i am a big fan, and have been for a very long time i feel that Death Walks Behind You is their very best, and that their best song is the title track from that album i love all their other music, except that i am a little luke-warm about Headline News, oh well, nobody is perfect co-incidentally, in the late 1980s, i think it was 1989, while in downtown Ottawa, Canada, i saw Rooster guitarist Steve Bolton, i was in a hurry to get somewhere, and so did he, by the looks of it, so i did not introduce myself, but it is something i will always remember, though -in Ottawa! |

My favorite was always their first album. The UK release, WITHOUT the guitarist. It really bothers me that they overdubbed a guitar track for the US release. I always liked the trio lineup of Carl Palmer, Vincent Crane, and Nick Graham the most. Theres so many wonderful songs on that album, especially Winter, Decline and Fall, and Broken Wings. I never really got into what the band went onto after that though..... ------------- Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell? I really like Death Walks Behind You and the debut, so yes, I can call myself a fan.
Nice n' Greasy and Made in England are pretty solid funk/soul rock albums too. Never quite got into In Hearing Of.
My favorite tune by them is most certainly the jaw-dropping instrumental, VUG, simply love the riffs and solos from it, Vincent Crane was a monster of the B3 Hammond-Organ.

Their self-titled is my favorite. Although you gotta love the phallic cover for Nice and Greasy.

i also really, really like Rooster splinter group Hard Stuff, which featured John Cann and Paul Hammond for two albums "Bulletproof" and "Bolex Dementia", also with bassist-vocalist Johnny Gustafson, from Quatermass they are woefully under-rated, and "Bulletproof" is one of the best guitar based power trio albums of all time-it is really something-the second album is good but not quite like the first |

Atomic rooster is one helluva band
In Hearing Of is definitely the proggiest of their albums and definitely my fave.
I also like the debut, but Death walks Behind You was originally my fave as a teen, but nowadays is probably my least liked., tied with Nice 'n Greasy
I don't understand why people call these two albums funk/soul......
Made In England is pure hard prog rock :

Stand By Me Introduction/Breathless People You Can't Trust All In Satan's Name and the two bonus tracks
Goodbye Planet Earth Satan's Wheel are rock, nothing to do with soul/funk in spite of Farlowe's excellent soulish vocals. The following Nice'n Greasy is however not quite as outstanding as MIE. ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

OK some love being poured out for Atomic Rooster - thanks everyone. I saw all the 70s albums at a bargain store and bought the lot on CD. Then I was systematically reviewing everything they did but stopped at the 1980 reunion when they recorded the "Atomic Rooster 80" album. Was that any good? I didnt get the album after that either - any good? How does it compare to the first 4 albums that are classic IMHO....? -------------

Atomic Rooster 80, and also the subsequent music on the two EPs recorded in 1981 and 1982, are all under-rated, and reall rock your socks off this is Rooster with John du Cann, and the best records of theirs always featured him the fans did not turn out in droves for this music,but they should have the subsequent 1983 album Headline News is ok, but a bit weak compared to the previous early 80's material |

Atomic Rooster 80 and the EPs Play It Again (1981) and End Of The Day (1982) sound like Death Walks Behind You period Rooster with a bit of In Hearing Of thrown in for good measure-the EP End Of The Day even featured Paul Hammond along with du Cann and Crane on some songs 1983's Headline News is a different story-du Cann is absent, and it shows, though the band recruited Dave Gilmore from Pink Floyd as session guitarist, the album sounds watered down, and the least Rooster sounding album they ever did-it sounds like 1983, i am sorry to say-more poppish and almost new wave in places |

I would stop at the first five albums if I was you It simply doesn't have the same magic.... I can't even call them good either....

I just heard the BEST OF AR Cd today and it really amazed me how good these songs sound after a long break from hearing them. Vug is amazing and Black Snake, the bluesiness of it and that Vincent Crane Hammond - wow! Just a fantastic band. -------------

Vincent Crane is one of my very favorite keyboard players, so naturally I like the band, although I have only heard Death Walks Behind You and a compilation called "The Devil Hits Back." I can't really figure out what the deal with that compilation is, either. It appears to be re-recordings of their older songs, with James Du Cannon vocals, but the liner notes are pretty unclear. I can't understand why they would rerecord such a lrge chunk of their catalogue and release it as a compilation. -------------
