These are the two most quintessential jazzy prog thrash/death metal bands around, both of which have reunited recently. These two bands are widely appreciated in the technical death metal scene, and their albums from the early 90's are on the rise to legendary status. For me, it's Atheist easily, but there are plenty of Cynic fans around here as well.

May the voting begin!

Cynic definitely.

I liked their techdeth stuff, as with Atheists, but their newest album is a much better change of pace.

Cynic all the way! They play steinbergers. I mean, come on!
Even though I live in the town where Atheist is from... haha

I might regret this later but I'll go with Atheist cause I've never heard anything by Cynic

Cynic because of Traced in Air and an awesome live performance. It's hard to vote against the band that made Elements, though.

Atheist is far better, they are a very inovative band, and Cynic's musical style irritates me

Cynic is definitely on a higher level than Atheist. Traced in Air is beauty. One of the best metal albums ever made.

Atheist is a good band and I enjoy their stuff. But easy choice for me.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Cynic is fantastic and seeing them preform traced in air was beautiful.
although i do love Atheist quite a bit.
i mean unquestionable presence is amazing in every sense of the word
it's a tough decision
but i have to go Cynic

Atheist but honorable mention of Cynic

Really don't mind if you sit this one out.
My words but a whisper, your deafness a shout.

Atheist.

All 3 of their albums are brilliant, and each was a little better.

I liked "Focus" but not really "Traced in Air" from cynic

Cynic. I was listening to Atheist just two days ago and I realized it sounded a bit dated these days. Some bands are better remembered than rediscovered...

Open your eyes, it's full of surprise, everyone lies,

This. I can't wait for Jupiter in November though.

I have never listened to Cynic. So my vote goes to Atheist.
I haven't really listened to Elements yet, but Unquestionable Presence is the best metal album i have ever listened to.
BTW does anyone know what time that wacky riff at the beginning of Mother Man is in?

Atheist Absolutely!!! Jupiter is INSANE!

I can't think of anything worse than waking up next to someone & not being able to remember their name, or how you met, or why they're dead

Cynic...mostly for Focus. Man I love that album.

They are both excellent bands, but the reverse is also true. Many votes for Cynic with comments about not ever listening to Atheist. Me - just excited for some new Atheist after 17 years!!!!!

Cynic, because "Traced" is just so damn good. I like atheist though, especially the bass work of Tony Choy. Hope the new album can give "Traced" a run for its money.

A little late to the party here, but better late than never. I prefer Cynic in terms of personal taste, but Atheist was more influential and also has a larger body of work. Atheist released Piece of Time, Unquestionable Presence, and Elements before Cynic released Focus. I would bet that without Atheist, Cynic would sound a lot different today.

Cynic ! But if I could choose only one metal/fusion band it would be EXIVIOUS

ATHEIST! One of my new favs
Cynic gets way too cheesy for me to tolerate

I'm so mad that you enjoy a certain combination of noises that I don't

THIS IS SO HARD.

But, I vote for Athiest because Elements is definitely one of my favorite metal albums.

Atheist are awesome. I used to try and tolerate Cynic's vocoder vocals, but now I've given up and declare them an insult to my eardrums.

Atheist, Traced is limp-dicked music for psuedo intellectuals, Unquestionable Presence is one of the best metal albums recored period.

Cynic because of Focus. It is cool though how innovative they are now Traced is so different from Focus. Focus is a true gem.
