My two favourite bands in the world; and yet I think DT has the edge for me, simply because of the sheer intensity and emotion that can consumes their music, and their diversity and development as a band. Damn, Opeth ARE awesome, though.

I love both but OPETH all the way.... Dream Theater have some weak albums, opeth have no weak albums in my opinion, also when Mikael sings cleanly it is beautiful, and far nicer than the wails of Lebrie. Dream Theater produced SFAM, so by default they have to win. Opeth is great as well, but Dream Theater wins on this one.

Dream Theater are an amazing band for a handful of albums, but they have some mediocre and bad albums. Opeth on the other hand never match DT's peak, but just have a string of amazing albums up until Watershed. That was cryptic.
Opeth is on another level c/t DT in terms of creating art rather than instrumental mayhem. I certainly enjoy my doses of the latter but there's a difference between really good candy and a real good entree. ------------- You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. Opeth. DT has been absolutely musically stagnant since Train of Thought, while Opeth has been tweaking their sound with every album, and each one sounds fresher than the one before. Opeth gets my vote. I like Dream Theater, but Labrie's voice just doesn't do it for me. Only like it on Images and Words and Octavarium.

I'm not big on growling (though I love Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye), but I definitely prefer Opeth's compositions. It's interesting that most of the posters here seem to prefer Opeth, yet most of the voters prefer DT, and that a poll with such a huge number of votes (171), at this time, has only made it to page 2. Now it's at page 3 with this post. PS Sorry to the Strawbs. ;)

DT focusses very much on musicianship, Opeth has the greater songwriting and more eye for atmosphere. If I had make a top 10 out of all the albums of both bands, DT would only be on a 6th spot with Awake |

Very tough choice. I'll base my choice on the band that is infinately better in a live setting.
DREAMTHEATER.
I've seen both bands in the same venue and there was no comparison.

Well you guys should stop putting down the great band Dream Theater and just because you guys don't like them that doesn't mean they suck. that is your personal opion. that's it!

Like both bands, they are nearly equaly important to the progmetal scene and groundbraking BUT i think the gloomy sound of Opeth is more for me, BUT then again Opeth never made Images and Words which is a landmark album in Progressive Metal which evry progmetal band will be compared against (like KCs - ICotCK) so DIFFICULT, i have not heard all Dream Theater albums but I have heard ALOT of songs and concert DVDs to make a perspective, verry grate band but all the soloing can be a little bit booring. and all ar stone faced (even though it is verry technical music ) you can smile , the vocalist in Satyricon smiles more. well Mike is fun to watch and like to get atention (he is my favourite member ), Jorden Rudess is cool but he bends tooo much tones with his tone-bender thing on the keybord, (even thoe its fun to play with it on the sparetime, ive done it myself  ). but dont get me wrong im verry much a fan of Dream Theater one of my 20 favourite bands while Opeth is in topp 10 DT is 13 or something |

I'm getting into Opeth having got 5 of their CDs for Christmas and I really like them, but my vote goes to Dream Theater who are one of my top 3 favourite bands (along with Floyd & Iron Maiden).

A few years ago I would say: "Dream Theater all the way". Today it's not so obvious anymore but I guess I value them more than Opeth.
