Months have passed. Promises were made and broken. Numbers were crunched. Tears were shed. Nails were bitten. Anticipation is at an all time high. And now, the moment is here.
So I have the results. You have ideas, feel free to discuss. A teaser list of 301-400 is on its way. Be excited, this is the all genre, all format, no holds barred list that YOU, the humble PA user submitted from December to March and here is the result.
BE EXCITED!

Feel free to discuss ideas on this year's list, last year's list, and the results as they are posted. Here is a link to last year's results in case you have forgotten.

Quite a few of my choices there, I would've expected a lot higher place for Seventh Son.

Well this is going to look very different from the prog poll....which is awesome!!!

Mindcrime at 301....what is this world coming to???

Quite a few I'm surprised to see that low, Nevermind being the biggest.
Look forward to the rest, and thanks for crunching the numbers. I know how much work the data entry is. How many polls did you do?

I salute you Kate Bush, thought you should have fared better.  Btw, see all that tagging gobbledy-gook at the start of you list?  Can't get rid of it right?  I couldn't either.  I finally had to post from regular Text Edit instead of Office product.

Why must my spell-checker continually underline the word "prog"?

The Dreaming is actually one of my favorite albums, really sad to see it so low.

And yeah I tried getting rid of the blue text thing. It's a stubborn little pest.

Animal Collective and Black Dice were both excellent. Thanks for asking. A lot off MPP and Strawberry Jam. Really jammy electronics between songs that linked it quite nicely.

These should be higher I think...
Van Morrison  "Astral Weeks"
Colosseum  "Valentyne Suite"
Queensrych  "Operation Mindcrime"
Jethro Tull  "Benefit"
Nektar  "A Tab In The Ocean"

I'd place Weather Report's Black Market and motW's Bath higher. Very surprised for Io Sono Nato Libero's ranking.

I think #s 367 and 366 are the only ones I know that were on my list. This could be good or bad, meaning some of my favorites are higher up or not even on the list. I just hope the former is true.

You're telling me Cry

Two of my favorite bands seem to be shafted so far, Radiohead and The Decemberists (granted this was before I spread the fanboyism throughout the site like a virus). RPI fans seemed mostly absent, as well as post fans and there is one huge prog band that really got deserted by its fans this year, you'll all see which later on in the list.

I wonder what the top album not on this site is going to be. Last year I believe it was AJFA or MOP by Metallica, though they're in the archives now.

I was hoping NIN's TDS would have it, but it appears that Illinoise is 201, and I bet there are going to be ones higher than that.

It was And Justice for All

and yes there are many more non-prog albums coming. I might do another 50 if people are up for it.

I was hoping NIN's TDS would have it, but it appears that Illinoise is 201, and I bet there are going to be ones higher than that.

It was And Justice for All

and yes there are many more non-prog albums coming. I might do another 50 if people are up for it.

Sure. Go ahead Smile

Also more food for thought:

Most albums that made the list had only 2 votes or more. Having so many new additions means these are all albums that got two or fewer votes last year, usually just one. It's amazing to see some of them so high.

Except AC/DC. The do not deserve to be up there. Angry

Makes me wonder why these are so high compared to other classics, they seem a bit disliked in terms of what most people like. Though ObZen was on my list.

I made my list over six months ago and it isn't really representative of my music taste anymore... I've moved on to mostly non-prog stuff for good now, it seems.

Having said that, Rock Bottom dropping over one hundred places is a travesty! On a more positive note, I'm pleased to having contributed to some great new debuts like Remain in Light, Future Days, Arcade Fire's Funeral and Ulver's Blood Inside Smile

Kudos to moreitsythanyou!

I was left in suspense... Which could be the huge group that was deserted? My guess is Jethro Tull.

Oh, and the sample should be larger next year! Maybe shorter lists but more people sending them? Moreitsy, what has a bigger impact on the workload: the amount of lists or the size of the lists?

I pretty much expected that ther would be two groups for my top 10 albums: some would barely make it or not at all and the others would be pretty high.

It would be interesting to see how are 2008 - 2009 albums faring...

Trilogy is probably the most consistent ELP release , since there are no weak tracks in the album. Trilogy may be a good point of entry to those who are unfamiliar to ELP and keyboard dominated prog. (Crimson87 - #64)

99. Genesis - Wind and Wuthering (8 votes - 1359 points)
Last Year - N/A    Highest rating: #18 by RaulGuate
PA Top Chart - 98
I really like every song on this album. It's a very varied album with many highlights. A complete and diverse album causing a very enjoyable listen for over 50 minutes. (progrules #87)

98. Opeth - Still Life (7 votes - 1407 points)
Last Year - 31    Highest rating: #1 by Birdwithteeth11
PA Top Chart - 46
It displays a wide variety of emotions, it is music that's intelligent, powerful, and beautiful and offers something new and exciting at every corner. At the same time, it's very dark and foreboding and reaches into the deepest corners of our psyche, sometimes into places that we may not want to travel, in fact even feel uncomfortable in. This album is almost like a religious experience every time I listen to it, however cheesy that may sound. (Birdwithteeth11)

97. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (8 votes - 1410 points)
Last Year - 110   Highest rating: #3 by Crimson87
PA Top Chart - N/A
It still has the classic Zep sound that is never quite present after this album. From here the production gets a little slicker, the focus seems to get lost, something that I love about Zep is not quite there. (Negoba #35)

96. Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo (9 votes - 1414 points)
Last Year - 117    Highest rating: #28 by AndersonIII
PA Top Chart - 139

95. Yes - Going for the One (8 votes - 1417 points)
Last Year - 393   Highest rating: #2 by Rojm30
PA Top Chart - 111
Going for the One does have some trouble drawing people into its rather diverse moods and styles. The musicianship is without a doubt outstanding and "Awaken" [10/10] is, IMO, the greatest prog song ever written, but accessibility is somewhat lacking, even from the "pretty" songs (Brufordfreak #91)

94. Black Sabbath - Paranoid (9 votes - 1418 points)
Last Year - 68   Highest rating: #3 by Chris H
PA Top Chart - N/A

93. Opeth - Watershed (9 votes - 1419 points)
Last Year - N/A   Highest rating: #15 by topofsm
PA Top Chart - N/A
After a couple months of listening I can honestly say that I enjoy listening to this one frequently. It's a good one to blast in the car when I'm going somewhere, and it seems like the kind of record that is good whether you listen to it all at once or in different parts. It's got some beautiful parts, and some very brutal parts. (topofsm)

92. Devin Townsend - Terria (7 votes - 1426 points)
Last Year - 89   Highest rating: #16 by Mr. Progfreak
PA Top Chart - 108
This is Devin's masterpiece. The following album has more hooks and catchy tunes, but this one is truly majestic, epic and utterly wonderful. I give it 5 stars without any hesitation. This is a complex work of art (Mr. Progfreak/MikeEnRegalia)

91. Jethro Tull - Songs from the Wood (8 votes - 1447 points)

Sorry to hear that Keppa. Well there were some really impressive debuts in that one. Here's the next batch:

90. Pink Floyd - The Wall (8 votes - 1450 points)
Last Year - 73    Highest rating: #2 by p0mt3
PA Top Chart - 89
IMO this is a masterpiece ... even though there are other Pink Floyd albums that are even better. it might even be considered easy listening by the standards established by their previous albums. (Mr. Progfreak/MikeEnRegalia #63)

89. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin (7 votes - 1456 points)
Last Year - 69   Highest rating: #11 by Crimson87
PA Top Chart - N/A
Led Zeppelin did not become popular because of which songs they picked to cover or adapt. They are popular because of their sound, the expansion of their use of the album as their canvas and the studio as their palette. (Negoba #20)

88. Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All (7 votes - 1486 points)
Last Year - 121    Highest rating: #3 by Manwithhat
PA Top Chart - 193
The music is quite eclectic, fusing elements from so many different genres to one. Zappa does not rush in the foreground of the music, his guitars are just an element of the whole. This whole is a nearly perfect mix of music, however, you might have to take it with a pinch of salt. (Luke. J #16)

87. Opeth - Ghost Reveries (9 votes - 1495 points)
Last Year - 47   Highest rating: #8 by Moatillata
PA Top Chart - 58
I never knew Opeth would be one of my favorite bands, but now it is beginning to appear that way. When one finds it, especially if it is present in a genre as pretentious and self-indulgant as prog rock, it must be praised and complimented. So that is what I am doing, I am praising Opeth at great length, here, because I think they have something that most other bands-- of any genre, mnd you --will never even come close to obtaining. (p0mt3 #11)

86. Anglagard - Hybris (9 votes - 1498 points)
Last Year - 66    Highest rating: #7 by rpe9p
PA Top Chart - 16
If you are a fan of all the classic 70s bands, I can almost assure that you will enjoy this album and you should definitely give it a try. It is a beautiful and complex album, with everything you want in a great symphonic prog album. (rpe9p)

85. Yes - Drama (9 votes - 1501 points)
Last Year - 168    Highest rating: #36 by topofsm
PA Top Chart - N/A
All the musicians here make it feel as if the album was a classic Yes album, from the musicianship point of view, while from the compositions and style of the songs are slightly different because of the New Wave influence; this is just another point in which makes Drama so unique and great. (The Quiet One #54)

84. Tool - Aenima (8 votes - 1504 points)
Last Year - 27    Highest rating: #4 by Colonel Claypool
PA Top Chart - 162
It's more like a really really good grunge album. I'd still above all reccomend getting their masterpiece album Lateralus and see what you think of them, though this isn't a bad listen. (topofsm #19)

83. The Doors - The Doors (8 votes - 1529 points)
Last Year - 111    Highest rating: #11 by Chris H
PA Top Chart - N/A
A true psychedelia album, from the first seconds until the ending epic. All in all, you really can't experience this album with words, it is just such a complicated and mysterious work that you need to hear it for yourself. (Chris H)

82. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti (9 votes - 1543 points)
Last Year - 93    Highest rating: #15 by Jozef
PA Top Chart - N/A

81. Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans (8 votes - 1596 points)
Last Year - 118    Highest rating: #15 by npjnpj
PA Top Chart - N/A
Tales From Topographic Oceans is definitely not your typical Symphonic Prog album, however, such brilliance forged into this album, must not be ignored by any means. If you like to go through deep listens again and again to a album, to really get what the band has created, this one is definitely for you. (The Quiet One #22)

80. Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn (9 votes - 1598 points)
Last Year - 126    Highest rating: #32 by Crimson87
PA Top Chart - 228
This piece is truly coming straight out of the depths of Barrett's mind. Lucifer Sam, Bike, The Gnome, and The Scarecrow are so whimsical they come across as comedy but are well backed up with some great riffs and drumming. (Chris H #42)

79. Dream Theater - Awake (8 votes - 1608 points)
Last Year - 81    Highest rating: #7 by Mr. Progfreak
PA Top Chart - 88
In a nutshell this album has all which makes Prog Metal the wonderful genre which it is - if you're into this sort of thing. Of course there are many reasons to dislike it ... outstanding musicianship, crystal clear production, amazing bandwidth of musical styles from soft/acoustic to heavy/thrash, you name it. (Mr. Progfreak/MikeEnRegalia)

78. The Who - Quadrophenia (9 votes - 1611 points)
Last Year - 198    Highest rating: #12 by Kitaman27
PA Top Chart - N/A
It is surely a great concept album which does a great job of telling a story through words and music, with several themes recurring throughout the album. It is surely a masterpiece of rock and prog-related music (rpe9p #37)

77. The Who - Tommy (8 votes - 1613 points)
Last Year - 289   Highest rating: #17 by Crimson87
PA Top Chart - N/A

76. Gentle Giant - In a Glass House (9 votes - 1623 points)
Last Year - 38    Highest rating: #15 by Refugee
PA Top Chart - 29
The album was excellent and innovative, paving the way for Gentle Giant to flourish in their new direction of shorter bursts of melodic energy. It's their first masterpiece and is so because it has great use of instruments (and voice) in addition to making songs that are both innovative and... for lack of a better term... a lot of fun. (Moreitsythanyou #18)

75. Metallica - Master of Puppets (8 votes - 1640 points)
Last Year - 63    Highest rating: #9 by Keppa4v, Mr. Progfreak
PA Top Chart - N/A
I realize this is more or less the bands most "progressive" effort at least prog (metal) related that is. All in all a great album and I found out one of the if not the most favourite for the fans. (progrules #171)

74. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (9 votes - 1648 points)
Last Year - 42    Highest rating: #11 by Movingpictures07, Birdwithteeth11
PA Top Chart - 91
I listened to Deadwing and it really made me appreciate the intense musicianship Porcupine Tree puts into their music. (Chris H #43)

73. Rush - A Farewell to Kings (9 votes - 1659 points)
Last Year - 14     Highest rating: #9 by Birdwithteeth11
PA Top Chart - 21
An absolutely fantastic album that highlights what Rush's 70s period was all about, and probably one of the best albums ever written. (Birdwithteeth11)

72. Camel - The Snow Goose (9 votes - 1671 points)
Last Year - 67    Highest rating: #6 by RaulGuate
PA Top Chart - 33

71. Gong - You (8 votes - 1687 points)
Last Year - 135   Highest rating: #5 by Baldfriede
PA Top Chart - 75
While Flying Teapot might have been the funniest of the three and Angel´s egg the best representation of Daevid Allen´s talent, You is the absolute peak of Gong as a band. Everyone in the band is at their best. (El Bothy #12)

Last year was much more active. Where is everyone's spirit? Let's get excited!

Lots of interesting jumps in this bunch.

70. Emerson Lake and Palmer - Tarkus (9 votes - 1705 points)
Last Year - 174     Highest rating: #8 by ColonelClaypool
PA Top Chart - 126
I know many people are divided over ELP, and I am not a huge fan of the band myself, but I consider Tarkus to be absolutely essential for any prog fan. (rpe9p #38)

69. Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear (9 votes - 1714 points)
Last Year - 46    Highest rating: #10 by p0mt3
PA Top Chart - 42
I happen to think it's essential, but I understand that many people seem to think that Marillion simply ripped-off Genesis. However, I think that is unfair. Give this album a try, as it has some truly epic moments on it. It is as far as I am concerned a hidden gem lost among many unoriginal neo-prog bands. (p0mt3)

68. Radiohead - In Rainbows (9 votes - 1730 points)
Last Year - 102    Highest rating: #6 by Moatilliatta
PA Top Chart - N/A
Simply put, this has all of the catchy hooks, the atmosphere, the emotion and the intelligence that it needs to be one of your new favorites. Forgive Radiohead for making the most enjoyable album of their career. (Moatilliatta)

67. Harmonium - Si On Avait Besoin D'une Cinquieme Saison (8 votes - 1752 points)
Last Year - 58    Highest rating: #9 by El Bothy, Brufordfreak
PA Top Chart - 14
Possibly the most beautiful album ever, at least in my collection. It´s the simplicity of the arregements what makes this album so wonderful and colorful. Every little detail, every note, every instrument makes this album be the masterpiece it is. This is definitly a jewel in any kind of genre, be it prog, rock, folk or whatever...(El Böthy)

66. Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (9 votes - 1767 points)
Last Year - 86   Highest rating: #8 by topofsm
PA Top Chart - 81
This is an essential prog CD. All the pieces of music here are interesting. I would definetely reccomend it to a person getting into Dream Theater, and any general prog fan, even those who don't like metal, because a lot of the CD falls into the rock category. (topofsm)

65. Can - Tago Mago (8 votes - 1775 points)
Last Year - 279    Highest rating: #1 by mosni lamf
PA Top Chart - N/A

64. King Crimson - The Power to Believe (10 votes - 1788 points)
Last Year - 88    Highest rating: #7 by topofsm
PA Top Chart - 226
King Crimson proves that even after decades since their inception they are still capable of creating music that can be called 'progressive'. The Power To Believe eschews standard formulas for prog, this may be one of King Crimson's most unique releases. (topofsm)

63. Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane (9 votes - 1796 points)
Last Year - 61    Highest rating: #5 by p0mt3
PA Top Chart - 55
Once again Pain of Salvation prove that it's the blend of deep emotional connection from the lyrics augmented by powerful, complex and feeling driven music that makes this such a great album in a similar way to its predecessor, The Perfect Element. (sleeper #37)

62. Rush - 2112 (10 votes- 1809 points)
Last Year - 129    Highest rating: #1 by Colonel Claypool
PA Top Chart - 206

61. The Beatles - The Beatles (The White Album) (9 votes - 1821 points)
Last Year - 97   Highest rating: #14 by Crimson87
PA Top Chart - N/A
This album really shows how advanced the Beatles were for their time...it was 1968, noone was doing something like this!!!...really the Beatles were miles ahead of every one...and in many ways still are. (El Böthy #16)

60. Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame (11 votes - 1829 points)
Last Year - 137   Highest rating: #4 by AndersonIII
PA Top Chart - 68
It was the first fusion record I ever heard and I was totally blown away by it. The sheer ferocity, technicality, and overall musicianship blew me away within moments of starting it for the first time and they still do every time I listen to it. (Birdwithteeth11 #21)

59. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (10 votes - 1883 points)
Last Year - 202    Highest rating: #3 by Luke J
PA Top Chart - 211
Prog fans may be eager to get it for the innovation found on Tubular Bells, but they should know what they are getting themselves into. (topofsm #60)

58. Marillion - Misplaced Childhood (10 votes - 1884 points)
Last Year - 65    Highest rating: #14 by ColonelClaypool
PA Top Chart - 43
This is the pinnacle of what made Fish-era Marillion great. Every song on this album flows naturally, none of it feels contrived. A true masterpiece, to be sure. (p0mt3 #22)

57. The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute (11 votes - 1896 points)
Last Year - 94    Highest rating: #2 by Moatilliatta
PA Top Chart - 171
After being mesmerized (and I still am) by De-Loused, I was anxiously awaiting the follow up. While it was difficult enough to render such an album as its predecessor, this one is even more ambitious than the 2003 masterpiece! (Moatilliatta)

56. Radiohead - Kid A (8 votes - 1899 points)
Last Year - 49    Highest rating: #4 by Moreitsythanyou
PA Top Chart - N/A
With Kid A, Radiohead reached the epitome of what it means to be progressive in the 21st century. Deeply moving and artistic, Kid A pushes the boundaries that have held back not just the band, but music in general. (Moreitsythanyou)

55. Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream (10 votes - 1903 points)
Last Year - 54    Highest rating: #7 by ColonelClaypool
PA Top Chart - N/A
Arguably PT's most melodic album, Stupid Dream has no shortage of memorable melodies and possess a great sound throughout. (Moreitsythanyou #28)

54. Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye (9 votes - 1914 points)
Last Year - 98   Highest rating: #1 by keiser willhelm, #3 by sleeper, #5 by moatilliatta
PA Top Chart - 155
Toby Driver has created the musical equivalent of a Jackson Pollack painting. Choirs is truly an adventure. please dont give up before you've had the chance to properly explore the sound scape. Given time this album grows lush and beautiful. (keiser willhelm)

53. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II (11 votes - 1932 points)
Last Year - 107    Highest rating: #7 by Kitaman27
PA Top Chart - N/A
Certified masterpiece in every way. Every guitarist on the planet aspires to play this album, and I am no exception. This is just bursting with unforgettable riffs! (Chris H #14)

52. Focus - Hamburger Concerto (9 votes - 1953 points)
Last Year - 120   Highest rating: #2 by Acelxpro
PA Top Chart - 62
One of the most technically proficient symphonic albums. Full of great melodies and immense musical prowess that is thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. (Moreitsythanyou #105)

51. Premiata Forneria Marconi - Per Un Amico (9 votes - 1974 points)
Last Year - 35     Highest rating: #4 by filkarada

Nice hand!

50. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band (12 votes - 2009 points)
Last Year - 76    Highest rating: #4 by p0mt3
PA Top Chart - N/A
First, it is undeniable that this album blew open the boundaries of what rock music could be unlike any single album ever. It employed new explorations in recording, composition, style and as a piece of progressive history is probably more important than even King Crimson's debut. Without Sergeant Pepper, it is possible that the expansion of the genre into what we call progressive may have never happened. (Negoba #70)

49. Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (10 votes - 2016 points)
Last Year - 20    Highest rating: #3 by npjnpj
PA Top Chart - 53
The talent of Porcupine Tree is in full force on this album and the creative delivery of each song makes me want to keep listening to this album. However, if you're looking for an album to push the boundaries of what you thought music was supposed to sound like and enjoy all forms both melodic and heavy, have no "Fear" in purchasing this well-executed album. 48. The Beatles - Revolver (10 votes - 2019 points)
Last Year - 90    Highest rating: #7 by Negoba, Fritha
PA Top Chart - N/A
This is the album that cracked open the gates to the flood of experimentation that changed what an album could be. Brian Wilson has said that Pet Sounds was an attempt to match this album, and was hailed as a masterpiece of redefining what an album was. (Negoba)

47. Tool - Lateralus (10 votes - 2069 points)
Last Year - 15    Highest rating: #1 by topofsm, p0mt3 #3 by el bothy
PA Top Chart - 60
This album is the definition of creativity. Tool has created a masterpiece, doing things that musicians have never done. There have been bands that have a large dynamic contrast, but few with such soothing atmosphere as Tool. (topofsm)

46. Soft Machine - Third (10 votes - 2109 points)
Last Year - 70    Highest rating: #2 by Crimson87
PA Top Chart - 106
Mind-blow-ing: 1- Producing allucinatory effects.
2- Intensely affecting the mind or emotions
Now , when it comes to this record I think both definitions are suitable. During 75 minutes your mind will be affected by long improvs , sonic exprimentation and supreme mucisianship. (Crimson87)

2 more spots opened in the top 20. Who will fill them?
