I've been really into This Heat lately, especially the Deceit album (admittedly their most accessible). Their music was really an in between point of (post)punk and prog, which I had previously assumed was an oxymoron. They also had that highly rhythmic proto-industrial thing going on, which I dig. But I'm not specifically looking for dark music per say.

Charles Hayward being mostly responsible for the rhythmic madness, I recently checked out his solo album Survive the Gesture which also has more of a song oriented feel than most This Heat stuff. I like their improv oriented stuff, but as I'm turning into an old man, I'm starting to appreciate... eh, pop songs. Ha.

Also, Camberwell Now (This Heat offshoot in the same uncompromising vein) and Metabolist - a rather obscure but excellent UK band from the late 70's, recalling much of This Heat's experiments.

I just started looking into Camberwell Now, actually right before I posted this thread. Beyond that I haven't heard of any of these suggestions. Thanks!

Checking A Certain Ratio on Myspace now, pretty awesome stuff. Like really densely layered strange funk, I like it! Rip Rig & Panic I am REALLY digging, like a lot. So far so good! The Pop Group is reminding me of PiL a bit, except I like them quite a bit more, they're a bit more diverse it seems. 23 Skidoo as well, exactly the type of music I'm looking for.

Metabolist I'm having trouble finding any audio examples, but I'll keep on it.

Swell Maps is a great example, I'm already familiar with them, but they would be a good comparison. I've heard of Pere Ubu, but never checked them out. I'm liking it! Thanks.

I'm not wild about it, but it's certainly much more interesting than "Don't you want me baby"

Magazine I've been meaning to check out for a while, they actually kind of remind me of a punkier Roxy Music. The rest of the bands I am familiar with and dig. TV on the Radio was a surprise for me, that I ended up liking them. The indie crowd that I normally loathe (the Spin Magazine types) latched onto them hard, so I assumed I wouldn't like it. Shows what my snobby ass knows.

The Human League video reminded me though, certainly not like This Heat, but Duran Duran use to make some music closer to the Krautrock influences of new wave. I was surprised to find, and really like, this performance of "Night Boat" from their first album. It has a pretty menacing/spacey vibe.
