I've heard great things about this band but I have yet to listen to them. Is their album is fully streaming? I remember it used to be at least.

...Figured I'd use my first post on a band that are very very very close to my heart! Not the most neutral review in terms of bias, by any means, but hopefully useful to anyone who thinks they might be interested in checking this band out in more detail!! _____ The new Karnivool album "Sound Awake" is a twisting, up and down ride through the melody-drenched depths of Australia's Prog Rock sons! A leaner, meaner, darker and more mature record and undoubtably their best yet... This ain't no "difficult" second album. I've been a fan of the band since they put out the first album, "Themata", however the new LP is something quite different! The album has so many subtle nuances to it that you can listen to it every day for a month straight (and I have) and still hear new entities in the sound. This record has a great sense of sonic space and a more natural sound than the first full-length. Ian Kenny (Vocals)'s delivery is incredible and he's got some really interesting lyrical themes going on. The lyrics and vocal melodies themselves are very strong and often lie as a firm focal point alongside really solid ensemble playing from the band. The guitar playing is very expressive throughout with lots of different styles encompassed. Nice use of effects and some standout moments where the two of them let it rip, such as the end of the track "Deadman" which builds to a heavy but melodic finish with some great syncopated grooving throughout the band to bring the song to a close. Steve Judd's drumming is one of the real highlights for me as a drummer - he plays with a lot of groove and feel but not sacrificing the kind of power and drive needed to power a band such as Karnivool. I find it very difficult to narrow this album down to a few stand out tracks, because I think it's peaks and troughs lie in exactly the right places. It's a very very well crafted album that flows incredibly well. I'd strongly advise anyone who has an interest in vast, forward-thinking, highly melodic rock music with a definite progressive streak to check "Sound Awake". There are a few tracks from the album up on their MySpace and more on the official website, as well as on YouTube and such. There's a really cool video for the 1st single "Set Fire To The Hive" on the net and if you've got a spare ten minutes, check out this live video of the track "Deadman" I mentioned earlier. A bit of an epic this one, pretty well through-composed with little theme developments and such. I think it's a really great piece of modern prog rock! I hope they do! It's a great album. I don't know if it's been released in the USA yet? There's a tentative UK release for sometime in early 2010 - February(ish), but I wanted the physical copy and just ordered it in from jb hi-fi in Aus. Karnivool are a fantastic band, and one which definitely deserves to be included on this site under the Heavy Prog category. If you like them and haven't already checked out Cog as well, you should do so. ^ I'd recommend their latest album 'Sound Awake'. They've only released two full length albums, the later having been released last year. Highly intricate, diverse, dynamic, eclectic and a unique blend of melodic progressive metal and alternative rock. Themata is a brilliant, brilliant anthemic rock record BUT it isn't overly progressive. However the new album, Sound Awake, is very much a prog record. The PMT have listened to the "Sound Awake" album and we don´t feel that there are enough "metal" elements on the album to warrant an inclusion in one of the three metal subs, so we´ve asked the heavy prog team to take over the evaluation. It has been approved for Heavy Prog, but additions are a lot of work and it's on the list to be added. Maybe if you or someone else offered to prepare the addition it would speed things up. ------------- Just a fanboy passin' through. |
