Mike Portnoy posted the following Faceboook status today. I was pretty psyched when I read it:

"VERY excited about a new project I am working on with one my fav singers in the world and my good buddy Sir Russell Allen...wait til you hear this sh*t!!"

Oh he got a new job, cool. I don't particularly like Portnoy but I'd hate to see the guy working at McDonald's or something LOL

The full lineup:

Mike Portnoy: Drums

Dave LaRue: Bass
Steve Morse: Guitar
Russell Allen: Vocals

An unholy fusion of symphonic prog, jazz, and power metal.

Dregsatlantic X

BELIEVE.

That's the best part!!!Tongue

I wonder if this is the same as the project with Neal and Steve.  I kind of hope not, because I was looking forward to another Spock's Beardish project.  But TBH if it is the same project that would be epic too.

I'm pretty sure this is a separate project from the one with the Morses. The Morse project involves Neal Morse, Steve Morse, Mike Portnoy, Dave LaRue and Casey McPherson as the vocalist.

I can't wait to see what musicians are involved in this project. I love both Portnoy and Allen, so it already sounds promising! Mike just doesn't know how to take a break, does he?

I'd like to see them do something other than "mainstream" progressive metal.  It's not likely, but I'd like to hear Portnoy do a bit of experimenting.  And Russell Allen is versatile enough that they wouldn't have to just to do a DT and Symphony X mix. Maybe the other musicians will help with that.

Let's face it: "super groups" mostly suck.

Transatlantic certainly don't. So I don't think this will either.

See also: The Tangent. Had their roots as a super group before they became Tillison's solo band.

Hope this doesn't mean the next Symphony X album is on hold.

Not only does Transatlantic not suck, I actually prefer it to The Flower Kings and Hogarth-era Marillion.

I don't have the least bit of cynicism about whatever they're cooking up.
