Okay gents (and ladies especially), I am planning on making a mix CD for my wife of lovely pieces of prog, but the "hidden track" will be a song I wrote for her a very long time ago. This will be my anniversary gift to her this year (in addition to mind-blowing sex).
Multiple votes are checked, so go nuts. Choose the pieces you think would make for a great little compilation for a gal who likes Cat Stevens, contemporary Christian music, some country and blues, Norah Jones and basically all things acoustic.
These are all tracks (well almost anyway) I think she will enjoy. I know her best, but you geniuses know great music. I want to hear what you think will make a good compilation CD for an anniversary (that will end with a surprise song from yours truly ).
Go to it!

Happy anniversary!
I suggested Tull, Hackett, and the Floyd.
I notice there's no Gentle Giant on this list.

From the Beginning, June, The Carpet Crawlers, Aspirations... that's like, automatic getting laid music right there.

I would add Formentera Lady by KC.

She sounds like she's on a pretty similar page musically to my girlfriend. With that in mind, my Beck loves June and Lazarus. Also, she has a thing for the Decemberists, but not really any of those in any specific sense. Maybe Summer Song or The Crane Wife 3?

The Porcupine Tree and Decemberists tracks are all great.

Also, I think that the Gentle Giant track Think of Me with Kindness should be included. That twangs the female heartstrings. At least in the one case I really care about.

Hackett's The Virgin & The Gypsy would probably work the best out of all listed.

Lazarus for me, if only because my lovely wife thought it utterly beautiful when I first played it to her. She's not easily impressed by prog

Izz - I Believe
Iona - Today
Peter Gabriel - Here Comes the Flood (solo piano version)
----Carpet Crawlers would be extremely creepy in this context.
------------- You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Is that the one from Fripp's "exposure" album?

Shaking the Tree version is the one I know best, I actually wasn't aware the song appeared on the Fripp album until now. Apparently every version since the debut album is the stripped down arrangement, and was actually Gabriel's initial intention but he was overruled by Bob Ezrin.

Honestly, all of these are very good choices. Well since your wife likes christian music, Neal Morse is a good idea. Then try June, and if you're lucky and she likes both of those you can play The Great Nothing.
Happy Anniversary and best wishes to you and "Mrs. Epignosis"

Been there- won't do that again.
I had it on in the car one time, and it got to one part and she says, "I like this!"
Unfortunately, she can't stomach the other 22 minutes of it.

I made the same mistake, except with "At The End of The Day"
Luckily for me, there was only 10 minutes left that she couldn't handle

Congrats! Have a nice wedding anniversary day! Spock's Beard, Neal Morse, Pink Floyd, Tull, ELP and some more might give a good mix.

Coming Like Light by IZZ. Some of the most beautiful words ever and it still an epic:
"When she speaks to me and stares into my eyes
I am suddenly aware that I am alive there's no more lies
So I reach for her and she moves closer to me
whispering a secret faithfully
She says to love someone is
to learn the song that is inside their heart
and to sing it to them when
they cannot remember how it starts
I will sing your song when you need it my love
I will sing your song be sure that with me you belong"
Can't think of a better anniversary gift than that.
Happy Anniversary!

Out of those I know, Rest Will Flow, seems to have the best lyrics for a wedding anniversary. Optimism for the future, unless I heard them wrong.

Ha! Becky loves The Light. Which is strange, because it's one of maybe four Spock's Beard songs she actually likes. I think she just has to give the rest of their stuff a chance, give the odd stuff some more time to settle in. Maybe I'll just give her all of V and Snow and see where this gets her. Hm. Sorry. Continue with the thread about YOUR woman.

I went with "From the begining".
Speaking of which on the way home last night, KHTS played "Yours in no disgrace" and "From the begining", back to back. I can't remember hearing two prog songs babk to back on the radio. It was epic.

My wife, a staunch prog-hater, told me Lazarus was "pretty good", so that probably would work.

We're on number six.
Say, isn't the sixth year traditional wedding gift prog?
We're going to The Cheesecake Factory tonight.
I also recorded a little song I wrote years ago for her. It's as a "hidden track" on the 16-song CD I made for her, so she'll have to listen through all of it to hear it.

Wow. Most place I've lived the wait at CF by 6:00 gets to be an hour minimum.
I was once told the wait was three hours!

Were that an issue, we'd ease on up the road to The Olive Garden (she likes that place about as much).
But I do declare, I am looking forward to relishing a delicious mint julep this fine evening.
