First of all, yes, I know this is the wrong section, but in the Shred we couldn't figure out where it properly ought to go.  Someone will need to move this thread.

The metal band Diablo Swing Orchestra has a lot of interesting jazz influences, and on MMA is listed as avant-metal, but here on the archives they are listed as tech/extreme metal.  Anyone who has heard them knows that is miles from accurate; they really are neither technical nor extreme in the slightest (except for extremely awesome of course!).  I can appreciate that they are hard to classify into the genres on this website, and that they are not really similar to other progressive metal bands, but it seems to me that they must be moved into the Progressive Metal category; tech/extreme is just way too far from suitable.

Thank you.

I will get the rest of the PMT to read this, and we can move them if neccessary.

I think Prog Metal is about right.

I also had something here (that I hastily edited out) about them potentially fitting into RIO/Avant, although that would likely irk more people then putting them in prog metal would.  At least one person agrees with me that Avant is at least a possible genre sorting for them, due to their "crazy genre mixing", but prog metal is a little more suitable.

Prog Metal would suit them great, but I could see them in RIO/Avant. Either way, the most important thing is that I don't think Extreme/Tech is very accurate at all.

Nah, they are too metal for RIO/Avant.

I totally oppose moving them out of metal as a whole genre. Now, among metal subgenres, tech/extreme might be the wrong one. I think experimental or progressive work better.

After reading the definitions, Avant-Garde Prog Metal is a sub category of Tech/Extreme, but I'm far from an expert on prog metal to know the best place for them. It is just initially a shock to see them in that genre. LOL

But it says something under Experimental about "less technical"

Furthermore, there is "eclectic metal" under Extreme/post, and I'm sort of thinking that's a fairly fitting description too

I would definitely say eclectic, simply because of the way they jump between musical styles.

They won't be going under eclectic, given that eclectic does not usually include metal bands. The three groups of metal here cover almost all types of metal, irrespective of actually how 'typically metallic' the music is. The PMT will decide on a shift to either Experimental/Post Metal or Prog Metal soon. Again, these sub-groups are only loose definitions, and there will always be an element of crossover between them. When we have shifted them, I will update this thread.

You also must remember that each member's perception of the band is relative to their experience of it. Thus, someone who has never heard metal before may consider them extreme, but clearly to an experienced listener, they are not. We just try and find the most appropriate fit. Much of the excessive genre bending that occurs in metal is hollow and shallow, the PMT does not want to have to split each band into increasingly obscure sub-genres. That would be pointless.

I think this is what he refers to, ACYL.  If that's the case, Experiment/Post is where zappaholic thinks it belongs

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=3179 - Changed.

The PMT saw Prog Metal as the best compromise. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I'd say Experimental/Post metal. They arent exactly extreme, or much technical.

I missed that they were moved, cant help thinking that they're still in the wrong genre, as Experimental seems to be the perfect fit for them IMO.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is in avant-progressive, and it's more metal than DSO.

But it's also much more avant

How about expanding the name to Tech/Extreme/Avant? It makes sense to keep those together, because there are many bands who exhibit various combinations of the three traits, and they obviously go well together.
