So what do you think? Oh and while you're at it, could you please recommend me some more bands that sound like them? Thanks.

Holy crap, well, I think I like Animals as Leaders a lot more, given their playcount on my last.fm as compared to Cynic's.

For groups like Animals as Leaders you should check out some of the bigger bands in the djent scene like Periphery, Cloudkicker, Chimp Spanner, Vildjharta, etc.

For bands like Cynic you should look at other prog. metal bands with heavy jazz fusion influence like Exivious, Aghora, Atheist (Elements era), Intronaut, Ephel Duath, Textures.

Meshuggah in my opinion is the perfect mix of Cynic and AaL. You will find a lot of bands that have that ballpark sound of Animals but as for Cynic, if it isn't Paul Masvidal then good luck!

My vote is still Cynic, can't outdo the fathers.

^Wow! Thanks so much for all the recommendations! All of that should keep me very busy Wink
I also like AAL better. Cynic has a few good songs but the vocals usually ruin it and I don't think they're quite as talented instrumentally.

I for one am actually fond of Paul's electronic vocals.  But Animals as Leaders is seriously just one of the most mind-blowing musical pieces to come out recently.  Tosin Abasi is an incredible player who not only is beyond amazingly skilled technically but also writes some incredible melodies.  I've actually gotten a guitar lesson from him and I saw them play for my second time a week ago.

Shocked lucky!! The man is a legend in my book too. Seriously, I cannot even air guitar to his playing lol.

Cynic was a huge catalyst for the paradigm shift in progressive metal. But in all honestly, I enjoy AaL more at this point. I really like Tosin Abasi. For being a monster, he is unequivocally humble.

My vote still goes out to Cynic...
AoL are great, but I get bored of their stuff quite quickly, I tend to find them a bit dry.

Is there really any comparison?? Animals As Leaders are a very good new band...but Cynic are legendary and their two albums are both pretty much perfect. Huge Cynic fan, so I'm biased, of course.

So far, Animals as Leaders appeals to me far more than Cynic, although I'm a bit skeptical if the latter served as an influence to many of my favourite bands.

AaL gets my vote.

Animals as Leaders is a great debut by perhaps the most important talent doing metal right now, produced by the #2 in the genre (Bulb). But they're just getting started. Tosin has taken djent and made it into something beautiful, but at some level Meshuggah created the genre.

Cynic was a legendary band with three monsters and a sound that still hasn't been duplicated. Easy choice for me.

Though if you were left with just these three albums for life, you'd be doing pretty good.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

As you know,I like djent.I like Animals as leaders but are over-technical.And I don't like that in music.Cynic has the combination of vocals(clean and growls,my favorite) and are more musical.

See, I've always thought that Animals as Leaders are so amazing because they've struck an incredibly fine line: mind-blowing technicality but with the songwriting still being the main focus.  Indeed, the melodies and songwriting in the album are the strongest point, even moreso than the technical virtuosity.

Definitely Cynic, but Tosin is also pretty excellent.

Cynic. There is a demo you can get of some of the guys from cynic that was made after Focus, performing under the name "Portal", which is quite good. Not to be confused with the Canadian or Australian bands of the same name. (the Canadian band is also quite good)

Slightly off topic but I have a burning hatred of Meshuggah. They're not even that complex. They just layer some off-beat drums (polyrhythms is a misnomer - they're not different beats per bar layered on top of each other) and play the same horrible three riffs over and over (the one with the low notes, then the high note, the chromatically rising riff, and the chugging riff).

On topic - I like Animals as Leaders. Cynic are al right but I've never quite got them.

Also, question - what does djent mean?

^Yeah I'm kinda on the same page as you. I haven't found very many interesting Meshuggah songs besides Bleed and Rational Gaze. AAL takes the Meshuggah formula and vastly improves on it. I haven't really gotten into Cynic either besides a handful of songs.

Indeed, they've really taken the scene by storm given how young they are an how little material they have.  Definitely a band to keep an eye on.

Two of my favorite bands ever, but Cynic will always be number one!

If you guys want to hear a band that kind of sounds like a fusion of Cynic and AAL you should check out my band Crossing The Event Horizon.

Wow dude! Your band rules! It really does sound like a mix between them. I'm also really interested to see what the rest of Organic Universe sounds like. The mix between synths and metal in your songs is really fresh and satisfying. Will you be coming out with an album? If so then I can't wait to hear it! Oh and I'm a pretty huge fan of sci-fi stuff so I think your band name is also pretty epic Clap

All the hype leading up to their release reminds me of Sun Caged. They had these awesome demos and mp3.com clips that got everybody all excited. Then we waited....and waited...and waited. When it was finally released it was washed out studio polished drivel and everything was done to make them sound as much like Dream Theater as possible. Very disappointing. I predict similar for Tesseract. How long has the same hair swishing video been out? At least 6 months that I have known about, and likely more since I'm usually late on this stuff. Don't get me wrong, I like the couple songs I've heard, but the scenario smells all to familiar.

On the subject of the poll:  Cynic was a ground breaker with their debut. But as far as my musical enjoyment, Animals as Leaders is much more enjoyable. Especially compared to Cynics latest releases. They did nothing for me.

Wow, thanks, I'm really stoked that you like my band haha. In a few weeks, we should have a new song up, a full one that's much longer than the clips we have up (around 7 minutes) called Stars and Vermin, and if you like the sci-fi thing you'll really like this one in particular. The lyrics are about the idea that stars are living organisms and in the far future civilizations come to realize this and a struggle for control of solar energy erupts between the stars and their host planets. I don't know whose gonna do the vocals though, if anyone knows anyone that would be interested, that would be sweet...I'm looking to do an online collaboration with someone. After that's finished I'll be recording the full version of Organic Universe. Once again, thanks for the kind words, and like us on Facebook if you have one!

Nice! It sounds like a really cool and original storyline that should go great with the music. And yes, I already liked your band on facebook Wink

The guitarist in Animals as Leaders is mind blowing. But Cynic have just the technicality (a little less though), but have the most beautiful ethereal musical passages

I don't like neither of them, clinical shred music.

I could understand that criticism for AAL and and Cynic's Focus, but I don't think it applies at all to Cynic's 21st-century material.

Wow that is a tough one, I really can't vote...for once I may have to say "like them equally"

If you like Cynic look into Atheist. They are not as jazzy and certainly not as mellow....more technical than progressive, but awesome stuff and still jazzy influenced. At least look into "Elements" by them!

Ha to each their own, though I don't quite get that for Cynic.
I mean yeah AAL is deff just epic riffery and djent and shredding (though IMO done much better than...well almost everyone else who tries) but Cynic?
Even Focus is not as insane and their most recent EP is just beautiful, ethereal music. : )

Cynic are not clinical shred music, that goes for all of their albums. I personally don't even consider them that "technical" either, as that would insinuate all out complexity, which I don't think they are.
Animals As Leaders can get a bit clinical, but the focus on the writing and the melodies ("songwriting" if you will) elevates the quality quite substantially IMO above most that could have the clinical shred music label. And as for Cynic, their songs are too well written I think, for that label to apply.

I'll vote Cynic but I like AAL as well.

Anybody who thinks Cynic is a shred band probably hasn't actually listened to them much, most of their guitar solo's are reliant on playing around with harmonics.
