Keith Emerson is a keyboard virtuoso and a very good composer of prog. My second vote goes for Carl Palmer, very good drummer who composed almost all my favorite pieces on "Works Volume I and II" (Bullfrog) . Greg Lake is of course an expert of the bass but I sometimes don't like his singing (already in "Cat Food" of KC), and especially his compositions after "Brain Salad Surgery" who pointed towards a more pop and less adventurous direction (Watching Over You, I Believe In Father Christmas, Nobody Loves You Like I Do)

E - Keys - I play 'em all with ease P - Drums - listen here she comes L - Bass - playing in my face On a side note I always thought the lyrics were : 'Drums listen as she cums' 'Keys a playin' on my knees' 'Two diamond tigers in the sky' But that's a whole other thread  ------------- Thank you for supporting independently produced music |

Can't vote. Can't stand any of em now, they're shadows of their former selves. But when they were in their prime ... all three were great. Back then, I'd go for Lake because of his excellent and underrated bass playing as well as his marvelous voice. Which now sounds like saccharin. ------------- PROGMATIC |

Can't really vote for a favorite member. ELP were one of those bands where each contribution was integral to their formula, like Zep. In my opinion anyway. When Emerson & Lake recruited Powell, they were a different band, but not a bad one. I can't believe I gave the ELPowell album such a scathing review on here. I've been listening to it a lot lately, and my re-appraisal is at least 3 stars. I guess Emerson was the musical backbone, but the music was brought to life by the other two. I've been on a bit of an ELP trip since seeing them live back in July. I've embraced them at last!  ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

Difficult. When they were in their prime, they were probably the best drummer, keyboard player and bass player of their time. Technically they are all equally great. So I'll decide after my own interests. When I listen to music, the thing I listen to first is the rhythm and the drums. So I'll vote for Palmer. |

Emerson plays, what I know, on keyboards only (and he´s composer too).

Growing up I would say Keith Emerson was my hero. However I have to say that ELP would have been nothing without Carl Palmer. This is absolutely extraordinary. Keyboard hi jinks and great nifty bass work but Palmer underpins with a ferocity and control on the kit that is unmatched.

Creatively speaking the 75% was probably fair enough with Lake about 20% and Carl 5%. Emerson's decline as a composer after 1977 certainly killed ELP. But I still believe that Carl Palmer was more important simply because there were few drummers who could have coped with Emerson's compositions. Jon Hiseman perhaps but he was too jazzy perhaps for Emersons ideas.
At the end of the day its a fun poll. ELP were a great band and all three were as equally important so 33.33% (recurring) is the correct answer!

Who's greater - Mozart or pianists of genius that e x e c u t e d HIS compositions??

I think they're all fabulous musicians but went for Carl Palmer cause he has got the fewest votes !

They were extraordinary musicians, all three of them.! But for the sake of this poll I'll go with Carl Palmer. I mean, he can't be credited enough for his jaw-dropping drumming on their first five albums, so it seems unfair that he should be trailing behind. |
