The Dixie Dregs a Southern Rock band? Seem more like Fusion to me ...

Anyway, my vote goes to the Black Crowes.

I'd have to say Skynyrd but I'm a pretty big fan of southern rock as a whole

Yeah, Dregs are quite an enigma.  A southern-rock/jazz-fusion band from Augusta, Georgia.  Give a listen to tunes like Country House Shuffle, Moe Down, Ridin' High, or Where's Dixie (too name a few) to get a heavy dose of their southern influence.

The Allman Brothers Band because of their great instrumentals.

Like High Falls on the Win, Lose Or Draw - album  .

I'm from Virginia, so you don't have to tell me about Southern Rock. I would go with the Allmans. Especially the Duane era. They invented the whole genre. I would put Duane up against just about any rock guitarist, with the exception of Jimi, prog or not. I remember Steve Howe calling him in a Guitar Player mag interview in '74 the best American rock guitarist and was a major influence on him. He loved him. Which at the time I thought was pretty cool, prog admiring the southern boys and all. Of course Steve also liked Steve Morse as well.

marktheshark -

great post.  I agree Duane was a MONSTER player.  And I don't even like slide guitar as general rule.  They've had some great ones in that band.  I saw Dickey Betts live once and he was so hot, I don't think Ritchie Blackmore would have gone on stage after him!  Though I've heard from others that seeing Dickey was 50/50, sometimes hot, sometimes cold.  Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are no slouches either...but I'm with you on Duane.

You know, everytime I hear Blue Sky I just get tears thinking where Duane would've gone if it weren't for that fateful motorcycle accident. That solo was so beautiful and melodic. Granted, Duane was blues based but he could just dance around the blues and screw around with it and make it almost prog.

Dixie Dregs a Southern band? More like a Fusion Rock band..... Any band that used to have Jordan Rudess in it makes it cool

Really close between Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band. In the end I voted Skynyrd as they seem to be lagging behind a bit.

ol' Lynyrd Skynrd does the trick for me ... Free Bird, Curtis Loew, Simple Man, That Smell, Sweet Home Alabama, Call Me The Breeze, Workin For MCA, Saturday Night Special ... the band had too many good songs for me to ignore, even if the Allmans also had their moments ...

outside of  the obvious big two, I'd go for Little Feat, Black Oak Arkansas and Molly Hatchet in that order ... anybody a fan of the Hatchet song Fall Of The Peacemakers ... I love that one ...

Outside the Allmans, I go with Little Feat. Great combination of funk, blues and jazz. I always considered Waiting For Columbus one of the great live rock albums. Mainly 'cause I was there at Lisner Auditorium in '77 when they recorded it. Beautiful!

The Allman Brothers ,The Fillmore Concerts and Eat a peach are testiment to what a great blues band they were.

Little Feat are also great, listen to their live CD "Waiting for Columbus".

I'm not sure whether the Dixie Dregs can be called southern rock, certainly their good but more in the rock/ jazz fushion.

You didn't mention Goverment Mule which are a great live band.

While the Allman Bros are my favorite all time SR band. I must say the the Atlanta Rhythm Section is second. These guys were smooth as silk and had a guitar player in Barry Bailey that could play with anybody. Don't jump to conclusions at least not before you give them a second listen. Then object if you will but not before you give these guys a second listen...

Levon is awesome as is the band! Bob Dylan's
Basement Tapes with The Band is a rock classic,
though The Band should not be quite so
represented in the 2cd release, the 5 CD session is
a epic in the foundation of Rock n Roll!

The Basement Tapes contain some of Bob's
cleverists moments on tape!

I seriously think The Last Waltz is pretty much the best concert film ever done. Of course I love anything by Marty Scorcese. As film directors go, I think he's the bees knees.

if you haven't seen the black crowes live, don't miss out!! i've seen them twice and they do NOT disappoint.

PS i still voted for the allman brothers.

I'll divide my answer into two categories:

1) 70's southern rock... It's actually a tie between Skynrd and the Allmans for me. Improv jams, Allmans win hands down. I think Skynrd had better songs though, so I voted for them.

2) "New wave" southern rock... Black Crowes take this one, no contest.

Skynyrd. I like the Allman Bros. alot too. In general Im not a huge fan of Southern rock, but if Im having a few beers shooting pool or something, some old Skynyrd sounds good. Also the Outlaws' "Green Grass and High Tides" is an awesome track.

The Dregs are often labled a Southern band just from a geographic standpoint but their music is light years ahead of most other Southern rock bands.

The Allman Brothers are my all time favorite band of any genre. They pretty much got me into rock music. Anyway, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, ZZ Top and Little Feat I like as well. One great southern rock band this poll is missing is The Drive By Truckers.

From that list, the Allman Brothers, I guess, but a couple of hard-rocking (electric kick-ass blues, really), more recent Southern acts that I really enjoy are Kenny Wayne Sheppard, and North Mississippi Allstars.

Check 'em out, if you're up for a good time!

Well, just look at my avatar guys!

You know who my favourites are!

But I must say, overall, it's the Allman Brothers Band. for me.  I've yet to get any of their albums after Each A Peach (except the most recent album: Hittin' The Note - awesome!  Best album by a southern rock band in years).

I have everything ever done by Gov't Mule pretty much and I have a few signed CDs and even a signed setlist by the most recent lineup.  I've seen them twice, they are amazing, so tight!  I also prefer Haynes' voice over Gregg Allman's, hence why I prefer them.  Warren Haynes' has written some beautiful tracks.

And just listen to "Instrumental Illness" off of Allman Brothers Bands Hittin' The Note and get lost in the grooves!  And if you hear the live versions, it's even better!

Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are a force to be reckoned with, they work so well together, they can read each other and in my opinion, replacing Dickie Betts was the best thing they've ever done!  I do like Dickie Betts, I have one of his albums, but with Derek Trucks, there is a fresher, more proggy and jazzy, but less bluesy sound and that's great.  Plus just listen to Derek's slide playing!

I cannot wax lyrical about them much more!

Oh and one more thing: How come no Grateful Dead?

ZZ Top aren't Southern Rock really, they're a pretty generic blues band from what I've heard, a greay blues band of course, no denying that, but not reallly southern rock.  Lynyrd Skynyrd are great too, but so many people where I live like (and hate) "Sweet Home Alabama", it's getting annoying!  "Freebird" and "Simple Man" are just solid tunes.

If you want to add some newer bands, try: Phish, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Umphrey's McGee, moe. and even Buckethead (with Les Claypool, Buckethead and Stewart Copeland).

Mickey, how's Fillmore East going?

I am familiar with Audley Freed, Marc Ford, Greg Rzab and Andy Hess through their work with Gov't Mule (as guests).  Andy Hess is now in Gov't Mule of course.

I just have to buy some of their stuff.

Lynyrd Skynyrd have never really done "it" for me - they sound very samey I'm afraid. The band that really got me excited were The Outlaws. Three lead guitarists ensured some high octane rocking - never bettered than on their eponymous debut with the track "Green Grass And High Tides".

Although a rather atypical Southern fried rock band ABB does it for me

atypical because they were definitely more blues-based than the rest of the bands mentioned in the list >> most of those had strong Copuntry roots which is really a turn off for me

ABB, but Skynyrd is a distant second >> first album is fantastic, but the rest is still good or acceptable.

groups like MTB or CDB give me the heavesDead

Ps: I do not consider ZZ Top (which I love) as Southern Rock

Being from Georgia, I've grown up with Southern Rock and in some ways I'm sick of it. However, LS' "Gimme Three Steps" and ABB's "Statesboro Blues" will always be on my playlist.
I'd say Lynyrd Skynyrd, but ABB is close behind and they are hands down the best Southern band currently touring. Derek Trucks is every bit as talented as Duane, he just isn't as influential. ZZ Top is another one of my favorites: Billy Gibbons is one of my favorite guitarists. I also like Blackfoot, CDB, Dixie Dregs, and Black Crowes

I don't consider the Allman Bros. Band to be southern Rock. Sure, they were in the South, but they don't have a typical Southern Rock sound. They're closer to blues rock than Southern Rock.

ZZ Top is blues rock, no question.

I like most of the bands on there btw, so I don't detest southern rock.

I'll say ABB just because they're one of the best bands ever.

Ditto here.

By the way, The Presidents of the USA re great band. i know they are from Pacific northwest, but somehow they sound quite "southern" to me. The best rock band of 90's!

A question for you rockologists:  Do you know if there is (was) any southern-rock musician of African-American ethnicity?
