This may already be known, and I just missed it, but it seems the top 20s on the genre pages do not match the top albums list when sorted by genre.
For instance, on the http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=6 - top 20 in prog folk , the #20 album is Jethro Tull's Benefit, while on the http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?ssubgenres=6&salbumtypes=1&syears=&scountries=&sminratings=25&sminavgratings=3.5&smaxresults=100&x=70&y=5 - larger list , the #20 spot is occupied by Cei Ce Ne-Au Dat Nume by Phoenix.
Is there a reason for this discrepancy, or is it a bug? ../artist.asp?id=1586 -

^ the larger list has more options, for example minimum number of ratings ... I guess those parameters are different for the top 20 lists.

Yes, there is a reason - the genre page does not set a minimum number of ratings when compiling the chart, the larger list excludes all albums with less than 25 ratings.

After I posted, I started playing with those parameters, but still couldn't figure out how to get the big chart to match the top 20. Thanks for the info gents.

I took off the filter in the big chart, and the charts are closer to matching, but still do not.
Not trying to be a pest, just reporting.

Let me add some info and so we can understand and maybe improve things...
Mr. ProgFreak and Dean were right with the number of ratings, in the sub-genre page the minimum is dynamically set using the average number of ratings of studio album of that sub-genre , in comparaison to the TOP PROG ALBUM tool wich is set manually.
Also, in the sub-genre pages, the position in the TOP 20 is calculated using the same algorithm but comparing and weighting the album avg rating to only the studio album of that sub-genre, in comparaison of the TOP PROG ALBUM tool wich is comparing them all-together.
What do you think ?
Does it explain well ?
Please share

It's just a way to a make more people happy about seeing a favourite band on a top 20 list

It's just that if I see a list of the top 20, but then I want to find out which album is #21, I can't find that out because there are two different criteria used to produce those two lists.
Or am I being obtuse? Is there way to set the filters such that it matches the top 20 on the genre page, or no because the big list uses ratings from all genres (even when a genre filter is added)?

TOP 100 , done !
you can now select to view the genre TOP 100 in the sub-genre page.
For now there is still a difference between the GENRE RESUTS and the TOP PROG tool results.
I will work on this ...

Many changes during the past days to the TOP PROG ALBUM tool and the sub-genre list of key albums.
Basically , the algorithm is mostly the same, it's the default value use in the calculation that have changed.
Here the updated info describing the calculations variables and filters in the TOP PROG ALBUM tool:
Here is some details about how we calculate the average rating of an album and the rank of an album.
-
Average rating: The classic calculation of the average but more weight
is affected to the rating of progarchives.com collaborators and to
rating with reviews.
- Rating only: Weight = 1
- Review by members : Weight = 5
- Review by PA Collaborators : Weight = 10
- Rank of an album: We use a calculation that compare an album
average rating and number of ratings over all others albums in the
query using this theory ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weighted_average - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weighted_average )
- By default, only albums with at the number of ratings above the
average number of ratings in the query and only albums with at the
average ratings above the average ratings in the query are displayed in
theses lists
The results have changed in both the PA TOP 100 PROG albums and in the
sub-genre too because of the changes in the default variables.
Please post your sugg. and comments here.
