bell Orchestre. Thanks for the heads up Mr. Prog Freak.
As for the topic question, to be honest I'm usually unaware of most new releases until Nov/Dec when I'm scrambling to listen to as many as possible before the collab vote. Obvious expections are for big bands that many a people here talk about, or personal favorites.
Oh sure, it puts me on a new page where the "^" doesn't work...

I agree! I think Trail Of Dead just put out the best album they've made since Source Tags and Codes.
Does anyone know if they've been considered for addition to ProgArchives?
They are known for having a "prog-ish" sound.
They might fit into Prog Related or Crossover Prog.

Oh, it's so much more than druggy guitar noodling: beautiful orchestrations, excellent songwriting, some great scorching solos (there is one by Johnny Marr sounding a lot like Fripp), very tasteful use of electronics and a simply overwhelming feel of "mellow majesty" throughout. Yeah, there does seem to be a bit of a slower start to the Progressive music genre.
In my opinion, they are either taking their time to put out a better quality, or maybe it is a bit less prominent than last year.
I dont know, I have not put much thought in it so i cannot say.

I'm damn excited about this year though.
If 2009 ended right now, I'd be able to pick a comfortable top 5 for the year. (I think anyway ) As opposed to last year, where I could barely get a top 5 after the whole year.

Mastodon's Crack the Skye is already in the running for album of the year for me. Of course, there are many new albums coming out this year. At one point there will be so much new music I won't know what to do with myself. I'm psyched for these: BTBAM, Riverside, Porcupine Tree, Phideaux, Dream Theater and The Mars Volta.
Dream Theater looks very promising with only 6 songs on the whole record. I don't know though, theres potential for them to lay another collective turd like Systematic Chaos.
Between the Buried and Me. I have 10000% confidence they are gonna top Colors. These guys have been getting better with each release and there's nothing that can stop them. I'm very excited.
Riverside. I'm not too sure about these guys. I saw some studio footage of them recording and it sounded pretty heavy. I think these guys are going to surprise a few.
The Mars Volta! These guys made an "acoustic" album, so this should be a treat. I just hope they come to their senses and get a more structured drummer, this new guy needs to calm the hell down.
Porcupine Tree. I haven't heard much from these guys, other than they're making a 35 minute song. Anything with Gavin Harrison is bound to be extravagant. I'm pretty excited.
Looks like a good year!

In fact, I didn't heard anything from 09' yet. From 2008 it was new Porcupine Tree, Beardfish, Moon Safari (oh), few others, but not from this year.
Can you guys recommend me something ?
Is this normal, to wait till some time will pass and after it I'll try something new, but not until few months pass me by (while listening older ones) ?

Rumors of a new Tull album? Awesome new Decemberists album? Something I read about Porcupine Tree up there? I don't think 2009's so bad.

I agree with you Mike. I know they made it available for "The best of" for 2008 here at ProgArchives, but it should count for 2009 as well.

Riverside is working on the new album - "Anno Domini High Definition". The band has already begun recording, this time in http://www.studio-x.pl/ - Studio X in Olsztyn. We keep you up-to-date with the process of creation on a special "record" website - http://www.annodominihighdefinition.com/ - www.annodominihighdefinition.com .

Mariusz Duda: "We
have gone from Warsaw, we have changed the studio and the producer. We
care deeply about creating a coherent record and that is why most
probably there are only going to be 5 songs on it. The material will be
energetic, multifarious, and - I hope so - very good for live
performances. It will be a story about liquid modernity, life in
a constant hurry, stress and anxiety about the future. A picture of our
times in 1920 x 1080 definition." The expected release date is June 2009. More details soon...

Oh, and yeah, the new Mastodon.
Are you into post metal at all? If so, Wavering Radiant from Isis would float your boat.

I remember halfway through last year we had like five or six albums in the top slots. It just takes time for the reviews to come in over 25, I guess, or at least for the not so big name prog bands.

Why wait until an album has 25 reviews? Sounds a little bit steep to me.

I've heard "work in progress" versions of 3 of the songs from the upcoming album. All 3 are very good, but one, Stronger Than Friction, is absolutely out of this world. Methinks this could be another great album. Fingers crossed.

Who's playing keyboards now for IQ? I need to dust off Tales From The Lush Attic, The Wake, Ever and Living Proof. I listened to the hell out of those years ago.

Hi,
I sometimes think that our issue is that we keep expecting the same stuff from the same bands that we already know ... and as such we are kinda disappointed that we have not heard anything yet ... there is a lot of music out there ... in these times go check out ... 10 russian bands ... or 10 swedish bands ... and any board or blog out there will tell you 10 band names to check on ...
... if any of us are so inclined ...

^I certainly dont, but so far very fey of the albums released in 09 have caught my attention, which is why I started this thread. As I've already noted, though, its beggining to change and I think we're in for a very strong year musically.

The year got off to a slow start for me also. The only 5 star release so far in my eyes has been Gojira's The Way of All Flesh.
But hopefully this will change in a months time, with two of my favorite bands releasing new albums in May.
First of all there's Isis, with "Wavering Radiant", a release which I
am sure many people here are already aware of and anticipating with as
much eagerness as I am.
Secondly, Australian band Karnivool are releasing their Sophomore album to follow up their 2005 debut Themata. Judging from the songs they have plays live so far, this will be a
highly progressive album, and one which will definitely warrant their
inclusion in these archives.

Other new releases I'm looking forward to that I forgot to mention are from Tesseract, Anathema and Katatonia, although none of these are technically confirmed yet.
