well I think that this group does not have anything to do in Progarchives.com. like nigthwish they make boring and dirty Doom Metal. I have listened to several songs of them and doubt of my position does not fit to me. LONG LIFE TO THE REALLYPROGRESSIVE ROCK ..!! -------------  |

 Well, if you think The Gathering are doom, then you don't know the genre. Real doom is worthwhile.

You might be confusing them with the Death Metal band "The Gathering". The "The Gathering" listed in the archives don't use double drums, at least I cannot recall any song that does. Anyway, they're a great band and are really progressive. They started as a Gothic Metal band and have progressed quite significantly. Listen to "How to Measure a Planet", it's awesome. Up till 95', The Gathering were a Doom Metal band. They were fairly innovative in the genre in their extensive use of synths, but yes, they weren't prog. BUT, starting from the album Mandylion which came out that year, and up until now, the Gathering have moved further into Gothic/Progressive/Experimental Rock. This can be clearly seen in their albums "How to Measure a Planet" and "If_Then_Else". It's quite incredible, actually, but this band pretty much reinvents itself in every new album. So please don't be quick to judge them because of who they WERE. ------------- 'Anyways, since my "Death Star" laser was invented by the noted Cambridge physicist, Dr.Parsons, I thought we'd name it in his honor - "The Alan Parsons Project"...' |

It's exactly like Vonarga said, they used to do doom or gothic metal, but later on in a quite experimental and innovative way. I like very much Mandylion, Nighttime Birds and If then else. Later on they started to introduce some ambient electronic elements, which was not so much my cup of tea anymore. Anyway since Max obviously likes them, it's up to him whether they are here or not, it's his site!

Progressive with a small P, definitely: they started out as doomdeath metal, then added Floydian and space rock touches, then incorporated industrial edges and finally moved towards a trip hop-influenced sound. Progressive with a capital P, not really, although they are certainly proggy. All their albums are interesting, extremely accomplished and well worth hearing. |

The Gathering is more progressive than Within Temptation (the last band isn't mentioned at progarchives and what I have heard of it I think that's correct). ------------- Right down the line |

Not Prog? Listen to 'Probably built in the Fifties' from the cd 'How To Measure a Planet'. Not Symphonic? Listen to the cd 'Mandylion'.
