These are two highly acclaimed NON DT prog metal bands, and I thought I'd make a faceoff between the two.

For me it's Pain of Salvation without a question, but not everyone agrees with me on this.

So Let the competition begin!Tongue

I like the X, but there is no way in hell they are anywhere near as progressive or  innovative as Pain Of Salvation.

No way.

I agree. Pain of Salvation is quite unique and interesting, and although Symphony X is nice and is comprised of good musicians, they're power metal, which for me is a quite boring genre of music.

Especially when you take their latest releases into account. I fear they, like DT, are moving closer and closer towards a more conventional take on the Metal genre, and as a result it's causing the music to stagnate somewhat. I think Symphony X is absolutely fantastic when at their best, but at their average, they are exactly as you said; Power Metal. Unfortunately.

I think the less actual Symphonic influence their is in their music, the less original they become. Cry

This poll would be a lot easier for me if Symphony X did not release Odysee, Twilight in Olympus and V. Pain of Salvation gets my vote, though, for at least four great albums (by the way: Remedy Lane!), originality and atmosphere. No, I will not compare vocalists here..

There's some sense in this comment but erase Twilight in this line up for me. Odyssey and V are two albums that haven't been topped by PoS so SX gets my vote.
But overall PoS is the better band I have to admit (more versatile and more progressive).

Although PoS released a strangely mediocre (IMO) album recently, I'll still vote for them because Symphony X simply became a self-cover band...

...and PoS rock the house, no doubt there. Originality, new sound, great verstatility which is what Symphony X lacks.

PoS blows Symphony X out of the water. However, I will check out their 'New Mythology Suite' album, to give them another chance.

I personally find that to be an extremely overrated album. I recommend you hear The Divine Wings of Tragedy next (that's my favorite from them).

I discovered both bands at around the same time and I really liked both of them.  Remedy Lane and Be are superb albums and of course I had to track down the rest of their albums.  To the same extent I thought that Odyssey and V: The New Mythology Suite were both wonderful albums, and I had to track down the rest of their discography as well.  With both bands I was really pleased with what I found.  Unfortunately, after discovering both bands, Pain of Salvation released Scarsick Dead and Symphony X released Paradise Lost Dead and I had my 2 most disappointing releases of 2007.  That being said my vote goes to Pain of Salvation.

Gee, I would, except that's one of the albums that failed to impress me. Although, I did remember enjoying 'The Accolade'. But the album on the whole just sounds like lots of neoclassical shredding to me. I may well be missing out on the essence of their music.

I like both, but only one band has an album in my top 5, or #1 for sure if I'm depressed.

Also, Pain of Salvation is just more original and exciting. Even Scarsick is interesting and varied, and fairly original.

The albums I consider masterpieces...

Quality -

Remedy Lane+Perfect Element
>V, Divine Wings, Twilight, Odyessey

Quantity -

4>2

It's tough, but I voted for the underdog.

Pain Of Salvation for me. I'm a big fan of both bands, and both are very good at what they do, but PoS takes the cake.

PoS, almost always fresh, innovative and complex with some lovely melodies. I have to admit that I truly hate Scarsick but that's still nowhere near the amount of mediocre albums that Symphony X has produced.

The only comparison where it is remotely close is vocalists, and DG still wins for his superior power, versatility, and range.  PoS is so much more innovative and unique, and lyric-wise PoS wins by more than a mile (I won't even bring up BE) music you can REALLY feel (I've nearly cried to Vocari Dei, Song for the Innocent, Kingdom of Loss, etc.)

The clear winner for me is Pain of Salvation

I kinda like Symphony X - I like the New Mythology Suite particularly. BUt PoS are more innovative, more creative, more progressive.

In fact, they are really on a different level IMO

I bought The Odyssey, and all I thought was who I could sell this CD away to?

Their style appeals much more to me than PoS. However Pain of Salvation is still great.

I don't think that Symphony X will ever release a  bad album like Scarsick, but they probably never will come close to the first 5 Pain of Salvation studio albums, not to mention 12:5 and the Be DVD.
So Pain of Salvation obviously.Smile

Pain of Salvation, based on what I've heard. I only have Remedy Lane, and Paradise Lost, respectively, by these two bands. But I am eager to hear more. Any recommendations from X or PoS fans? I'm a big DT fan, and asked a friend 'I want to hear more music like this'. So I discovered PoS and Symphony X.

Paradise Lost is a good album, in my opinion. However, Remedy Lane is more original. Maybe those two aren't the best ones to compare. I'll have to hear more from both bands.

Pain of Salvation is highly overrated. I have all albums from both bands, and PoS has yet to impress me at all. Russell Allen is far superior to PoS's vocalist. PoS might as well stand for Piece of sh*t. Symphony X is better in every way. I think PoS might be okay if they got a new vocalist.

"In terms of consistency, Symphony X"
Consistency is often the opposite of progression.  Danny G said himself that Pain of Salvation was not about recreating success, but experimenting and bringing new surprises to their music, which is what "progressive" should be.

My vote goes to Pain of Salvation.  They have been one of my favorite bands since my formative musical years in high school around the late 90s.

But it really depends on what you're going for... the two really have completely different sounds.  Symphony X has the extravagant, epic neo-classical sound.  Pain of Salvation is more thought provoking, mixes more styles, and tends to push the boundaries a lot more.  I'm with dtismajesty... Pain of Salvation is more progressive in the purest sense of the word.

...don't know what to think about the whole banjo thing though.

I wonder how PoS would do in a versus poll against Ayreon or Riverside. If they were up against Opeth or Porcupine Tree, they would likely lose because of the popularity of those 2 bands.

PoS by a million miles. Symphony X is technically fantastic, nothing more.
PoS is lyrically sensitive and brilliant, compositionally jaw dropping and technically fantastic.
