So, I am becoming very interested in the post rock/metal genre ever since I heard Part the Second. I also enjoy the album by the Pax Cecilia. So I think that I am at the tip of the iceberg that leads to the center of the earth (probably a post rock band name Tongue) Since every journey needs a beginning, I would like some recomendations of some post rock/metal bands. If it helps, the ones I know of are Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the Pax Cecilia, and that Icelandic one with the fetus on one of their albums.

Side question: What is the difference between post rock and math rock?

Post Rock and Math Rock and completely different genres. You'll get to know Math Rock better after hearing a few bands, it has an unmistakable sound:

Now, back to Post Rock...

For Post Rock, check out the albums where these pieces came from:

That should keep you busy for a while.

Part the Second is not Post Metal Gods damnit!!Angry At least half the bands in Exp/Post Metal are there under Experimental and have nothing to do with Post Metal, maudlin of the Well being one of them.

Anyway, I cant help much with Post Rock, but as far as Post Metal goes try these:
Isis- Wavering Radient, Panoptican
Cult of Luna- Salvation, Somwhere Along the Highway, Eternal Kingdom
Minsk- Embers
Neurosis- Through Silver in Blood
*Shels- Sea of the Dying Dhow
Pelican- The Fire in our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw
Cancer Conspiracy- Omega

Samples sound awesome, so what are some of the major names I should know (what are the bands that I should really look for, or ones that I should avoid)? This question is more opinionated, of course.

For math rock all I can say is Don Caballero.

For post rock, heck there's always this post I had in a thread awhile ago...

Godspeed, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky... and there are alot of lesser known bands that are great such as Milhaven, The Monroe Transfer, Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson, and The American Dollar.

Maybeshewill - is really great, the song here on PA is quite good.
And So I Watch You From Afar -  AWESOME is a suitable description, a little more Math Rock-y though.
If you haven't already heard it, () by Sigur Rós is one of my favorite albums.
Mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People.

My post rock journey ended about 3 minutes after it started.  Not good.  But good luck to you finding whatever creams your twinkie.
