EDIT: I'd like to sort of be the "administrator" for the game btw. I would appreciate it if others didn't post their own clips. I have my own little library I'd like to work through and if we have several on the go at once, things will quickly get messy. If one is solved in my absence, never fear, I will be along within the day to provide a new challenge ;) Thanks :)

Calling all non-hip-hop listening prog heads!
Kanye West's sampling of King Crimson for his new single seems to have stirred a lot of people up but I don't know why. Rap producers have always sampled everything and in my fairly extensive rap music library I have many, many examples of rap tracks that sample progressive rock bands.

Now you don't have to like rap music to play this game, in fact it probably helps as you will be unlikely to already know what samples are in the track. It's just a game to see who has the sharpest nose for the original sources of the samples.

All you have to do is test your prog ears by naming the artist and song that is sampled. I'll put up at one at a time and when the answer is correctly guessed, I'll put up another.

PLEASE: Do not use the internet to find the answer, or if you do, don't reveal it but let someone else guess.

Anyway, the first one's REALLY easy, I don't want to stump people off the bat, in fact I'll be ashamed if people don't get it right away...

Alright, hear the track and NAME THAT SAMPLE! No cheating now!

Will post another once this is correctly named.

Well, it's Yes. That's obvious. Can't think of the song just now, though.

I've solved half the mystery; I'll let someone else do the rest.

Well done. I expected that one to be done right away. I wonder if I'll be able to stump you guys at some point?

But for now I won't try to, don't want to kill the fun too early, so I'll keep it pretty easy for now with this:

If you're a fan of the prog act in question, you should get this immediately...

Blastocyst- if you don't mind, I'd like to be the ringleader of this game ;)

I'll use that one next if you like but I'll wait till the one I've already put up is done. To have more than one on the go at a time will get messy.

Well done :)
I've got other easy ones lined up but now I'll try one that's a little harder in my opinion. The sample comes from a song virtually *everyone* here knows... but will you be able to recognise and place it?

Bloody awful song but I think I recognised Genesis.. Dancing With The moonlit night. .

Otherwise torture to me ears.

Re Slick Rick: the fading train horn is from Kraftwerk's Trans-Europe Express (I think).
The gong at the end might be from a prog record, but more likely a generic sample CD or sound effects record. Gong hit samples are a dime a dozen.

Alright, here's a clue-  you're looking at the wrong elements. The sample is the "are you ready" vocal that comes in behind the beat. And the artist's name begins with M.

Any takers?

As I said, it's not really relevant if you like hip-hop. It's just a game you can play to see who has a wide range of prog knowledge (so they know the sampled song in the first place) and who is good at detecting, recognising and recalling the sample.

Basically if you can't do it, you're not a *real* prog fan at all.

(That's the gauntlet thrown down) ;)

Ah well, I'll relent.

The sample is from Planetary Citizen by Mahavishnu Orchestra,

Sample appears at 1:03.

Alright so I stumped you once. Here's an easier one:

Good old De La Soul.

Posted By: Easy Money
Date Posted: October 17 2010 at 18:10
Your not talkin about the Steely Dan sample(s) are you, I didn't even have to play your clip for that one. I love that De la album.
The whistle parts are Otis Redding.

By the way, it was great hearing that old Mahavishnu cut. That brought back memories, I forgot how funky they became, thats a great track except that one falsetto voice is not good.

Posted By: Textbook
Date Posted: October 17 2010 at 18:26

Yep it was the Steely Dan sample I was looking for. There are Redding samples in there too but in this thread I will only be looking at samples from artists on PA.

Without looking it up, do you remember the name of the Steely Dan song?

Posted By: Easy Money
Date Posted: October 17 2010 at 18:47
Easy, its "Peg", a common cover tune to know how to play.

De la takes a verse segment from the song and then they make it into a chorus ... brilliant!

Posted By: Textbook
Date Posted: October 17 2010 at 19:05
I actually think that's the most interesting kind of sampling. Sampling a chorus and then deploying it as a chorus is just cheap. But using an element of a song in a different way- looping part of a solo so it becomes a melody or turning verse lines into choruses or somesuch is creative and fun,

Next: A little tougher but one that a fan of the band in question might be able to spot quite quickly.

Date Posted: October 17 2010 at 19:20
Good lyrics on that one, I didn't recognize the sample off hand, but figured it out by other means anyway.

You got it!

OK next one is SUPER easy as it's a prog standard but I'll still see if you guys can get it right away.

I more use it as an illustration of the odd effect sampling can have if you notice it. If you just treat this sample as sound it doesn't matter, but if you actually listen to the lyrics used, it has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the song. And if you happen to know the sample (which Mims' target audience certainly wouldn't) the clash of the worlds of cheesy pop rap and prog rock legend is disorienting. A lot of the rappers I've been using are respected/underground types, the sort of stuff I actually listen to. Mims, the guy this next song belongs to, is a plain and simple commercial palooka with very little to recommend him. And yet he uses this sort of arcane sample from a super serious prog band here. Sometimes you think a rapper puts real thought into his beat collection but on this occassion I'd eat my hat if it wasn't a beat that just got passed to him by the label.

Yep. You're good at this Chris S, catching up on Snow Dog.

btw, is this thread surprising you guys so far? It's just people were falling out of their trees about Kanye West and King Crimson so I wondered if learning that it's been going on for decades makes people rethink sampling's limits and history and the types of music that fed into hip-hop.

Here's a similar one but MUCH tougher- I'll be impressed if someone gets this.

It's similar in that it's another complete juxtaposition. Capone and Noreaga are a noted rap duo, capable of producing good rap music. Their tracks tend to be standard street issue stuff but they do a better job of it than most.

Except on the singles where label pressures and their own fears about their commercial potential cause them to become particularly dumb. This song is a typical "gangster get money" track.

BUT

it samples a much loved prog act. And the thing is, I couldn't think of a less likely act to be sampled for an album that was actually called Thugged Da f**k Out. Really goes to show you can sample anything for anything if the producer's got an ear for it.

But can you pick the sample? Like I said, I think this is a toughie...

Don't be distracted by the piece of music at the start- the sample is in the main track that begins at :12.

I was just working off the little backing riff (hence the 7 times comment) and it instantly clicked as something I've heard before That's a great sample though, I like it when they actually use it in a creative fashion.

Will bump this up onto this page:

Joelkid: Yeah I agree. Even though Blood Money 3 is let down a bit by the lyrics, the use of the Renaissance sample is highly unexpected and quite refreshing/engaging.

Chris S: Thanks :)

I'm expecting Kid Sister's Let Me Bang (a particularly nauseating rapper btw, maybe I'll switch back into trying to use some good ones after this) to be another stumper but then that's what I said about Blood Money 3 and it was spotted right away so who knows ;)

As I said, I've heard this act sampled a few times and I never notice it- the nature of the noise they make always blends right into the beat, doesn't stick out much. There, that's a little bit of a clue ;)

The second stumper in a row I see! I understand though because while this is a very well known song, the sample doesn't have a lot of character. It's one of those ones where you wonder why the producer didn't just recreate it himself.

Well my remit is "artists who are on PA" and Bowie is on PA. I won't use anyone who's not on PA.

Here's an example of "progressive rap" that uses a prog sample which should be pretty easy to identify if you're a devotee of the band. The MCs, Slug, Aesop Rock and MF Doom are among some of the most acclaimed in the underground and it's about video games too!

Here's an example of "progressive rap" that uses a prog sample which should be pretty easy to identify if you're a devotee of the band. The MCs, Slug, Aesop Rock and MF Doom are among some of the most acclaimed in the underground and it's about video games too!

put up the song in new page,

I think it's Kraftwerk, not sure on the songtitle

Well done Snow Dog!

Alright, here's a beat I really love from the excellent producer Black Milk (not that crazy about the MC) and it is built around a sample from a legendary prog song. Not some prog-related Bowie type sample Snow Dog, a real prog band. Thing is, though everyone's heard this song, I think the sample is virtually unrecognisable. Can anyone get it?

Well done! I myself had no idea for that one untill I looked it up. (I hope you actually guessed it rather than doing the same.)

Driving Me Backwards by Eno, that was easy.
I can really hear You and I in the above sample now. I'm surprised I couldn't hear it before.

Well done Easy Money.

Another one from a very well known artist but the song itself is kind of obscure.

Well maybe it was a bit much to expect people to remember the piano riff from Kate Bush's December Will Be Magic Again.

Seems like I've been stumping people a bit so here's one so easy it's redundant to guess- it's more to illustrate that yes, this band's been sampled too. Your kids may have been listening to classic prog acts all the time and never even knew it.

Dear Diary - Moody Blues, I never listened to Kate Bush, her vocals are kind of odd to me.

The title was something of a clue ;)

Here's a slightly more modern one:

You got it :)

But what about this one, a little more obscure?

BONUS ROUND

The lines are still open to place the sample in Cannibal Ox's Battle For Asgard.
But in the meantime, let's divert into the realm of prog that samples. Yes it happens.
A short time ago I posted Joe Budden's No Escape which samples Radiohead's Street Spirit. But some people don't realise that Radiohead's own hit, Karma Police, itself contained a sample from a very well known band. Without looking it up, can anyone give me the name of the band and song sampled in Karma Police?

Yeah I do agree, this is horrendous music.

Yeah I do agree, this is horrendous music.

Also agree. I only listen 10 sec., then abort the video. If I do not get it in that time I give up, and won't listen to it again. (Through this way I only recognized the Genesis and Renaissance sample.)

Textbook, how come you have such a library, and do you really listen to this stuff?Shocked ... LOL
