I'm kind of a jazz newb but I've really liked what I've heard so far from Miles and Coltrane. I have all of Davis' late-sixties and early-seventies fusion work and really dig it, plus I love Kind of Blue, but I don't really have any other of Miles jazz stuff. I have a few Coltrane albums which I really like (A Love Surpreme, Giant Steps, and My Favorite Things), but both guys have absurdly massive catalogs and I'm kind of overwhelmed as to where to go next. Recommend me some more albums to get from these giants of jazz.

Beyond his electric releases, I'm a bit useless as far as Miles is concerned - but if you don't have the early electric releases, i.e., Miles in the Sky & Filles de Kilimanjaro, they're well worth a listen ...for Coltrane, check out Ascention & Expression  |

For Coltrane, I strongly recommend Ascension and second Blue Train. If you are interested in the Coltrane Quartet also, try Crescent. Miles Davis has also the great Sorcerer album, only the last track might be.. distracting. And when you are looking for both, there is the 'Round about Midnight release. |

Coltrane: Crescent, Olé, Impressions, Sun Ship. I agree with every suggested Miles Davis so far. Have you got the masterpiece (but somewhat forgotten): Get Up With It + the awsome livealbum: Dark Magus too? Coltrane: Africa/Brass, Impressions, Ascension (there are a lot more good ones, but I haven't been able to find them at the store, so I can't in good conscience recommend things to you which I haven't really listened to) Davis: Milestones, Sketches of Spain, Birth of the Cool, In a Silent Way, A Tribute to Jack Johnson -------------

For Miles, Miles Davis In Person At The Blackhawk is recommended. Great stuff. Also as others have mentioned Get Up With It/On The Corner...anything from that era.
Coltrane's Ballads is very good as some late night or early morning mood, i.e., non-intrusive, music. ------------- Can you tell me where we're headin'? Lincoln County Road or Armageddon. |
