Animals as Leaders is an instrumental album by a Meshuggah influenced guitar whiz named Tosin Obasi. I just discovered this band and this guitarist and the style (Djent) over the last few days. As a guitar player I am blown away to some extent, and these musicians are pushing music into new territory which is always good. I haven't had an album make me want to run to my guitar like this in awhile. Experience? Impressions?

Found out about it last year, but didn't actually investigate it until this year. Fine stuff indeed. Had no idea it was a one man band til I read the bio here, which makes it quite the more impressive. Well the 'core part may be in the vocals, yet they add some clean vox too. they're debut album is just mind blowing. upon first listen i literally needed a new pair of underwear because I sh*t MYSELF. looking forward to seeing them on the 23rd. it's a shame it's circa survive headlining that show. not really into them at all. another decent band playing that show as well is DREDG. -------------

Circa Survive are fairly decent if you ask me. Truth be told, I would rather listen to them than AAL. More soul involved... anyway, Dredg is not that far removed from Circa Survive if you ask me. They are both sort of indie, semi-proggy bands with singers who have really high, clean, beautiful vocals... lots of focus on ambient guitar parts too... but I suppose some people like red apples instead of green ones. for some reason though dredg's vocals appeal to me mroe than circa survives. of course i'm one of those people who aren't a fan of coheed and circa survive's vocals are too much like coheeds imho. -------------

Animals as Leaders is considered Djent Progressive (Those who don't know what Djent is, it's that sound that a guitar does in Groove metal (Meshuggah started the whole concept). But anyway the whole Djent thing is really starting to pop up everywhere. |

Yeah and look at your avatar. What's interesting is I was listening to "Thoroughly at Home" while I read this thread. I just happened to find it. Tosin is a very amazing player. I'd like to see him go up against Petrucci haha. Abasi would win if it was just Him and Petrucci, but if JP had Myung and Portnoy behind him... Tosin would still win. I cant wait for there next album. Tosin Abasi will go down in the history books. Well... he would if the people who wrote them stepped out of there safe little never-leaving-the-key-or-4-4-time-signature-and-no-guitar-music. /Rant. |

Saw them at a BtBaM show about a year (?) ago. They blew me away. Was not expecting anything that amazing out of any of the bands opening for BtBaM. The rest of the bands sucked. I love BtBaM but AaL kinda upstaged them. |

Hmmm, well I would have to admit that I am a pretty big Dream Theater fan. There is something to be said about making the number of albums that Dream Theater has and still have excellent stuff all the way through the dicography. Is there stuff in DT's discs that I don't like, sure but there is ALOT more that I really like. Not to take anything away from AAL but they are new. They need to make more albums there are relatively close in quality before I can start talking about them being better than DT. Besides, DT is more thrash inspired Progressive Metal where AAL is a completely different style. I would put them in a different genre almost. ------------- http://www.last.fm/user/dtd350 |

I like TRAM, but Tosin doesn't do as much amazing technical stuff in it as in AAL.
