Worthless modern band vs. Pink Floyd vs.Worthless modern band vs. Worthless modern band

Haha, rare is the occasion where I cast my lot with the floyd. When its them against post-89 trash, the floyd wins.

Question: Do you consider them worthless because they are modern or simply worthless or is this just an attempt at trolling?

I tell it like it is. Thirty six hundred plus posts, and not a single one is in favour of post-89 buffoonery.

Say "NO!" to new music and say "YES!" to pre-89 heroes!

Pink Floyd of course.

Difficult to compare an historical prog leader band and ... Tool, Opeth and even Radiohead.

That's true Unhappy  I should have realized that there would be a Floyd bias before I made the poll. Oh well.

^ It's not really a bias. Pink Floyd just have a larger influence and following for obvious reasons.

You're right but I was kinda hoping that more people would consider the modern bands on their own terms rather than automatically choose Floyd because it influenced all the rest. I just wanted to avoid the whole "Old bands are better because they're old and new bands are worse because they're new" type of logic but yeah, I see your point.

Well I'm not pretending to know what the motive is behind every person who votes for Floyd but the fact that they are currently rating quite high in comparison with the other bands suggests there is some kind of bias and I think, as you said, that it's natural on a forum like this. But of course I have my own bias so I'll stop with this and get on with actually talking about the music Smile

I think Tool and Opeth are influenced to a fairly large degree by Floyd. I admit the connection to Radiohead is a little hazier but people often compare Radiohead to Floyd (specifically OK Computer to DSOTM).

Posted By: octopus-4

OK computer is a quite good album for me, but to be  honest I can't see a relation. I've listened to Tool for the first time in my life just yesterday and again I don't see this influence but in this case I may be wrong.

Walter's logic, then?

Gotta be Opeth for me. Tool in a tight second with PF, and Radiohead really don't do much for me.

Hmm..As far as Radiohead goes, it might be that both Radiohead and Floyd used synths in an experimental fashion. The two albums might be related more so lyrically than by anything else since the themes on both seem to echo each other. Also, people often say that Tool is the "metal version of Pink Floyd" (although they say that about Opeth too). Maybe if you listen to songs like Disposition or Intension you can hear the resemblance but in my opinion, Tool is a little closer to post-rock/post-metal than traditional prog rock.

With the more recent bands, it's tougher to make a call, since their careers are still valid and going strong. As of right now, I still find it hard to beat Tool, but that could change tomorrow. That's the beauty of the present. With Floyd, we know all their work already and have enough time to compare them with their peers in retrospect. Much easier to pick a favorite in that situation. At least for me.

I think Opeth are on track to be one of the greatest of all time. Pink Floyd already are. Tool and Radiohead, certainly significant bands, but not greatest of all time.

Except not nearly enough people enjoy scream-oriented vocals to put Opeth in that broadly-accepted a position, even in the future.

In a PF vs over hyped 'New progressive' bands PF wins hands down. I've listened to all of it except for Opeth which I only have 'Damnation' and they all have a long way to go to touch the material that Floyd produced.

JLocke: I dunno, Opeth played the Royal Albert Hall the other day. They're bringing death metal places people would have bet money it would never go. And even if it's never a mainstream proposition, they'd still be one of the greatest of all time to people who knew them which counts for something.

PF against prog metal (good band) against other ... with some scent of prog just for fashion? Strange poll...

I really like some modern prog, but - indie/brit-pop/pop-metal influenced bands with some borrowed synth sounds? Hmmm...

Poeple like me ( 55 years old ) have a longer story with floyd albums and it's one reason for choosing it but it's not the only reason , i think they did strong and innovative albums that will last longer time than some modern bands i mean radiohead , for instance , i like them but they sometimes did pretentious things, realy boring stuff and also made stupid statements like , for instance < genesis is an abominable band but we've stolen a few tricks to them ?? is it supposed to be a prog state of mind?

Pink Floyd, particularly for pre-Dark Side albums, and most particularly I think the "Atom Heart Mother" suite is terrific. Perhaps Walter would like that.  Both Waters and Gilmour have called it crap, and I would call it more of a Ron Geesin work than Pink Floyd. So, one can vote for that, while, in a way, vote against Floyd (or at least certain members of Floyd with, I think, rather large egos).

I like some Radiohead, but never really tried to explore the music much (not that interested).  I haven't liked any Tool I've heard yet, so uninterested in delving further.  I respect Opeth, but I don't think it's really my thing so I haven't explored the music much. Pink Floyd was my favourite band for years, but I lost interest until I rediscovered "Atom Heart Mother".

If Pink Floyd hadn't been in the options, I would have gone all the way for Radiohead. Smile  There's some Floyd influence in Radiohead's music but they are a vastly different band overall.  Tool and Opeth are very far away from Floyd, there might be some elements that you can trace back to PF but they are hardly a major influence on either band.

Yes. True progressive artists don't worship past prog artists to the point of pointless emulation. They take concepts and ideas from them perhaps, but then they press on and do their own thing. They try to innovate and be original. Yes didn't sound exactly like their influences, did they? They sounded like Yes. So what if a modern prog band doesn't like Genesis that much? Are they required to?

^ Although for a small monetary contribution I might be swayed into voting for a non-PF option...LOL

Agreed. Progressive is moving forward.

I think you and I are gonna get along quite well here. Wink

Thanks! I really like it here! You will be seeing me a lot. Big smile

Don't know why just these four bands are in this vote, but I say Radiohead because they are the proggiest of them.

All these are great bands, but Floyd is like four levels above the rest, with Tool coming in 2nd place.

It's like the difference between "SHHOTING A BULLET" (Floyd) & "THROWING IT" (all the rest listed).

After reading the comments here. I must admit that Floyd being in the poll was what got me here.
I do like Opeth, but only when not screaming.

If Opeth, Radiohead and Tool are anything but distant long forgotten memories thirty years from now then it might be fair to compare them to Pink Floyd, otherwise they should not even be brought up in the same breath.

I think Radiohead are comparable to Pink Floyd in terms of quality.

Not Tool and Opeth however, though those are good bands.

Pink Floyd take it but only slightly over Radiohead.

well it feels sort of silly to choose radiohead over pink floyd but at the end of the day, when it all comes down to my individual music enjoyment radiohead IS better. pink floyd is certainly fantastic and superinfluential but i enjoy the musical qualities of radiohead more.

oh yeah, tool and opeth are great too.

Albums like Meddle, Atom heart mother and Umma gumma are next to impossible to beat
... on the other hand...
imagine the poll would be "post-wish you were here-Pink floyd" against the other bands...
I would go for the other three...
Opeth, Radiohead and Tool all showed a great consistency, creating new & interesting stuff along their career without making any bad albums.

But, of course that's not the question

I'd say it's pretty equal for me, throughout all these bands. I've never been a huge Floyd guy and I've really learned to appreciate and respect Radiohead over the years.
