Hi guys,

I know it is not full out Prog, more Psych if anything.  But there are many cool keyboard riffs / guitar riffs a la Zeppelin, Deep Purple, 70s style from this band.  Overall, a great vibe.  I am reviewing their new album "Cosmic Egg" and it's worth checking out.  Their first album "Wolfmother" is one of my favorites .

What do you guys think of this band?

I like them. I liked their first album, although it was a bit too long IMO, too many songs. I haven't heard the new one yet, except for a couple of songs wich sounded good, although a bit different, I've heard the only original member still in the band is the singer, is that true?

It is, sadly. I have also, yet to have heard the new album. How is it?

Well the first name that Stockdale was considering was The Deep Zeppelin Sabbath Experience.

Especially because they're more Deep Purple than Zeppelin.

I initially liked the first album, bought it without ever hearing it on a recommendation. It's fun enough. Bigelf does the same thing much better though.

I've looked up a lot of neo-psychedelia/shoegaze/etc. and I've listened to Wolfmother, but I haven't really gotten into them. I prefer early (when they had long songs laden with fuzz and wah pedal) Dead Meadow over any other neo-psychedelic band.

I have a copy of the first album.  I first heard the song "Woman" on some channel playing videos by up-and-coming groups, and I loved the song, probably because of rather than despite its apparent derivativeness.  The rest of the album is more of the same, but it gets a bit numbing after a while.  Haven't given it many repeat spins.

Patton has more creativity in his left buttcheek than Wolfmother will ever have as an entire group. His personality...well...is intense. So was Zappa's.

That subject aside, for those of you who enjoy Wolfmother, check out Bigelf. Everything Wolfmother does, they do better, and add a bit of prog too.

I don't know a lot about Wolfmother,  i have heard odd tracks and they're really good, they sound much better than FNM -  i know what the git   guy means though, it seems sort of Black Sabbath meets Uriah Heep,  and some of the vocals are very reminiscent of early Robert Plant, nothing wrong with that if it's done  well - must check them out some more....Thumbs Up

It doesn't really matter if a band is modern, ahead of it's time, or lost in time and space. It's MUSIC that counts.

And I love Wolfmother a lot. For some reason, they clicked with me. Actually they hit me hard with their musical and lyrical details. I can go that far and say they're one of top 5 musical discoveries for me in last two years, and I believe I had investigated quite a lot of various music in the meantime, both old and new.

They're SINCERE. Just listen to the drummer: it's not about his technical skill or his style - but he puts all of his heart and stamina into the drumming, it's almost childish. How could I dislike such a band?

I just don't understand musicians who talk sh*t about fellow musicians. If the situation were like the Radiohead vs. Miley Cyrus incident, it would be different; because Cyrus isn't a real musician; she's an actress playing a musician, like most modern pop acts.

But Wolfmother is an actual, sincere band that makes real music. Now, whether or not it's to everybody's taste, that's different (I myself find them slightly annoying), but when someone is pouring their heart and soul into their art as I believe the guys in Wolfmother are, it's really lame to mock them.

Just my opinion. Embarrassed

Oh, and not to mention that his comments in that video also implied that anybody who likes Wolfmother is an idiot.

Patton made choices that I admire, choosing to follow a musically adventurous path that really doesn't include any selling out I'm aware of. Wolfmother is a concept group, retro look, retro sound, it's not really about creative expression. But that's okay.

As another (probably more) talented and creative guy seemed to understand despite taking the artistic higher path "It's just entertainment folks."

Patton will be Patton. I'm sure it sticks in his craw that he once blew Chris Cornell off the stage on the tour they shared and now Cornell is a gazillionaire and he's just another talent constantly scrounging to keep going.

I mean, I'm not saying I don't respect Patton as a musician. He's brilliant, but as an aspiring musician myself, I would hate to think that somebody would mock me behind my back simply because they personally don't like my music. It happens all the time, but usually it comes from laypeople who don't have any talent whatsoever, so those comments end up not really amounting to much.

But when someone of the stature and talent of Patton makes comments like that, they hold more weight, and are likewise bound to be more damaging to someone with thinner skin.

I guess I just feel that in the music community, everybody should be supportive of each other, regardless of personal taste, and if you don't like someone's work, be honest about it, but you don't have to go out of your way to insult a whole band including their fanbase. That's just . . . immature. Unhappy

Probably a very naive view for me to have, I know, but it's just logical to me that people in the same biz would want to support each other rather than be so competitive and hateful as people seem to be becoming more and more.

Micah, you are a kind soul. I think musicians in general are more supportive of each other these days than when I was coming up. It was much more gunslinger, lots of rivalry, and the more music you do, you're going to see some of that.

At the same time, I think things have diversified so much, and the industry is a bit more wide open now. I see alot more mutual support now. I think that there's more friendly support as you get into a bit of a more professional atmosphere as well.

You'll be a better rock star than Patton. Big smile

I don't see why Mike Patton should feel any solidarity with Wolfmother. He musically stretches himself almost every day, and they come along with boring retro hard rock and everybody thinks they're great. Just because they're sincere doesn't make it any less lazy to ape Led Zeppelin. Is he obligated to support the efforts of every rock band?

Also, I think that Miley believes in what she is doing. She, specifically, is only popular over somebody else because of marketing, but that doesn't make her any less sincere. And isn't it the artist's intention that matters? I think Britney and anyone else you would care to name would be the same way.

Everybody else seemed to get where I was coming from. Once again, you and I are on completely different wavelengths. I'm not going to bother clarifying my case, because it doesn't need defending. It's just a point of view I have, just like yours is.

I respect your opinion, but I will never, ever believe a pop artist is sincere in their art when they are more concerned with image than music. Wink

Faith No More was at least, 5 years ahead of their time, if not even more when they released their first record in the mid 80.
They did something they had no way of knowing would be accepted or not. At first it was too weird, too strange, too different to too many people and it didn't really take off. Years later, finally people figured them out and of course, by that time the band had gained a reasonable degree of mainstream popularity, meaning of course it was the right time for people who didn't have the testicular fortitude to innovative and do something different like they did to just merely do their own take on FNM's sound and without being good either.
Their band changed the face of music forever and their influence can be heard in countless number of bands.

Mike Patton is a name now synonymous with innovation in music. Never has he been involved in a musical project that hasn't been about pushing the boundaries and bringing something new to the table.

Like it or not, FNM and Mike Patton have and will always have far more cultural significance in music compared to Wolfmother.
And anyone that honestly believes Mike Patton was being totally serious in that video, well, shows how much you know about him. The guy doesn't take himself too seriously and it's reflected in a lot of his lyrics.
I really wouldn't take what he said in the video to heart, because it's plain to see it's not the intention.

And you know what?
Countless numbers of musicians have said a****le-ish things, either intentionally or light heartedly.
Eric Clapton has said some rather dumb and insulting things, Alexi Laiho is known as a guy who bashed on Dream Theater in an interview several years ago and hell, even one of the nicest guys in rock and roll, guitar legend Paul Gilbert has said a****le-ish things, even if never in an interview.
I have no doubt in my mind at some point, the members Wolfmother have said some less than nice things about other people, bands.
Just because it hasn't been captured on video/audio doesn't make them inherently better people.
I know I've said some things that were particularly nasty to other people.
It might have been because I was having an off day, maybe I genuinely meant it or maybe it was because it was a light hearted thing someone took to heart and got upset over it.
It happens folks and I'm sure you'd all be lying if you said to me right now that every single thing that's come out of your mouths has always been nice.

lol! I just noticed your sig! LOL

You a closet Miley fan? TongueWink
While she only really came to my attention with the shockingly overt sexuality of the Party in the USA video, I am fascinated with the phenomenon of Miley Cyrus. On the one hand, she's clearly slowing being used up by the Disney machine, and I don't know if her fame can survive the transition into adulthood. On the other hand, it seems to be what she really wants to do and it seems to really be resonating with a lot of people. I heard one of my coworkers listening to See You Again, and she's an adult with two kids! And yeah, she doesn't write her own songs, but she's 4 years younger than me and she has more drive (and money) than I ever will.

Incidentally, I really admire the way Disney has managed to extract so much money from a demographic with no source of income. Yes, it's evil to manipulate children with marketing to convince them that they need things that don't really don't to ensure the perpetuation of insatiable materialism, but it's also brilliant.

Apologies for going off at a completely fruitless tangent but that has got to be the euphemism of the century. Quite brilliant. Clap

Equality, you are a true jerk. Believing that someone is an idiot for liking a certain band is an act of jerkiness, and a****le-iness. Have a bad life.
