One band with alot of luw on PA against a band whitch don't get as much attention here as they should have, for me Procol Harum have the best musicianship

Pink Floyd have better feel to it , but this is hard to me both have magical moment

but few songs are as great as Hotel Grand ,

I require that YOU KNOW OVER HALF OF BOTH BANDS DISCOGRAPHY or 3/4th of their songs and cattaloge, and know their OVERALL sound when you giver youre vote

I want people to have gone to depth in BOTH bands and not skimmed the cream of one or the other

I KNOW that people here know more of PF but that dont meen that PH have done nothing else then A Whiter Shade of Pale

both debuted in 66/67 with singles and had a great period of records between 67 and 77-79 both developed alot and achieved their sound.

GAARR!!! A frustrating question.

Floyd is undoubtedly the band that broke more ground and inspired more musicians, but...I think I just happen to LIKE Procol Harum more. And I think that their debut might be just as important, and that A Salty Dog is certainly as good, as anything the Floyd could toss out.

It hurts to select the "both" option, but I think I have no choice.

(Although, to take the question literally, I think that Procol Harum RAWK more...at least, when they had Trower.)

Like them both a lot and appreciated Procol Harem even more after seeing them open for Jethro Tull, but had to vote Floyd by a little, I enjoy them more over all.

OK, I withhold my vote for PF. I don't come to the half of PH's discography. And I prefer A Salty Dog and especially Grand Hotel above A Whiter Shade of Pale.

I do not know much Procul Harum, so no vote for me. But I like it that you try to make them more popular on this site. Thumbs Up I like the song you posted!

This is one of those polls whose vote really depends upon what you are asking.

If it is which band is my favourite, then, as much as I love Procol Harum, then it is the Floyd.

If it is which band was more influential on the early prog of the late 60's or early 70's, then PH, as Floyd were still very much a psychedelic band and not a part of the emerging blues & other bands who would go onto develop what we understand as prog rock (this is a very controversial opinion, I know).

If, however, you are talking about the most influential or important prog band in history, then the answer is so simple as to be not worth repeating. Alright then, The Floyd.

Depend how you define prog, if Animals isn't prog than alot of thing we consider prog here is not.

ANIMALS?
There's not a single prog molecole in Dark Side, Wish you, Animals (to say nothing of ugly Final Cut) and in the most part of The Wall, whose last track is the only tune which can be defined prog.
Last real album well worth is Atom Earth Mother.

I can't vote because I haven't heard enough Procol Harum, but "In Held Twas in I" is great, and my favourite music I've heard from PH.  My favourite music with Pink Floyd's name attached to it is "Atom Heart Mother" - terrific.

Dark Side is probably my 2nd fave prog album of all time  and is the definition of prog in my books

Some good albums early on from Procol with Robin Trower, but except for their excellent live album with the Edmonton Symphony, once Trower had left, so did most of their fire and brimstone. The Pink Floyd catalog buries Procol Harum.

while I enjoy music of both,
I think Pink Floyd is more important in terms of influence to music in general, and to other genres (not limited to rock music)

In my eyes, a poll is only ever worthwhile when popularity does not get in the way; i.e. when the respective choices have a similar level of recognition, fame and public awareness. Then, we can actually see which band people in a certain community enjoy and treasure the most, rather than merely confirm the really obvious truth that Pink Floyd have more listeners than Procol Harum.

Yes but on a prog site all's fair among the legends, I suppose.  What I don't like is the "both" option; it doesn't indicate anything other than appreciation for both bands.  As far as I'm concerned the 'both' votes should be split between Floyd and Harum.

Yeah, there are polls that may work on a prog site between a general legend and a less known band... but this poll, before opening it I knew who was going to win. I once made a poll between Led Zeppelin and Rush, and then another with Renaissance, and both held up very well against Zep (Rush was actually winning for a while, but I think in the end Zep took the lead... however, I don't really remember how the Renaissance one ended up).

Well....no surprise that Floyd is winning...one of those iconic bands that the 'fan boys' always defend.
I think Atavachron said the 'both votes' should be split up;.....why? IMO it's a valid position if one likes both bands equally. As a matter of fact I don't play Floyd much these days. Been burned out on them for some years now and tend to play more Procol when I do play either band.
Having said that Floyd is certainly far and away the more influential band and 'superstar' (one of the so-called big 6...) here due to various reasons. Other than Gilmore I always thought their levels of musicianship were overrated but each to their own. I prefer the keyboard work in Procol by their two great players and Trower back in the day interested me every bit as much as Gilmore though he hasn't changed or grown  much over the years and Gilmore has progressed in some ways.

I think I'll go listen to Shine On Brightly and not DSOTM.

Love the Procols.....been on a post-Trower kick the past few months - there's a lot more to the discography than the first three albums.  Love the Floyd.....not many prog fans who don't, but I think I get off the boat at Animals.  I've never dug the Wall; thought the Final Cut was better but the second half is bogged down in similar sounding acoustic numbers (except Not Now, John! - heaviest and best number on the record)......and the final two albums were folly - some solid stuff mixed in with a LOT of filler.  Still, Gilmour's filler beats a helluva lot of shyte that passes for music these days.

So, who wins?  Call it a draw.
