I've been a borderline Dan Swanö fanboy lately, and the two Crimson albums released by Edge of Sanity have been some of my favorites in his massive discography. I love the combination of the brutality of death metal, the melodic riffs, and the dynamic transitions. The first album is a true death metal classic, and is one of my all-time favorite albums. The second album takes a more traditional prog metal approach, filled with lush keyboards, while keeping the same intensity of the first one.

So for all you extreme prog metal fans out there - which one do you like more?

Second, only by a narrow margin though. Although I prefer Purgatory to both. Much more concentrated

And yeah, Dan Swano is a very underrated musician, both in metal and in prog. Great poll Jeff

The first album is my favorite, but not by much at all. The first one is a 5 star album, and the second is a 4.5 for me. Purgatory Afterglow is probably my 3rd favorite EoS album after the two Crimson albums. I've been really liking Unorthodox lately as well.

Out of curiosity, are you into his other stuff? I've really been liking Unicorn and Nightingale lately...

in prog yes he is little known, because edge of sanity started as a death metal band. In metal, EOS are rather popular. They were one of the leading death metal bands durng the heydays of this metal genre.

Edge of Sanity gets some recognition, but the majority of his other projects are largely unknown. Even Edge of Sanity's albums are rarely regarded as "classics", and while they were popular through the 90's, they have almost been forgotten in the metal world lately.

He is easily one of the hardest working, most diverse, and most talented musicians in my opinion.

Cannot beat Mike Patton or Serge Gainsbourg in term of diversity.
Did he play anything different from metal ? I am curious, any ska, jazz, funk, arabic music...?

Unicorn is neo-prog, Nightingale began as goth-rock and evolved into progressive 70's hard rock, Bloodbath is pure death metal, he created some of the first (and finest) progressive death metal with Edge of Sanity, he's experimented with avant garde metal with Pan.Thy.Monium (some of the most unique stuff I've ever heard), and has pushed the boundaries of metal.

No he's not as unique as Mike Patton (never heard the other person), but he is a highly innovative musician in metal and prog.

I iterate what Jeff says in the fact that he's not as popular as you may think. I hang round in metal circles, and even when there is discussion on the most obscure of Death Metal (a la Spawn Of Possession, Vomitory and Brain Drill), Dan Swano does not get a single mention. And EOS were nowhere near the popularity of Death, Morbid Angel and Suffocation so I have no idea where you get that from lucas...

During the Spectral Sorrows era they were one of the leading Swedish metal bands, and that's pretty concrete. Old school Swedish death metal never really became as popular as the bands coming from America, and that's why they aren't as popular as bands like Death. They were one of the leading death metal bands in the early-mid 90's in Sweden, but they didn't have much competition in their country.

They were definitely an important band in the early Swedish death metal scene, and I think Lucas does have a point there. Unfortunately, they never generate much discussion nowadays.

I think that hearing II first as in my case would tend to make II easily win. I can kind of see how if I heard them in order I may have a deeper love for I.

^^ I think that's a pretty good point. I heard Crimson I before I heard Crimson II, and Crimson I is my favorite by a small margin. The first Crimson album was one of the first Swano albums I'd heard along with Moontower, so it is a special album to me.

When I first heard Crimson, I was just getting into death metal. I was just getting into Opeth and Death, and Crimson is one those albums that opened a whole world of music. For one, it introduced me to the world of Dan Swano, and it also sparked my interest in progressive death metal.

I listened to them together (was able to buy both at the same time Big smileBig smile) and I like Crimson 1 better by miles and miles. Don't get me wrong, 2 is a great sequel, but just can't beat the original, pretty much like Operation :Mindcrime 2 can't beat Operation:Mindcrime 1

Yeah, well Operation Mindcrime 2 just sucksTongueLOL

Crimson I is easily in my top 5 albums of all time, so Crimson 2 of course can't beat that. I think 2 is a much easier album to digest for people not into death metal, though.

I'm surprised Crimson 2 is winning so much. I really was expecting the exact opposite...

Mindcrime 2 is pretty disappointing IMO, especially considering the original is one of my all-time favorite heavy metal albums.

Well, could the band possibly deliver something nearly as good as Mindcrime 1 after more then 10 years making bad albums? I don't think so. Although not  being nearly as good,  I don't consider it a bad album.

It's like expecting DT to some day deliver something as good or  better than what they did in the 90's (though  Black Clouds was pretty close IMO), and that is basically why Portnoy refuses to even think about making a metropolis part 3.
