Thats not fair. You have In The Hot Seat there and that is their worst album.

no vote on principle.

I reckon In The Hot Seat is better than Love Beach (sorry Ian) but anyway, Trilogy is my favourite ELP album.

You really should have included Pictures - even though it's live there was no studio version at the time of release (I'm not counting the version on In The Hot Seat either).

Any of the first 3. (Not that black moon is really better than love beach, IMO).
Trilogy was my first touch of EL&P so I go for it

I've often wondered!

Since High Voltage I've been on an ELP binge. I've listened to Love Beach and Hot Seat - apart from Canario I didn't think much of Love Beach, but Hot Seat wasn't too bad. The production is better and the songs generally stronger. Of course that's just my opinion. Wink

Brain Salad Surgery, because:

2. Great opener Jerusalem, great suite Karn Evil.
3. Definitely the best cover art of all ELP albums.

Woah, the masses are stirred! I knew i would get some flack but really people, settle, cool your jets and relax, its only a dang poll... .

Love Beach is nowhere near as good as In the Hot Seat which is also the pits but its a notch above the abyss that LoVe Bitch is. I guess it doesnt matter as both are not going to trouble the polls here. or are they.....

Voted Brain Salad Surgery as its my favourite album by anyone not just ELP.

Love Beach is much better than In The Hot Seat. They were virtually cripples when they recorded ITHS , Emerson and Palmer both recovering from operations and nowhere near their best. Love Beach is just very cheesey ,not the most terrible crime that can be committed against music in my book.

The votes are what I would have hoped for with a stready increase through the first 4 albums culminating in their master work.
They fell off a cliff after that. I don't think any other band suffered such a sharp decline as ELP. Sad.

I've never heard the infamous Love Beach. My curiosity is almost getting the better of me. I'm going to have to buy that..I mean..how bad can it be?..

The ELP album that gives me most listening plasure from start to finish is the debut album. Beyond that I like Tarkus, Trilogy and BSS. Hell, I even like Black Moon and ELPowell, in places, but generally find their albums a little patchy.

I vote for the debut!

I wouldn't say it's genuinely awful (though plenty obviously would!)LOL It's probably the title and ridiculous cover photo that sealed it's reputation. I actually like the title track, Canario and a lot of the second side which has some great playing on it.

The real low point is probably Taste of My Love. If you can get through the lyrics of that without laughing incredulously you're a better man than I!

Oh, I vote BSS by the way.

I'm not too sure about the irony - Greg Lake's big cheesy grin and chest hair doesn't seem overly ironic to me. I remember one review said it looked like they'd washed up on a desert island looking for a Bee Gees fancy dress party!

Not ironic.

Keith Emerson fought Atlantic over that cover. They all hated it.
As for the music. A tired burnt out ELP on the tail of a huge tour which was financially a disaster forced to make an album by the record company. They hated where they were and Greg and Carl scarpered  leaving Keith to finish the album and promote it.

Edit.

Atlantic also wanted some hit singles, hence the "poppy" nature.

Blacksword, I think the album scraped into the UK Top 40 for a week or two but way below where the previous original studio albums had charted.

Not really. Given time apart they could have made a very nice album ( there was talk of getting back to basics I believe, but I may be thinking of another time).as it was this album finished the band.

And after that - buy Keith's more recent album with Marc Bonilla.

Why is "Love Beach" better than "In the hot seat"? The answer is simple: "In the hot seat" doesn't have an epic, "Love Beach" does. Unless, of course, you'd count the bonus track in the form of a studio recording of "Pictures at an exhibition".

The first five ELP albums represent for me the band's fertile creative peak which culminated in the uber stupendous Brain Salad Surgery (which earned my vote, natch)

Thereafter the trio admittedly went steadily downhill but the descent had one or two refuelling stops in the shape of Emerson's excellent Piano Concerto #1, Side 4 of Works Vol 1, Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman
from (whisper) Love Beach and Black Moon (which I liked hugely)

Love Beach does at least sound like ELP in places. In the Hot Seat was just plain dreadfull as you say and virtually unrecognisable from the band that in its heyday took prog rock by the scuff.Emerson was barely able to play properly having just undergone an operation while the record company (Victory Music) on the verge of bankrupty desperately needed a big commercial hit .Consequently classical adaptions and long tracks were banished in favour of supposed radio friendly stuff.
Gone Too Sone and Daddy are the only half decent moments and one of those had a session drummer and keyboard player backing Greg Lake.
Unsurpisingly the record company went over the edge of the cliff soon after.

Well, there are excellent albums like Nursery Cryme or Trespass that don't have a single epic and they are great

The problem is that Memoirs, despite being an epic (due to the length), is IMO the weakest song of Love Beach.

The debut album has always impressed me for being a mission statement that reveals the major BALLS these guys had (the envious call it pretense)- The Three Fates may be ELP's most underappreciated piece. This  bands virtuousity and inaccesabliity has made it my passion for nearly forty years.

Brain Salad Surgery

-------------
When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Brain Salad Surgery was the only ELP album that has stayed in memory since the day I heard it.

Karn Evil 9 might be the best ( i.e.for me the most involved and structured, detailed) epic. Or Tarkus. Trilogy the most consistent album. But for me it's that superb debut - probably all that piano.

Pictures should be there and I'd live to see a majority vote for Love Beach (which I have never heard...). Heard all he others but not that one... must be the great cover... ;)
