Welcome to Round 2 Division 11 of Battle of the Prog Bands!  This time, our two contenders are Can and Faust.  Vote for your favorite, and the band with the most votes will move onto Round 3.  Please do not vote unless you have listened to at least one album by both bands.

Here is the tournament thus far:

I really love both bands, so this isn't an easy choice.  I didn't like either of them at first, but after aquiring a taste for the experimental through other bands, they both impressed more and more with each listen.  I'll go with Can, but I'll also give a very honorable mention to Faust.

I love both, but will tie it up with a vote for Faust.

Never could get into Faust for some reason while CAN is one of my fav Krautrock bands. Who will the salty one(saltyjon) pick?

I've never heard of Fuast either. Faust, on the other hand, makes pretty nifty collages of sound and noise. Alas, I prefer the hypnotic grooves of The Can.

Well, sorry.

Also, I think you'll find the correct grammar should be "Faust, on the other hand, make pretty nifty collages of sound and noise"

Yeah. Two can play at that game.

Well the Salty one likes both bands quite a lot...Faust needs some help too, but then again Can made Tago Mago.  Faust IV may very well be a strong 5-star album too, but not quite as strong as Tago Mago is, so I must vote for Can!

I'd use makes, as in the band makes.

Definitely is make, as in "the band make"

You see the word band is one unit so it's singular.

Yes, so wouldn't that be "it makes" rather than "they make"? This is terrible if I'm getting this wrong since I'm a copy-editor; however, my grammar program helps with such things when working.

But surely, since a band is just a group of people, it would be as in "they make".

It's like, if you're talking about a company, for example Apple, they're a group of people, so it would be 'make'. But if you were talking about a machine which made moterbikes or something, it would be 'it makes'.

Also, sorry for completely derailing the thread, lol.

I still don't know...I could take it as either "The members make" or "The band makes", and when you insert the band's name into the sentence, "Faust make" just sounds bad to me.  What do I know though, I'm just a science major. Wink

I like both, but slightly prefer Can. Also: the word "band" is singular, so it takes a singular verb. The band makes. The members of the band make. Even though a band contains multiple members, the word is singular and that's all that grammar cares about.

Can over Faust?  Interesting considering your review ratings (3 stars for the two Can albums that are considered their best, and 5 stars for two Faust albums.)  Did your opinion change, or do you just prefer other Can albums that you didn't review?

I definitely would say "the company makes money". I would do the same for other collective nouns. "Apple makes software" is not incorrect.  "Apple's employees make software" is correct.

Anyway, moving on from basic grammar, I'm surprised to see Faust so far behind. Perhaps, in this case, Can made a deal with the Devil.

Agreed.  Even though I voted for Can, I wish Faust would have fared better in this (like Henry Cow in the last match).  I guess a while a lot people here like Faust, they just like Can better.

I almost voted for Can myself. Can is great, but I went with the underdog.  Like Henry Cow and Magma, I'd be very happy to see Can or Faust win this competition (not that it will happen).

Faust is not as well known, though, so it's at a disadvantage.  Compare the number of ratings for the studio albums.  It would be interesting each step of the way to compare the number of ratings to the poll results. I'm hardly complaining, though, about Can in the lead.

I am not a fan of Tago Mago, and I love Faust's debut. I love Ege Bamyasi and have been a bit disappointed with the other Faust records I have heard.. I like Future Days a lot (and have probably warmed to it a bit since that review) but I still don't know whether I'd give it four stars based on the reviews guidelines. I also think the members of Can are superior musicians and like what I've heard of their playing on other artists albums. It was a tough call, but lately I've been in more of a Can mood than a Faust mood.

EDIT: I just looked through my reviews and I'm amazed I gave Faust IV five stars. My opinion on that has definitely changed since I wrote it. I'll have to revise it soon.

Gotta love it!

Post-89 music is a mistake, so naturally, I have to do something to erase that error.

Music peaked in 1933, silly hippy

'tis true, I'm guilty of sinning.  I blame the fact that the LP did not yet exist.  I must compensate by listening to derivative dretch

I must have missed how Faust managed to win from both Neu! and Ash Ra Tempel.

Obviously the Can

I hope TD wins that one. Big smile  I like Floyd too but of the albums I've heard from each TD really blows them out of the water for my preferences.

Me too. Floyd is great, but they get too much fanboyism on these boards and I honestly prefer TD.

Goodness, I nearly missed this one.
Quite surprised to see how much Can is trouncing Faust.  Shame.  I appreciate Can but they often leave me cold.  I prefer Faust by a large margin.  Don't know that my preference is going to make much of a difference, though.

You preference won't make a difference when it comes to which band wins this, let's face it, Faust can not win (unless it makes a new deal with the Devil), o,r at the least, a "win" would be highly improbable. Faust has pretty much already kicked the can, or the Can has kicked Faust, whichever way one wants to express it.  However, if by you having stated your appreciation of Faust just one person comes to appreciate Faust or appreciate Faust more, then one might look at it as some kind of victory. I don't think either band had a real chance from the outset to win this contest, but what matters, I think, is that people may discover, re-discover, or re-evaluate music/ bands thanks to these polls.

I've discovered quite a lot of music thanks to polls that I might not have sought out had it not been for the polls. Sometimes the polls, and more specifically the posts, have led me to give music another chance, or dig deeper, which has led to much more appreciation (and sometimes less appreciation). I don't think the contest results matter nearly as much as that. I tend to look at polls as an accessory to discussion that can lead to great discoveries or new insight. Ultimately, I don't really care which one wins -- my tastes are not the most popular, and I'm fine with that, but many of us still strive to make our tastes more popular since we're enthusiastic about sharing our passions (and when we find like-minded people, we can recommend to each-other).

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Beautifully put, and I couldn't agree more.  This speaks to what I value about PA overall.

Curse you UndercoverBoy! Your brash challenging of my vote has left me conflicted and confused. At the time I was so confident, but I've been listening to Faust over the past few days and now I rather wish I'd voted for them. I just don't know which band I like better! CryConfusedAngry

Long story short, they're both amazing and it's a shame for either of them to get eliminated

Only very slightly familiar with Can; never heard anything from Faust. No vote.

I can only make the gap wider I'm afraid - But I like Faust too and up against many, they would get my vote.

I hope Can win this but I can't see it happening

Poll's over.  The winner of Round 1 Division 11 is Can.  Can will now move onto Round 3, and Faust is out of the tournament.  See you at the next match of Battle of the Prog Bands!
