Hi Harmonium.ro again.Thank you for answering once again.Yeah there are a lot of bands. What's your favorite from this genre?

I am not a great fan, I find this kind of riffage a bit boring. I know Meshuggah and Gojira, both are good but the one I like the most is early Mastodon.

I don't find Cloudkicker to be djent, at least he sound completely different to the bands I mentioned above. I do like him, but I think he's rather cloudcore than djent.

Hmm, those guys have a pretty lax definition of djent. They even have Blotted Science there, which is the opposite of djent.

They are one of the essential bands of the tech/extreme scene. But djent does not equal extreme technical metal. Djent are those bands who emphasize crazy riffing, while Blotted Science emphasize variation and intricacies. Cloudkicker is somewhere in between (and not that heavy either).

Yes I agree.I prefer more Cloudkicker than Blotted science.

Blotted Science is NOT djent. Technical death metal does not equals djent.

How did I miss this thread?
Yeah, Blotted Science aren't djent. They have some math metal-ish elements but as a whole are not.
Djent is pretty much characterized by the timbre of low-tuned guitars, in addition to heavy math metal/electronic elements and clean production values.

naw, djent refers to the guitar sound, not so much the style (although playing style does closely relate to getting a djent sound)
it's that ssshhhlugh sort of thing that Meshuggah do, and, indeed, what all of Cloudkicker's guitar sounds like

Don't forget the GROOVE Kevin. That's important too.
About Blotted Science, that's because of the guitarrist. The guy is a mega technical freak. He is one of the founding members of Watchtower, so he is one of the forefathers of both technical and extreme metal. Impressive how 20 years later he is still alive and kicking!

I have no idea about tech stuff so I don't know what this means. I guess it's the same sound Colin was mentioning in his post.
Whenever I got examples of djent, the music was similar in style, so I assumed it's a style (with that kind of riffing as the main element).

well, to get that sound, you need, basically, EMG pickups, downtuned (or 7 or 8-string) guitars, and heavy palm-muting, which basically limits what your songs can sound like

Actually yeah, Intronaut has somewhat of a djenty tone in their latest, but stylistically it's not.
Yes Caio, groove is very important. And Ron Jarzombek is pretty awesome, I'm friends with him on Facebook.
Animals as Leader f*cking rule, but you guys are all sick of me worshipping them so I'll just leave it at that.
And Colin's right, for djent you pretty much need 7 or 8 string guitars and EMGs or Blackout pups.

Obscura is more an technical / avant metal album, as are most, of not all of Gorgut's works. Not my favorite kind of music but interesting, nevertheless.

this for sure should be in PA, I think It's pretty heavy, as in like, ponderous, not as in like metal

Alex, listen to Meshuggah's "Closed Eye Visuals" is the best example I can give straight off the bat. The guitars make a very noticeable "djun DJEN djun djun DJENT djun djun DJENT" kind of noise. That guitar tone is djent, and that word itself is just onomatopoeia for that signature sound. That's the thing all djent bands share in common.

I, personally, don't think so. Gorguts did used a lot of distortion and sounds that would be later used by the post thrash metal bands (AKA djen bands), but I don't think they are related.
I could be wrong in that matter, since those are not my favorite bands, with the exception of Meshugga, but AFAIK they don't have any correlation.

Very loose. Even Canvas Solaris is there.
Djent is one of these alleged genres that works well as a stylistic seasoning much better than a main dish. I enjoy those that incorporate it like 1980, Coprofago and Animals as Leaders rather than those who do one thing like Periphery. I was big into it for awhile, but it got old real fast.

Yes indeed. Make sure you throw the words jazz or fusion somewhere in the description. At least for Unorthodox Creative Criteria
