I've been wanting to pick up at least one of Anekdoten's albums for awhile now, but I'm pretty unsure about which one to get. Any recommendations?

This compilation album Chapters is probably a good place to start.  http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=23015 - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=23015   However, if you have a thing against compilation albums, I really enjoy all of their albums.  I would probably start with the first one Vemod and work your way forward.  If you are a King Crimson fan, Vemod probably has the most influence from King Crimson of their albums.

I find Nucleus to be their best album, with Vemod a close second. After that the following three are all good but not quite on that level.

Hi,

Vemod is the one I'm most familiar with ... but they have nice things in the other ones as well that you can hear in a lot of progressive music sites.

Thanks for the recs. I may just start from the first and work my way forward. I mean, why not. I like everything I've heard these guys/gals do.

I guess I'd go with Vemod too.

Anekdoten is a strange one for me. I find them easy to like, but difficult to love, if that makes sense?

You can't go wrong really, I enjoy them all though Nucleus is my favourite.

Get them in order, as their earlier albums are better than their later ones, in my opinion. You may also want to check out Morte Macabre and Landberk for similar music.

Definitely. Musically they're pretty good, but their singer is downright apalling (although the vocals are much better on A Time of Day).

The guitar riff at the end of A Sky About to Rain is totally stolen from No Quarter.

What a wonderful band Anekdoten is!

Currently, I have all of their albums but Nucleus and From Within. Of the ones I do own, I'd have to Vemod and Gravity are my favorites. Go in order; that's probably your best bet.

More people should listen to them. They're a very high quality band.

Such high quality albums, consistently in my opinion.  I don't think their albums get any weaker--different yes, weaker no.  Excellent songwriting.

If you're going to buy Vemod, be sure to get the version that has the bonus track "Sad Rain"--unless you plan to get the Chapters compilation, which has that track.  One of the most gorgeous tracks by Anekdoten, or any other band for that matter.

NUcleus for me, but perhaps you need to prepare yourself for the relative intensity of that album, say via Vermod, as suggested a couple of times above.

I would almost say that Anglagaard is closer to King Crimson than Anekdoten ... but in my way of listening to things, I can not say that I heard King Crimson when listening to these bands, and give them the credit that they deserve, which is ... very good music, and outstanding work.
