Shadowfax is an American band formed in 1972 by flautist Chuck Greenberg. There is a lot to read on their wikipedia page, and if that's not enough, I will link more as soon as I get up in the morning. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowfax_%28band%29 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowfax_%28band%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowfax_%28band -

I've known this band since their first debut album in the late '70's.

Not a good fit for crossover but excellent for symphonic.  (Strictly talking about Watercourse Way, somewhat Tongue.)

Their first album is one of those overlooked masterpieces of progressive music..  They went off the radar screen for a while but reappeared with an album on the Windham Hill label a short few years later.  They redid a few tracks from the original, quite well, I might add.  I've still got the LPs (vinyls for some if that's the term you know, they were called records back then).

The album cover on the original was excellent, though the last time I tried to dig it up, it wasn't available on the internet.   This was their most hard hitting one I've heard so far.

Excellent mellow music on Watercourse Way and their Windham Way albums, occasionally in the earlier stuff but that was the focus of the latter.  But back to the music for the original, it's an obscure gem.  The later stuff much less so impressive, but excellent mellow music that doesn't fit perfectly into the mold of '80's new age music even though they re=did a few track from WW.

Chuck Greenberg, I think died a while ago, and then the band was retired, so to speak.  I still haven't tried or found much of their later music.  I'll admit I haven't been looking too hard for it.  They seemed to be headed back in a more progressive direction with Dreams Of Children, but that was the point where I quit following them.  Still on my agenda to explore the rest.

Footnote:
Watercourse Way was re-released by Windham Hill in CD and LP format without the original cover art, sadly WW was not released with the original art, but the the WH standard format art at the time.

Greenberg died in 1990, RIP. I put them on Crossover as I thought it was sort of New-Age, and because they sort of followed the New-Age format like Oldfield, which is classed as Crossover, I put them in Crossover.

Any New Age albums listed in the PA are only here because the band/artist also did 100% Prog albums. If Shadowfax only did New Age albums then the band will not be listed; if the first album is Progressive Rock then they have a chance of being added.

While New Age has simularities with Progressive Rock, it is a seperate genre of music and is generally simpler and less "dynamic" (for want of a better word) - put frankly - it doesn't "Rock". While I agree that some New Age artists were really Prog artists that were tagged as New Age for pure commercial reasons (eg Stephen Caudell) and some Prog artists produced New Age music (eg Rick Wakemen) most New Age artists set out to make New Age music.

Watercourse Way is in the styling of Tubular Bells. Both are new age, both rock.

Shadowfax has been firmly placed in my record colelction's jazz fusion section since the late 70's, and even the Indo jazz fusion sub-section. Beware if they are included you may find them in the jazz Rock Fusion section of PA.

I won't say every track is Indo, but at times I feel Shadowfax is in a similar area to Oregon musically.

Ah, you found it.  Big smile

The first album has some elements that good new age music may have borrowed from.  If new age = boring crap, you will find nothing of the sort on their debut.

Dick's absolutely right, the first one is a good fit for JRF and the ones that I am familiar with do have some similarities to Oregon.

I dunno, maybe they actually did squeeze out one remaster before Greenburg was lost to us.

Anyway, the original Watercourse Way cover, only bigger:

Reminds me of some Ozric Tentacle album cover art, which of course came later.

A random thought that just occurred to me, how much did the term Art Rock come in to common usage back the due to the really cool album cover art?

Nah - fairly sure it was Pete Townshend who first use the term and he was refering to bands that were formed by students at Art schools and colleges (he himself went to Ealing Art College).

I agree about Watercourse Way.  It definitely belongs here.  The rest, I'm not so sure.
Dean wrote "if the first album is Progressive Rock then they have a chance of being added."
If having one prog album allows you in, that opens the flood gates for all of those jazz artists who made at least one good fusion album.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

I highly doubt that. There are a lot of fusion bands that:

A) Did not have a first album which was proggy/fusiony enough
B) Would be called flooders and will be either removed from the site or their requests will be removed

We are aware of that and that is why I said "...a chance of being added" and not "...will be added". Wink

If the non-Prog contribution far outweights the one Prog album then it is very likely that they would be added to Prog Related rather than a full Prog category.

When it comes to Jazz fusion, the "fusion" still has to be "Prog"

A) is irrelevant then.

B) No - that's why we have Genre teams and an evaluation process - no one can flood our system since only a select few are allowed to add bands. Also the rule is once a band is added their full discography must be listed - with no exceptions - so if we accept a band because of one Prog album then we expect all the non-prog albums to be listed.

Looks like we are influenced by which album we heard first wrt Shadowfax. This was mine:

and with the opening number New Electric India , a scene/viewpoint was set in my mind.
Prog Ears has them as JR/F / World Music

GEPR: "Their first album Watercourse Way was a stunning mixture of blistering guitar driven jazz-rock http://www.gepr.net/genre2.html#FUSION - fusion , cerebral piano acoustics and powerful dynamics. Shadowfax, at the time, appeared to be one of the most promising new bands around. Unfortunately it took them seven years to do their next album, and in the meantime they'd squandered their brilliance, as the new stuff (and all albums since) was merely warmed-up new-age world music that couldn't cut through soft butter. You know I've never actually inventoried them but as far as the prog ones I started with a couple of Wakeman's sometime in the '70's maybe '76 or '77.  Stopped sometime in the early '90's or late '80's and exclusively with CDs.  I'm still pretty much an exclusively CD and DVD guy these days.  Still can't get into paying for just a download.  Need something tangible.

Back to Shadowfax, Dean have you heard any tracks off the first one?

I found some streaming here:
http://www.last.fm/music/Shadowfax/+charts?rangetype=week&subtype=tracks - http://www.last.fm/music/Shadowfax/+charts?rangetype=week&subtype=tracks

I'll get back to you on the one's you should try.  Gotta get ready for work.

I ordered up a used copy of Too Far To Whisper.  Just noticed that Windows Media Player categorizes all their albums as jazz, go figure.  I think they were headed back into prog rock territory with The Dreams Of Children.  This one seems headed more back into new-agey territory.
