Subject: The Index of FREE Post-Rock / Math Rock releases
Date Posted: August 15 2010 at 08:20
Hi everyone,
I have worked out a little "chart" of free Post-Rock / Math-Rock albums (EP and longer) for you. Of course the real number of free releases in this category might be much higher so please, if you know any other free releases that I don't, post here and I'll update the list accordingly.
Hopefully you will take advantage of this and download, listen and review these albums. The bands surely deserve it and I can guarantee you that most of the music is at least "good".
Also, hopefully the same will be done for the other PA categories, and maybe in the future a full index of free releases will be built as a site feature. Thanks are in order for everyone who contributed to the "Free downloads" thread, and to Easy Livin' and AtomicCrimsonRush for the indexes made in that thread.

I have heard Bullets in Madison and New Century Classics, both good albums.

I listened to the Monroe Transfer on their bandcamp and almost bought it afterwards but didn't because I was buying too much music at the time. I remember it being very good though.
Haven't heard any of the rest of this, at some point in the future, I'll have to do some explorin' and reviewin'!

Since you like Tortoise, I'd recommend you the short album by Tuna Laguna, it's somewhat similar (indie experimental rather than post-rock). Great stuff if I remember well (I think I haven't listened it in two years at least).
Mit Nekem is the name of the free album by Kepzelt Varos, already included in the index
A lot of them already have reviews, that's why I linked to the album page - so you can see how others have liked them.

Both Lost Reverie albums are worthy if you're into metal, it's a original mix between Prog Metal and Post Rock, not Post Metal.

Dully updated ? Updating is a favorite hobby among dull men (like myself). We update the shipping lists, the economic forecasts, the library lists, the corn grovers lists etc etc etc etc
Include the last album by Envinity in your list.

I was excited to find it, too, but in an end I'd rate it with a max. of two stars It's bootleg quality, unfortunately.

I'm not sure how much post-rock is in their music (though it's clear that's where they take a lot of inspiration from), but I'll ask the rest of the Post Rock team for an evaluation. Crossover might be a better fit for these guys, but we'll see.

There are quite a few good math-rock bands who offer free downloads, but not all of them are on PA. Here are a couple of recommendations:
Hoarder Myna: http://www.archive.org/details/LostChildren075" rel="nofollow - http://www.archive.org/details/LostChildren075 Fugue: http://www.archive.org/details/LostChildren072" rel="nofollow - http://www.archive.org/details/LostChildren072 Tangled Thoughts Of Leaving: http://www.archive.org/details/LostChildren067" rel="nofollow - http://www.archive.org/details/LostChildren067 (^ they are on PA)
And if I recall well, Time Columns are also math rock and very good: ../artist.asp?id=5589" rel="nofollow - TIME COLUMNS / ../album.asp?id=29120" rel="nofollow - Sunriseinthesea EP / http://timecolumns.bandcamp.com/album/sunriseinthesea-ep" rel="nofollow - download ../artist.asp?id=5589" rel="nofollow - TIME COLUMNS / ../album.asp?id=32222" rel="nofollow - WXLV Radio Live Session / http://timecolumns.bandcamp.com/album/wxlv-radio-live-session" rel="nofollow - download

Hmm, if I were to start such an index again, I'd want it to be for the metal genres, or from Crossover. IMO these are the genres where the best free music comes from (along with post/math).
And I added to the index the new EP from Up There: The Clouds, nice stuff.

Hey harmonium. I wanted to get back to you to tell what I thought of the EP's you suggested.
Rememberable Rifts by Hoarder Myna is very techinal, what I originally thought math rock was going to be like, very technical with little overall melody to go with it. Overall an interesting listen with the last track being a standout one for it's slightly more post-rock feel with the arpeggioed guitar and slow build.
The Fugue EP (Ancient Glass) is the one I think I enjoyed the most. It has a very laid back feel with keyboard as well as typical guitar/bass/drum. Very melodic too which is something I enjoyed immensely.
I'm giving a second listen to Tangled Thoughts of Leaving's Tiny Fragments as I write this. This EP is the strangest of the bunch. I was astounded to hear jazz piano, metallic style drums with double bass drum, and metal guitar throw into a blender. I'm still unsure what I think about this one, very eclectic too say the least, even with a screaming section!
Sunriseinthesea by Time Columns is very melodic. I have only given it one listen at this point, but I like the listen I gave. Very chill with its layered guitars. Something I noticed was the lack of bass which was different.
Thanks for the suggestions! Would you have any suggestions for math rocks bands to look into when I get money to spare? Also, what would be some good post-rock free downloads? Free legal downloads are awesome!

Cool! Thanks for the feedback. Good to know you liked the music, I was worried a bit because I made the recommendations without having listened to them recently.
Here are my three favourite math rock albums, which you absolutely have to get. One is Russian Circles' "Enter", which I think it can be streamed in full on YouTube:
Here's Don Caballero's second album, titled "2":
And the third is "Mirrored" by Battles:
Three albums so very different, each emphasizing another facet of math rock.
