Who's the best Iron Maiden opening act? With the announcement of the upcoming Iron Maiden tour with very special guests, Dream Theater. I started to think about, what opening acts were my favorite to open for the british legends. Up until now, seeing Anthrax support the "Persistence of Time" album in the opening slot for Maiden on the No Prayer for the Dying tour was my favorite. Metallica and Helloween also get a vote. However, now that they announced Dream Theater, I think a new number 1 has emerged. It's not that Dream Theater is necessarily better than those other bands, it's the fact that they are at the prime of their career having released one of their best albums to date in Black Clouds & Silver Lining. What band do you think is the best to open for Iron Maiden? Kiss opened for Maiden on the Monsters of Rock. It was on the Seventh Son tour, the bill also included Megadeth and David Lee Roth. Remember, Kiss was not at a high point at that time, and Maiden was huge. ------------- www.Loudtrax.com |

Does anyone happen to know what year/tour did Metallica open for Iron Maiden? Or was it just a single show they opened? BTW: When I saw Maiden, Dio and Motorhead were the opening bands. It was the Give Me Ed Till I'm Dead (or something similar to that name) tour in 2003. |

When I look at that list of bands, I immediately think Mastodon. But I actually saw them opening for Maiden in 2005 after Leviathan came out, and I didn't enjoy it at all. They had absolutely horrendous sound, and as I didn't know their songs beforehand, it was all just a big mess.

| Not on the list - Motorhead. We saw them play before Maiden in Rome in July 2007, though I would not call them an 'opening act', since it was a mini-festival with six bands involved. Machine Head, who played before Lemmy's crew, were largely unimpressive (as were Trivium when I saw them open for IM in 2006), but Mastodon smoked. |

Yes, he did from 1980 to 1981/82. He joined them around the spring of 1980 (May - June?), before being replaced by Kevin Morris, this one being replaced after the Repression tour by... Nicko. He toured with them in january 1981 in UK and stayed until the end of 1981 or early 1982, if I'm not wrong. Funnily, he was replaced by... Clive Burr who played on Trust's fourth LP (1983). |
