Nah, I won't think of best if not for favorite:

Camel's is marvellous
Marillion's is very powerful vocal/lyric-wise
Floyd's a classic of psych, and lately I've been enjoying much more than I used to
Santana's debut is really unique
Mahavishnu's debut is stunning
Cobham's is one of my favorite jazz rock albums

I could go on, I've always been very fond of debut albums, they show lots of aspects from the band/artist that they would later wouldn't show.

I'm with Walter on this one. It's always been my most played of Gabriels albums.

I'm probably out on a wing here, but I always really loved the Atomic Rooster debut album. Sadly the line up only lasted about 2 weeks after it's release.

Also, Isn't it a damn shame that Trespass wasn't the Genesis debut, I could certainly live without Genesis To Revelation. LOL

Nice suggestion. Something like my fourth favorite.

One of these three on top:
Magma Kobaïa
Univers Zero 1313
Art Zoyd Symphonie pour le jour où brûleront les cités

Debuts are great! Weather Report, Return To Forever, Pink Floyd, ELO, Amon Düül II, Kraftwerk, Residents, Can, Eskaton, Black Sabbath, PFM, BMS, Gentle Giant...

Only counting bands with actual careers (=more the three albums).

Glad to see someone else agrees with me!  It really is quite an accomplishment, considering how difficult it was to be an American prog rock band in rural Kansas, especially in 1974!

I don't know so many debuts, but from the ones I know I like ItCotCK very much indeed (despite the Moonchild long solo). Even though Pink Floyd is perhaps my favourite band, I just don't really like Piper very much. Hybris is a really cool album too. And I may add Triana's "El Patio", which I really love.

It's very original.  I've heard some people call them Porcupine Tree-ripoffs, but I frankly don't see any comparison.  In my humble opinion, they're much more creative than Wilson.

By the way, the US release has one of their two best songs on it ("Arrival / The Intention Craft").  The UK release has the other one ("The Twyncyn / Trembling Willows").  The other differences are relatively inconsequential.  I'd suggest buying the US release, but if you get REALLY into the band like I did, you may want to go ahead and get the other one too.

Just a suggestion.

This year I've been enjoying the new debut album by Mars Hollow.

Nice exhaustive list in general, but for the sake of nitpicking, the ones I've highlighted aren't debuts. Only one I can think of to add would be Quella Vecchia Locanda's first.

Thumbs Up Quella Vecchia Locanda indeed. Excellent ! Grazie

According to the lads themselves "Trespass" is the first true GENESIS album w/o Jonathan King´s lush orchestrations they didn´t like. King says he accepted no arguments about. Production and the end result of "From Genesis to Revelation" is King´s fantasy, not the boys´. He was the boss.

Newborn Alphataurus & GENESIS REVISITED are the best ever happened in today´s prog and thus so special to be mentioned here. I know ´cos been there. GENESIS REVISITED EXTENDED LIVE is the best ever concert I have witnessed in the 2000´s. 3 hours of the classic (best) GENESIS music performed flawlessly by true enthusiasts & professional musicians & GENESIS music lovers and conducted by Maestro Steve Hackett himself. Me and my buddy closed our eyes and found ourselves shouting Knife ! And Nad Sylvan nailed the perfect illusion being in a GENESIS gig in the 70´s. Period.

Mostly Autumn    For All We Shared  is a great album, let down by poor production.  Their first two albums are crying out for a decent  remaster.  (maybe a job for a certain Mr. Wilson)

Whenever these threads pop up I instantly think of NEU!'s selftitled debut. Never fails. Maybe it is because they never bettered it - and that is saying something as they made some astonishingly brilliant records both under the NEU moniker but also as solo artists (L.A. Düsseldorf springs to mind).

In my best album list from the beginning of the year, the best prog debut (as in "listed on PA") is "Herd of Instinct" by .O.rang by a stunning distance. This is a supercool album indeed but most of you will not know it (it's a Talk Talk spin-off).

The best well known one is Tubular Bells (ranked 113 - I don't seem to appreciate many debuts).

Sock it up matey!
Henri Veal will never ever sneak his way down your missus' trouser department. The keys don't fit.
Speaking of which, too few keys out there to muster up a real crowd.

I only got Herd of Instinct quite recently, which is odd given I've been a big fan of the late Talk Talk albums since they came out. It is indeed a very groovy platter!

Probably In the Court of the Crimson King. It's not only King Crimson's first album, it's also arguably their best work.

^^^ A fine choice!

If it counts as prog, This Heat, which is just my favorite album anyway.

Yes, it's an absolute masterpiece, so much innovation in their work.

Also, Henry Cow's Legend is quite legendary too!  Clap

Almost all debuts in prog are not all that. It's like they are still searching for a sound. Most of the times the musicians aren't that good, and it will take a few line-up changes to really get a good team. So most of the times the 2nd, 3rd or 4th album is much better than the debut.

That being said, the following debuts were very promising and I hold very dearly:

Saga - Saga was really stellar, great songwriting, topnotch musicianship but a very clean and sterile production
Queen - Queen I is messy and has a terrible production but is very charming.
Uriah Heep - ... Very Eavy Very Umble is a weird album but is also very charming
Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant, one of the best debuts I can think of.
Camel - Camel  not a favorite of many, and some songs can be boring, but I think it has something special, something naive.

This. I NEEEED THIS ALBUM! I don't care who remasters it, JUST DO IT!

I'd like to nominate Spock's Beard's debut, The Light. While not perfect (The Water's FU), it's one of the few times where a band got it right from the word go (King Crimson is another example). There's not many other bands where track 1 of their debut album is regarded as one of their best works, even after 20 years and many further albums.

It's interesting how many of what we may call prog legends had debut albums that we tend to brush over. Yes (self-titled), Genesis (From Genesis to Revelation), Dream Theater (When Dream and Day Unite), etc.

There are many great ones...
Yezda Urfa
National Health
Hatfield and the North
ELP
Caravan
King Crimson

And a whole bunch of "one hit wonders" like Bubu, Bacamarte, Semiramis etc.

Edit: Bacamarte made two records, but the first is the best anyway...and Bubu is recording their second LP right now.
