Sorry you are missing this.  This was something special.  One of the best shows I have ever experienced.  The energy was incredible. 5 brilliant musicans at the top of their game.  I can understand about the weekend/weekday  thing though.

     It's been 2+ days since the show I went to.  Still haven't come down.  The band really connected with the audience.  When Neil sang the "Rock the house" portion of Whirlwind, the entire audience stood up and yelled in unison and Neil had a surprised, kind of taken back look on his face.  He repeated "Rock the house" to an even louder yell.  He then admitted to having forgotten the lyrics.  He did one final "Rock the house" before continuing.  It was a magical moment among many. 

I will surely enjoy it !

I felt the same way.  Pure prog bliss.

 

I have read some posts about the "religious" lyrics turning people off.  All I have to say is from a purely musical standpoint,  If people dismiss THIS group strickly because of the lyrics, I feel sorry for them.

 

The musicianship was absolutely spot on.  Truly remarkable. 

 

Pull out your "Whirlwind" cd and listen to the following tracks:

11.  Is It Really Happening?  (about four minutes in to the end)

 

For you musicians out there pay particular attention to the time signatures at around 7 minutes (6:50) in on track 11.  IT SOUNDED BETTER THAN THE ALBUM IN CONCERT.  They were THAT good!

 

I don't know what the reaction was like in Montreal, but in SF, everyone was on their feet with an ovation at the end of that part, (and several others BTW).

 

I have a favor to ask of people who still have the concert to go to:

 

 When Neil sings, "Look at the person Who is standing to your right" in "Set us free", everyone in the audience should stand up and look to their right!  (Random thought, sorry.)

the concert was always very very good... more than 3 hours of music, and the setist i guess it's always the same, with the entire whirlwind album and songs from the other 2 ones.

i was very tired, but tried to sleep only during the breaks between the sets. the show was very entertaining indeed... i hate dream theater's latest albums and the portnoy/petrucci production, but the drummer is really a great thing to see playing.

maybe you have already checked out blabbermouth.

what happened towards the end of the show was that neal morse ran to portnoy's drumset, and substituted him. and i thought, what the f**k! morse plays guitars, keyboards... and DRUMS TOO!!!

in the meanwhile portnoy jumped over the crowd for a stage surfing session.

and when he came back to the stage, with morse still playing drums as hell, he embraced trewavas' bass guitar and there he started singing the 'heaven and hell' song as a tribute to the recently passed away RJ Dio. they also played a bit of 'holy diver' with gildenlow on lead vocals, before going back to the "standard configuration".

after the show we waited for the musicians who conceded some fast signing and photo session... a great night overall!

 

Hope you don't live to regret it!!!! A Transatlantic tour is rare and unmissable!

Hmm I saw TFK and they bored me to tears too.  TA most certainly did not.  So much more energy and power in the music and performance.  I don't know the band you saw but based on your description would not have interested me at all.  I  absolutely detest punk.   But if you enjoyed it then it is all good. 

However if it is so good then why don't you write your review in it's own thread and not try to make a comparison inside a review thread of another band? 

 

Agreed! I wouldn't have enjoyed Nomeansno given that description. Sounds like a mess to me! Makes me wonder why he even bothered replying to the thread if he dosn't like TA!!!!

I never said that I don't like TA (i have their first two albums and the live in america since around three years, if I didn't like their music I would have sold them, don't you think ?). But sometimes you want to see and listen to something different than your usual prog (the week before Nomeansno, I went to see Bahaa Ronda and Chabaa Al Andalous, they played fantastic arabo-andalousian music).

 

And why do you call me "he" my first name is my nickname ? That's a lack of respect for the poster.

 

My comments on the TFK being boring was they sounded too samey to me through the set.  (It was in 2005 at Calprog) There were not a lot of dynamic changes I would hope from their music. I did not find the same energy as I did with TA. I will say the show had run on long that day and TFK did not get done until 1230 AM so maybe I was tired as well.  I agree Roine is a great guitar player and have enjoyed him with both TA and The Power of Two shows last year. I can also attest that Roine had a lot more fun with the TA and Po2 shows than he did with that TFK show.  He was far more approachable and animated than the TFK show. I am not trying to put anyone's favorite band down they are all accomplished musicians.  and you lucky b*****d getting a second encore song.   

I saw the videos of that but didn't sound good.  My thought is they recorded this as like a bonus song that no one else heard on the inevitable live DVD/CD.  I will just have to settle for sitting in the front row of the first show of the tour. 

One more thing about TFK  I have never seen Dream Theater and have no desire too but have loved both shows I have seen Mike Portnoy with TA and LTE so it isn't just Roine.  (I would however like to see Neal with Spock's Beard.) My thought is these guys are all accomplished musicians.  Seeing Nick DiVirgilo play with the Power of Two sets with very little rehearsal time with the group these guys are all pros.  I just happen to relate to some of the music differently than others.

Faultless playing Amazing expereince I will never forget that night..Transatlantic are the only band of the last 20 years I have truly enjoyed in a concert performance..

I was there!!! There's not many 'major' prog bands I havn't seen over the years including the big 5, but apart from YES on the Union tour, Transatlantic 'Blew Them All Away'!!!

 

The musicianship was superb, the sound was perfect and the reception from a very healthy crowd was great too.  With this being the last night of the tour the band had a bit of fun too.  At one point we had Morse on drums, Trewavas on keys and Portnoy on bass, and Morse seems a damn good drummer too.  Even Gildenlow had a go on the drumstool!!

 

And the little excursion into an excerpt of Deep Purple's Highway Star was a great laugh too.  The band seemed bowled over and so were the crowd.  A truly great gig and I'm struggling to think of one that tops this (and I've been a seasoned gog-goer for 30 plus years).

 

I just hope they return sometime soon.  Until then, we'll have to wait for the DVD from the London gig.

 

Nov, glad you had a great time, will you be getting to the High Voltage festival in July?  I'm afraid I can't make that one.

Still that show on saturday was as you say something else..

Best prog band I have ever seen..How could Any band Top A 77 minute song that had everything in it..

 

As you say the DVD will have to do for a while..Fingers crossed they get vback together for another superb offering..

Any band whose music you didn't know very well would be hard pushed to entertain you when you were already tired after many hours of music.

 

I went to Calprog in 2009 (Izz, Echolyn, Sylvan, etc) and hardly knew a note played all day. I'd hesitate from calling a band boring just because I didn't know their music though

 

 

Anyway, what I'm trying to say here is - THE FLOWER KINGS AREN'T BORING!!

 

They've released many studio albums with more variety on them than almost any other band I can think of so please don't let that Calprog show put you off

I can't make that gig either as we're away that weekend.

 

Having said that, if I'm totally honest, I doubt if I would have gone anyway. They'll be too much other stuff to endure that day (bands and people ) to wait for a short Transatlantic set. I feel a bit guilty as it'd be good to show support for the band.

 

I hope it's a great success for them of course - I wonder what they'll play? The whole of The Whirlwind could be a bit of a risk don't you think?

I don't know how long their set is, but if they get 2 hours (as headliners) I'd perhaps go with The Whirlwind Nov.  That was just sooooo good live.  They could then manage a couple of their shorter () epics too. Whatever they choose I'm sure it will be great.

 

Lets just hope there's a new album to follow fairly soon, or one from TFK would do nicely .

I didn't say I wasn't familiar with their music. Where did you get that from what I said? 

I thought the songs they choose were way too much alike everyone being at least 15 minutes or more except for their cover of Soon. There were no dynamics in the set no highs and lows no variation. They all followed the same formula.  After about an hour an a half I was ready for them to tie it up.  I don't know why but it just doesn't grab me. 

Now the Karmakanic/ Agents of Mercy stuff was far better in part I think do to Lalle Lawson on Keyboards and Nick DiVirgillo on drums and the compositions vary.   I had only heard AoM once and Boss in the Factory twice before the show so I was not that familiar with the material but I loved that stuff.   

I didn't care for Sylvan that day either for almost the exact same reasons as listed above.  IZZ and Echolyn were on fire though and Presto Ballet was pretty good even though they didn't have their keyboard. player.

I have been to every Calprog since 2005 so i don't need to be instructed on listening without being familiar with the music.  I try and sample every group to get an idea of their sound before the festival.   Even if I don't know every song by heart I still feel I have an indication of what they are presenting.  I was more intimate with The Flower Kings than most of the bands I have seen. 

Here is the list of band s I liked and other that were meh and the ones I don't want to see again. (Remember it is all based on taste. I am not getting personal.  Frankly even some of the bands i don't care to see the members of were very cool.)
