Octavarium bores me and A Change of Seasons is my favorite Dream Theater song. What to vote...

WAY TOO EASY MAN!

Octavarium is well played and well composed, but way too perfectly arranged that it seems way too structured for me.

A Change of Seasons, on the other hand, is a real Prog Metal epic. It has its flaws, especially the bad-sound drums, but the composition is excellent and Petrucci's guitar stuff is really good.

Octavarium sounds more like symphonic prog than prog metal... I think that may be why I prefer it to ACOS.

Don't you think they're a bit low in the mix? They don't sound 'rockin'. I didn't mean that Portnoy's playing was bad.

Don't consider Octavarium to be that great....Parts of it are brilliant though.

Seasons is awesome and gets my vote.

ACOS, primarily because I prefer the melodies.

ACOS is pretty choppy but overall not too bad. Octavarium is one of the few Dream Theater songs I find myself really wanting to listen to these days, so it clearly takes my vote. To me, for whatever reason, ACOS feels pretty pompous and overblown while 8v feels light-hearted and fun.

Again Pablo ir right, the drums are not well mixed, but that song stand tall anyway. Octavarium is a great piece of perfection, but I prefer the ol' vibe of ACOS. that's it...

Octavarium easily. My favourite DT song overall. Each part of the song is perfect. Some parts of ACOS annoy me a bit, but it's a great song nontheless.

A change of seasons might just be DT greatest masterpiece!

Octavarium is definitely one of the greatest songs but when I heard a change of seasons on the live album "Once in a Livetime" it made this poll easy for me.

Tough one. I love both songs equally, but I voted for Change of Seasons, because it's intro is more interesting that 8VM's. I often find myself skipping the Continuum solo on 8VM.

The Octavarium intro is actually one of my favourites of all time, but oh well. LOL

That particular part feels like a filler to me. It's just Jordan showing his skills in another two freaky gadgets. But sometimes it worth when you are relaxed and helps to dive into a nice atmosphere... both songs are perfect, but ACOS is more DT, more, something...

Octavarium by far.
A Change of Seasons is one of the worst DT albums, IMO. I DESPISE medleys.

If I focus on the songs instead of the albums, Octavarium is still better than ACOS.

That's why I think certain threads should be opened up again, so you can read about what these folks thought about. It really gives you a different perspective on PA, since I started lurking here around 2007-08 everyone that I would chat with is what 12yrs older now...And even back then some of the commentary was pretty forward thinking.
I mean I vividly remember discussing Porcupine Tree and their effect on the progressive rock world, as well bands like Riverside, Spocks Beard and heck even Steven Wilson had not yet released his first solo album yet.

I regularly go back in time on threads and read stuff....its pretty cool.

I kinda agree ^ Octarvarium honestly takes like 12 minutes to really get going. None of its bad, but I don't think its the holy grail of Dream Theater songs.

Actually I'm no great fan of either. Octarvarium is too bloated and a departure from Dream Theater being a metal band, while I think Dream Theater did better things than Change Of Seasons on the Falling Into Infinity album, such as songs like Hollow Years and Peruvian Years.

^*Peruvian Skies

Coincidentally, I listened to Octavarium today. And funny enough, I just noticed that intro is VERY PF. However, the comparison ends after that intro. The rest is kind of just symphy metal, with a typical complicated DT instrumental part in the middle. Most of it kind of has a Genesis/Queen vibe to me.

Yeah. Peruvian Skies is very PF as well. That was the sort of stuff Dream Theater was doing at the time. I don't mind the PF touch. I just don't like it when as in Octavarium the songs go on for too long. Dream Theater has a habit of doing that. However the last couple of albums (including The Astonishing) the songs are much shorter and there's more to take in.

Octavarium, although for some reason my vote didn't register.

ACOS has never worked that well for me.

Metropolis pt 1, The Best Of Times, The Count Of Tuscany, Six Degrees, and Octavarium are all classic epics from DT for me😎
