I've recently been doing some research on these bands and others that belong in the post-metal category. This is the only site that specifically labels them as "progressive".

By a certain definition, they have progressed several genres of music, including atmospheric/ post- sludge metal and the artisticality of low tuned, deep metal.

But I've not specifically seen them as progressive except under this website. Which brings us to the discussion, why did they put these bands under the PA? and have they failed to recognize bands that have progressed music in other ways?

All three bands are Post Metal, and we categorise them as such. That's all there is to it really. Smile http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_metal -  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_metal

Interesting. I see that it originates from progressive metal as well as a list of other musical genres. Both the eclectic style and its coming from prog metal must be huge contributing factors.

Well let's put it this way. They are definitely progressive music dynamically, Isis especially, with the whole starting out at a very thin texture and building up to an explosion of atmospheric metal. They also bust down about as many boundaries as any band on this site. So that's why they are progressive metal.

They are not progressive in the traditional sense of the term but within the metal realm i'd say they are extremely progressive especially Neurosis.Neurosis started incorporating violin, chellos, and keys into a very metalic framework as early as 1990 which was very un-metal for the genre at that time.

Swans-The Great Annihilator
Fog In The Shell-Private South

Maybe not Pelican, but the one Isis album I've heard (Panopticon) I'd say has more in common with prog/art rock then with the sludge metal they're usually identified with. It's not decadent and depraved enough!

Their music is Progressive, i would not call them Prog bands. I do think they deserve to be on the site. Very fine bands they are.

Mmmmm... I love these three groups.

Why wouldnt Pelican be progressive? They are arguably the most bombastic of the three! Listen to the Fire in our throats.
