ok i give the first shot to try to make a topp 5 list of my favorite Genesis songs, (without clinging to 6 or 7 or 15 Confused it is that hard)

1. Firth to Fifth (first time I heard this on SEbP I was in tears, almost. it is s powerfull halflong epic which  is like a real workout for youre musical brain-cells who works beyond capasety during this song)
2. Watcher of the Skye (epic intro, complex midle section, with almost blastbeats from mr Phil)
3. Suppers Ready (if Firth ot Fifth is hard-work, Suppers Ready is a 12 course dinner in a Michelin resteurant)
4. Seven Stones
5.  Dancing with the Moonlit Night
(6 the cinema show, 7, Carpet Crawlers, 8 Home by the Sea) could not resist Embarrassed

1. their total understanding of Harmonie in their progrock  primetime, and later managed to create atmospheric tunes wich make the other New Wave bands crumble.
2. Five fantastic musicians, souls, dieties whos music reach such beautie, flaveour, and substance, which the youth of today sadly misses.
3. fantastic keybord solos and chords, crisp druming, droning bass, magical guitar and great storytelling by the courtbard mr Gabriel.
4. their nostalgic sound of the English countryside.
5. eh, the Mellotron intro in Watcher of the Sky, the Keybord Solo in FtF, Wilows Farm, the Lamb (in its enternaty).

3. the put a new meaning to the word melodie they widened the specter of Harmonies used in rock, made rock more cinematic.

 such a fantastic band Clap

^of course i will thats the fun about creating concepts, you stick with it and develop them, like a good marketing trick, you trye something, it might work, it might FAIL, or it goes ERROR, and I have had them all.
failed, succeded, but this time I think ive got my invention settled.

soon KC, GG, VDGG, PF, ELP, Rush and probably some else (i only need more albums by them all to gett some perspective)

1. chose youre 5 (or 10) Genesis songs:

- Looking for Someone
- Stagnation
- The Knife
- Harold the Barrel
- Supper's Ready
- Can-Utility and the Coastliners
- The Cinema Show
- Battle of Epping Forest
- Return of the Giant Hogweed
- In that Quiet Earth

2. also 5 things about what makes Genesis great or apeal to you as a fan of music:

- Tony Banks, no doubt. His distinguished style, with unique synth approach, thrilling mellotron and original piano/organ work.
- Peter Gabriel. His lyrics are a big part of my enjoyment, especially in The Lamb. His vocals are fanastic as well.
- Steve Hackett. While not a favorite guitarist of mine, he definitely is part of my big Genesis enjoyment, without his subtlety it wouldn't have been the same.
- The compositions overall, they were very different from Yes' more rock approach and of ELP's heaviness and classical-led.

To list top 10 of Rush was so difficult but Genesis top 10 is impossible. I prefer Rush for their continuing and for their love for their own band also for the 18 albums and the courage of LeeLifesonPeart (united as one); even though Genesis have less albums Genesis music is more artistical.

Five things I love about Genesis

Genesis created a unique brand of progressive rock strong on imagery and theatrics.
They pushed the boundaries of the live experience.
Their music is emotional amd dramatic.
Technically one of the best bands of the seventies.

Also this I could not say better.
I also like the influence of Bach on their music. (Even if they do not say it, so it sometimes verges on plagiarism as on 'Horizons').

all have contributed with nice lists of songs and that I think is nice,

also good to hear all the different elements people find in one band, that is what is nice with prog bands, they cover many layers (in the audioable sphere), which differs from ear to ear, and moods is different to each individual.

I just re-read the 5 things about Genesis. I see Hacket Hacket Hacket, but my IMMORTAL is

1. Anthony Phillips - wrote "The Musical Box and Fountain of Salmacis" as well as All of "Trespass" an album which I hold dear.

2. Peter Gabriel. His vocals on Stagnation and the Musical Box were the most impressive I had ever heard. His emotional and vocal tones were unique, TWILIGHT ALE HOUSE

3. Banks Banks Banks, his keyboard wizardry especially Supper's Apocolypse in 9/8..........

4. Collins - Supper's Ready....short drum roll at end? Though Second's Out version IS great by all means "Chester Thompson couldn't do the drum roll (one of the most difficult drumming techniques there is). And Phil's pounding out of Musical Box and doing the alto Supper sections behind Gabriel.

5. Hacket/Rutherford - Rutherford does a magnificent job of bass notes throughout, but have you heard them lately on "Please Don't Ask?" Follow Michael on that one, just beautiful.  Besides, his peddles on Firth of Fifth and Can-Utility. Hacket? What a hack lol. I'm still pissed at him for leaving.

I had never heard prog before Genesis, I started late, I heard Carpet Crawl then delved in and back-tracked. OK it WAS 32 years ago Lol

Now there's a hard thing to say, after Genesis is my favorite band and this business lists and "top 10" are not my forte. But definitely the best of the best of the best for me are(not necessarily in that order)
-Supper's Ready
-Firth of Fifth
-In the Cage
-Los Endos (it's hard to pick a song Atota because he's my favorite album of the band, but this is the best instrumental of all time)
-Eleventh Earl of Mar
-One for the Vine
-Duke 's Travels
-Home by the Sea / Second Home by the sea (for me is just a song, and I know it's pop, but ...)
-Domino (call me crazy)
-Driving the last spike

As for the
reasons I love this band, are simple:

-Tony Banks is my favorite keyboardist of all time
-Peter Gabriel is my favorite song writer and along with Phil Collins is one of my favorite vocalists
-Mike Rutherford is the best "quick fix" of progressive rock (kidding, Mike, you are a genius)
-Steve Hackett is tied with
David Gilmour the most amazing guitarist in the universe to me

in short:

1. Supper's Ready    One of the top all-time prog epics--excellently arranged, strong, emotional theme, but with interesting free-association type stuff.
2. The Fountain of Salmacis.  Excellent symphonic-prog arrangement, hard-rocking yet with a air of aloof classicalness.
3. Cinema Show    Beautiful somewhat dreamy theme/arrangement with superb extended keyboard solo.
4. The Knife        Powerful anti-war song with strong driving rhythm and other superb sound mix/vocal touches.
5. Los Endos.    A finale (?) of themes on TOTT. A little too short though, wish it would continue.

This Is A tough Task: I'm only 17 but I've been listening to Genesis for most of my life, something which you can credit my father for. I could make a Top 50 list and barely scratch the surface.

That being said...

2. Supper's Ready
3. Duke's Travels
4. Home By The Sea/SHBTS
5. Deep In the Motherlode/Land Of Confusion
6.Firth Of Fifth
7. In The Cage
8. Man On The Corner/Mama

-I can't decide on the last one.

I liked the group its ability to set a mood and tell stories.
I like how their playing was always subordinated to the mood and direction of a piece, yet never sacrificed.
I like how the arrangements moved and shifted about and often ended up in a different place from where they started.
I like Steve Hackett's guitar playing.
I liked Peter Gabriel's voice.

Some of Genesis' contributions to Prog were:
Lyrical and instrumental storytelling
Dynamic contrast
Texture with 12 strings
Ambiguity of instrument timbre - guitars that sounded like keyboards, keyboards that sounded like guitars
Playing innovations - two handed tapping, unusual chords often with unusual tunings, strange sounds in general, ...

2. The Knife
3. The Return Of The Giant Hogweed
4. Blood On The Rooftops
5. Watcher Of The Skies

Maybe it's due to Genesis Live being my first album by them, and my only one for the longest time that those songs resonate strongest with me even now. W&W was my second, hence my love for BOTR. My fav album of theirs for the longest time was Lamb, but I always enjoyed listening to it as a whole, so the individual tracks didn't stand out so much even though a lot of them are great.

Watcher Of The Skies

The thing I dig about Genesis, other than the songwriting and craftsmanship, is their theatrical yet studious approach to the tunes.  And in the beginning they sat down to play, and the lead singer sat behind a bass drum.

What attracts me to art rock/prog pop is that "other thing".  The music is being performed and can be heard and experienced, but there is also something palpable, some other thing that I can't quite grab ahold of or describe, but it is there in and around and next to the music nonetheless.

Okay, this was really hard to do. The ranking between those ten is pretty much gut feeling and could change at a whim, and I still don't feel good about leaving out certain songs like "Squonk", "The Musical Box", "The Lamia" and "Home by the Sea". But anyway:

1. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight
2. Blood on the Rooftops
3. Mama
4. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
5. Cuckoo Cocoon
6. The Fountain of Salmacis
7. Behind the Lines
8. Dodo/Lurker
9. Watcher of the Skies
10. Turn It On Again

Oh man, I just listened to Can-Utility and the Coastliners twice, it had been quite a while, and that tune packs a serious punch.  It's got just about everything I'm lookin' for in a tune, great lyrics, some different and interesting movements, and a beautiful jam section that builds into a cool finale.

This forum has already paid dividends in my musical world.  Thanks.  Oh and, this tune has now moved into my Top 10 from Genesis.

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

How can I choose? My favourite songs by my favourite band...

1. Suppers Ready
2. Ripples
3. Time Table
4. White Mountain
5. Burning Rope - ATTWT was the album that got me into prog in the first place, and this was the song that really drew me in.

Ask me again tomorrow and it would be a different 5 - how could I miss out something from SEBTP, or LLDoB? What about One for the Vine? Or Mad Man Moon. Just too hard to choose...

Ok next: what makes them great?

1. Music - didn't let virtuosity get in the way of good music. It always feels like the music comes first, not "look how well I can play" (but they play well too...)
2. The way they vary the sound, not just relying on the same textures all the time
3. Intelligent thoughtful lyrics, not like most pop bands who seem to have a one-track mind
4. Tony Banks - as a keyboard player myself, I appreciate him more than I do other kb players
5. Maybe it's because I'm English, maybe similar social background, but I feel I can relate to them as people - they don't feel like way out, over-the-top, Spinal Tap rock star types, but more ordinary in some ways. Of course, I don't know them, except through their music and the occasional interview, but I feel like I do. Especially Tony, I think we'd get on well together :)

What are your sources for the claims of Phillips writing all of that? No way, it's impossible!

This is a difficult task. I'm more into their albums than singling out particular songs. I'll give it a try.

1-Los Endos
2-Afterglow
3-The Knife
4-Musical Box (Closing section.)
5-Watcher of the Skies (Single version.)
6-Blood On The Rooftops
7-Entangled
8-Squonk
9-Carpet Crawlers (1999 version)
10-Looking For Someone

It's an odd list, I know. As much as I adored Genesis years ago, I don't think time has been kind to much of their material.

Tough one... My taste with this band seems to be drastically changing these days, so this list is very much a work in progress.

1. Carpet Crawlers (Never thought a song so seemingly simple could captivate me like this one did.)

2. It (Best closer to an album ever!)

3. The Musical Box

4. Supper's Ready

5. The Cinema Show

6. Firth of Fifth

7. The Lamia

8. The Colony of Slippermen

9. In the Cage

10. In the Rapids (No kidding; in the context of the story, this is one of the most powerful parts of the Lamb album. I cry every time.)

I never heard them until they were a pop band. Then I discovered 'Lamb' and it blew my mind.

10. Mama
9. Turn It On Again  (Their pop songs are great too...for pop songs.)
8. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (Love the keyboards.)
7. In the Cage (Favorite first line of any song... "I got sunshine in my stomach...")
6. Anyway  (Vastly underrated)
5. The Carpet Crawlers (Awesome lyrics)
4. Fly On the Windshield ( Kind of like The Lamb meets Can-Utility)
3. Dancing With the Moonlit Knight  (Incredible musical journey in a more compact song)
2. Firth of Fifth  ( Supreme musicianship...especially the guitar solo)
1. Silent Sorrow On Empty Boats  (Even though it looks like a bogus pick...it feels lika a breath of magic to me)

Honorable mention: Watcher of the Skies, The Lamia, The Colony of Slippermen, Wot Gorilla, Musical Box

I know my picks are too Lamb heavy to be taken seriously, but I really dig the explosion of creativity that occurred on their last joint effort with Gabriel. I'm still trying to digest 'Supper's Ready'.

1. Watcher of the Skies (ba da da dum bum bum bum bum ba dum ba ba dum ba ba dump in your head all day)
2. Firth of Fifth (so many good feels from flute to guitar)
3. The Battle of Epping Forest (It just struck me as a really cool song with all of the perfect changes)
4. The Fountain of Salmacis (gave me the most extreme chills I have ever had)
5. Supper's Ready (MASTERPIECE)
6. Can-Utility and The Coastliners (another cool ass change and rhythm to it)
7. Cinema Show (connected all of the songs and wrapped up the album (Selling England by the Pound) as a whole)

If I was stranded on an island and the god of prog rock told me I could only listen to ten albums for the rest of my life, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound would be two of them. Prog Rock means all lot to me because it put meaning back into music. I will occasionally listen to pop but Prog is my life and Genesis is the perfect blend of both. Just a little bit of pop and good helping of prog.

Put a Watcher of the Skies reference in our bands first song. (will be on YouTube soon)

No order of course, but the 2013 line up of Genesis songs would look like this.

10) Watcher of the Skies. (love that warm mellotron sound.)
9) Mama.(an electronic drum sound that really agrees with me.)
8) The 11th earl of Mar. (incredibly catchy chorus and terrific drumming.)
7) Cinema Show. ( Tony Banks is a wizard on keys in this one)
6) In The Cage. (thee most incredible Lyrics of any Genesis song right now for me.)
7) Dukes Travels ( terrific Instrumental. One of their best.)
8) Suppers Ready--The live version off 2nd's out/phill Collins( Genesis put together their greatest live performance of this song of all time. Nothing beats it, especially the remastered version by Nick Davis.)
9) Squonk. ( flat out. This song sounds amazing from start to end. Very balanced tune with some heavy lyric content.)
10) Domino--Live over Europe version in 2007. ( Chester's drums really bring this song to life when the Domino starts to Role. Meaning when the song picks up fast mid way through. ;)

Those choices I'd be comfortable with. As we all know here though, Genesis have an incredible catalog of songs to choose from. I think by next month my list could look a lot different due to all the wonderful things their are to appreciate in Genesis's large-spanning career. ;)

1. "Supper's Ready" Hard to go against it. In this musical journey/exploration that's made up much of my life, I haven't found a greater song.
2. "The Musical Box" No transitions, but I love the massive dynamics and the feel. I even wish it was longer. I LOVE its ideas (musical)
3. "Firth of Fifth" My introduction to Genesis. The performances on here are all fantastic. Tony Banks is.. wait for it....... key.
4. "The Cinema Show" I love the transitions. It's got a magical feel, and then the 7/8 section is fantastic.
5. "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" Dramatic. Many unique aspects plus excellent lyrics. Revolutionary Symphonic Prog, as are pretty much all these tunes are.

Not very in-depth explanations, but I'll leave that to reviews on their albums later. Just joined the forum!

Why have 5 (or 10) songs when you could have 20 (or more!).

Anyway, I don't think I have an exact order really, though I'll give it a go.

1. Entangled
2. Burning Rope
3. Here Comes The Supernatural Anaesthetist
4. The Carpet Crawlers
5. Undertow
6. The Lady Lies
7. Deep In The Motherlode
8. Squonk
9. Cuckoo Cocoon
10. Scenes From A Night's Dream/Robbery, Assault and Battery/Ripples

Overall, "...And Then There Were Three" is one of my favorite albums of all time.

I also really like "Silent Sorrow In Empty Boats".

Oh Genesis! My favorite progband!

1/Watcher of the sky (this song is a big dream where I want to stay all my life! An incredible end!)

2/Supper's ready (...And it's "hello babe, with your guardian eyes so blue. Hey my baby - don't you know our love is true.", when I heard this sentence I feel amative!)

3/Dancing with the moonlight knight (it's for me a small super's ready)

4/One for the vine (with its large softness, this song is unforgetable!)

5/The knife ("Some of you are going to die, Martyrs of course to the freedom that I shall provide." A great final!)

6/Firth of fith (Legendary piano intro and guitar solo!)
7/The musical box (steve hacket and peter gabriel sing and play like gods)
8/Dance on a volcano (a very interesting experimantal song)
9/Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats (rocked by this quiet song Smile)
10/Looking for someone (first real song and first real masterpiece!)

1/All the songs writen by Peter Gabriel are brilliant!
2/Genesis had the spirit of experimentation but never lost the melody and suceeded to install a coexistance between rythms and melodies.
3/The singer and the musicians are excellent!
4/Lyrics are intelligent and poetic!
5/All the covers of Genesis are so beautiful!

Did Genesis do something for Rock n roll? Yes! No one on this topic said it: Steve Hacket played with tapping before Van Halen!

Sorry if it's difficult to understand my sentences but I am 15 years old and french, I try to speak correctly english but it isn't evident....

- Cul de Sac
- Can Utility and the Coastliners
- Domino (yes)
- It's gonna get better (yes, again)

Ya, isn't that amazing?  And on an acoustic guitar no less!  Actually the guy in the video reminded me most of Stanley Jordan, the jazzer who did a similar style of 2 handed tapping and became popular in the early/mid 80's.  Their style is really to use tapping in a chordal way.  As far as electric guitarists tapping a solo goes, I think the earliest one I'm aware of is Jimi Hendrix in 1968.  I was shocked the 1st time I heard "Hey Joe" from the Live at Winterland CD...the intro is this free form kind of buildup and he's clearly tapping his brains out.  I guess it's really not surprising though as he was such an out-of-the-box kind of player.
