I was really hoping that this album would grow on me over time, especially after seeing the band perform some of the tracks live. Instead I just grew tired of this material. From worst to best: The Shattered Fortress A Rite of Passage The Count of Tuscany A

Agree.....but this seems to be one of those albums where regardless of whether you like the album or not, the individual preferences for each song seems to differ so much among us DT fans.
I like the album very much and I have to say here is my list:
Wither
A Rite of Passage
The Shattered Fortress
The Best of Times
The Count of Tuscany
A Nightmare to Remember
(the last two can flip flop daily....)
Say what you will about the lyrics, content or meaning of The Count of Tuscany...that's just a brutal song...I swear one day I will blow my car speakers and fry my amp listening to that song driving one day.

If I had speakers in my car, I would do the same with The Count, eventhough is one of my least favorites. It is still a great song. And I read the full story about the song, Petrucci explained it very well, how he, John Myung and some people of the crew travel with on of the producers of Italy to this strange castle where they make winne. Everything was bizarre and there were stories about the owner and everything. I think the lyrics could have a better treatment, but it's OK... ------------- |

See...I take lyrics when I know the writer is doing it from some sort of personal experience, as kind of the gospel...in other words since I was not there, how do I know it could have been better?? I don't...now maybe I would have liked the story told differently....but to me the context is perfect, I mean its a story and stories are meant to be interpreted differently. I would much prefer to have a song I need to listen to over and over and over x 100, before I begin to get it, rather than say ok got it....after 2 listens.
That to me is boring...IMO

I hate that album... I remember A Rite Of Passage being the least vile of the bunch. For the record, Count Of Tuscany is still the worst and most cheesy DT song I've ever heard. |

! No chance! Wither is a great ballad! Best of times is worst track, because its too little content stretched over way too much time Count of Tuscany doesn't get boring. Nightmare has it's imperfections. Wither is the weakest. It's still a very good song, but all of the other ones are fantastic IMO.

The Shattered Fortress is at least a decent closer to the AA Suite, despite it's lack of new material. A Nightmare to Remember is somewhat ok, standard DT. Wither is a listenable but generic ballad. The Best of Times is completely insignificant and uninteresting. The count of Tuscany is three minutes of great intro followed by seventeen minutes of tripe. But A Rite of Passage is the worst DT song I've ever heard. -------------  |

Lyrics like ' I , I don't wanna die !! Suddenly I'm frightened for my life' sound like b-rated gothic metal lyrics at best. Too much full-fat cheese on that track really, the whole conceptual theme spoiled all the nice melodies in it. Come on John Petrucci, you can do better, you are the one that wrote all the great lyrics like in Take The Time or Scarred, when you were just 26-27. No more cheese in the next DT pls!! |
