How would you categorise this album? When a freind recommended it to me, the name Savatage itself created visions of a thrash/grunge/death metal band. But he insisted that I gave it a listen & not be so pre-judgemental. Well, all I can say is that I'm glad I took his advise! The Wake Of Magellan is one of the best concept albums i've ever heard. Is it prog though?

They're classed as Prog-Metal on this site. To me, they've always sounded like a basic metal band with keyboards. However, they're still one of my favourite bands. Check out "Poets and Madmen"... definately sounds more proggier.

yes, it's amazing. I would indeed categorize it as prog metal, only more metal than prog, that is, less complexity, but still complex and with an "orchestral" feel, so to speak. Magellan's last 3 albums show them exploring more defying structutures in a metal context. If there was a label such as "art metal rock", they would fit in.
