Top 5 prog bands with female lead singer

There were not many in the 70s except perhaps Curved Air, Renaissance and Mostly Autumn. But these days there is the new wave of female Goth opera style singers with symponic metal bands such as Epica, Nightwish and After Forever. Lately other bands with female singers include Blood Ceremony, Panic Room and Karnataka with Anne-Marie Helder and Rachel Jones. There are heaps of others.

My list is as follows:

  1. Mostly Autumn - Heather Findlay
  2. Epica - Simone Simons
  3. Renaissance - Annie Haslam
  4. Curved Air - Sonja Kristina
  5. Nightwish - Tarja

Blimey, I know Findlay and Josh look a bit under the weather sometimes, but a 70's band?Confused

Mine definitely include the brand new Mostly Autumn, Magenta, Curved Air, The Reasoning, and a non prog band Fleetwood Mac, because I have always adored Christine McVie's voice.

1) Frumpy with Inga Rumpf. Incredible voice, but not for those who like female vocals to be sweet and innocent. Inga shouts and really rocks.
2) Art Bears with Dagmar Krause. Many don't like Dagmar Krause; I do.
3) Curved Air with Sonja Kristina.
4) Catapilla with Anna Meek. Another shouter!
5) The Red Masque with Lynette Shelley. Yeah, you guessed it, a shouter.

Lots of good singers listed.  There is a band that played Rosfest and is playing Calprog this year form England who has a female lead called Touchstone.  Will let you know after I see them . Of course my all time favorite is Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick.

Why must my spell-checker continually underline the word "prog"?

Posted By: Nuke
Date Posted: July 15 2009 at 19:03

Hmm, I don't know whether to name my top singers or my top prog bands with female singers, so this list is sort of a hybrid...

1. Lisa Gerrard...Dead Can Dance - Honest opinion, best band on my list, pretty good vocals too.

2. Floor Jansen...After Forever - Pretty much the only clean female singer who really knows what it means to be metal. First time I heard them, I was blown away by how her vocals easily overpowered the growls, as if rob halford had joined in a death metal band. Not to mention they are my all time favorite symphonic metal band.

3. Kate Bush - Of course. I love great pop singers, and if kate bush has qualified as proto-prog, than I'm shooing her in this list.

4. Simone Simons...Epica - I include this for the band, not the singing. Epica somehow went from complete rubbish to one of my favorite bands. It probably has something to do with their fascination with classical music. Listening to and writing that stuff can only help you as a musician. Simone is much better these days than when she started, but still isn't worthy of being considered a great singer. At her rate of improvement, she'll be worthy of the title "great" within the next 3 albums.

5. Anneke van Giersbergen...The Gathering - Another one I include more for the band than the singer.

It's interesting that my list sways so heavily towards modern metal. I guess I somehow missed all of the old bands with female singers...

Can't add to any of these lists as things are well covered imo, but I will say I'm mildly shocked at the low number of votes for Renaissance.

Edit: image link changed.

Of interest to folks in this thread, when I was searching google images for this shot of Haslam I came across this...

Prog or not, Kate Bush is amazing, period.  Let's see, other than Renaissance Wink, purely on the strength of First Utterance, Comus makes a strong case though it's a twin lead we're talking about.  And then, Spirogyra.  And that's it, I don't really care for Curved Air, Mostly Autumn Or Karnataka, either the singer or the music doesn't do much for me, as applicable.  How about Magma and Shub-Niggurath, though I don't know if I can call those operatic chants as female LEADs, if yes, then Magma wins the thread for me because their music is the strongest of all these bands I mentioned.  Clap  And for something from the metal side, how about The Gathering, strange to see only two mentions of this band.

Curved Air
Jefferson Airplane
String Driven Thing
Its a Beautiful Day
Renaissance
Affinity
Babe Ruth
Magic Carpet

If the traditional folk bands included there are a heap of others (Fairport, Trees, Fotheringay, Pentangle, Spriguns of Tolgus, Spirogyra, Tudor Lodge etc) but i've never been quite sure how they qualify as prog.

hah HolyMoly that's funny with Jon Anderson! I'm glad girls don't really sing like him though Dead.

I've only heard Ren-as-ance and I wasn't overly impressed, though I appreciate Haslam's vocals especially on "It's All Over Baby Blue" from Howe's portraits of Bob Dylan

Also, Kiki Dee on Freudiana (APP) "Your On Your Own" Clair Torrey (spelling) on "Don't Hold Back" APP, from Eve.

I don't think too, too much of Phideaux's female vocals

Non Progwise, cuz I have to, Definitely Berlin, my favorite female vocal'ed band (Teri Nunn). They are New Wave and famous for "Take My Breath Away." Try em'. Hint: "Pink And Velvet" from Count To Three and Pray, with one of David Gilmour's best solos.

There was a funny story about Berlin from the Yes tour of 90125 in the States. They had been lined up to support the band, Anderson found out about it, and said "who the f*** are they? Don't want them on my tour", which is why (and it was continued into the UK) we had the far preferable Loony Toons as the support act.

Daffy Duck & Bugs over Berlin any dayLOL
