Just bands (no solo artists), and in no particular order:

- the Decemberists
- Kansas (70s lineup)
- Proto-Kaw
- Godspeed You! Black Emperor
- Pearls Before Swine
- Yes
- Supertramp
- Cerberus Shoal
- Faun Fables
- Smell of Incense
- Will-o-the Wisp

Sorry, couldn't stop at just 10.  Nya Ljudbolaget, Carol of Harvest and Ramases might have made this list if they'd have cranked out a few more albums before disappearing.  In the Labyrinth is up there too but technically that's a solo act with lots of accompaniment.

4. Van der Graaf Generator / Peter Hammill
5. Vanden Plas
6. Dream Theater
7. Mars Volta

Like many of us it changes from time to time so this list is just at the moment. For the hell of it I'll list my favorite album by each band in parenthesis, again this changes often too but these are my favorite albums by them at this point.

1.Rush (Moving Pictures)
2. Iron Maiden ( Powerslave)
3. The Beatles (currently a tie between abbey road, revolver and rubber soul)
4. Yes (close to the edge)
5. Genesis ( tie between seling england by the pound and a trick of the tail)
6. Dream Theater ( falling into infinity)
7. King Crimson ( in the court of the crimson king)
8. The Mars Volta ( deloused in the comatorium)
9. Radio Head ( tie between hail to the thief and kid a)
10. Tool( Aenima)

1-Floyd
2-Queen
3-Iron Maiden
4-Beatles
5-Jethro Tull
6-Genesis
7-Kayak
8-ELP
9-Kansas
10-King Crimson

Maiden and Beatles aren't really progresive, but they appear on PA, that's why I included them.

Only bands that are commonly associated with the term progressive.

The first 6 was easy to pick:

Genesis
Camel
Gentle Giant
Saga
Magma
Steve Hackett

The rest is harder...

The Moody Blues
Barclay James Harvest
Höyry-Kone
Marillion
Yes
Clannad (always thought they were referred to as partly proggy?)
Jethro Tull

That makes 6+7 = 13.
I want to add Art Zoyd, but still haven't heard enough of them.
Godspeed You!Black Emperor is "post-rock", so I wont add them (not that they're not progressive).

edit: Added Jethro Tull

Let's not forget the two albums that started the prog end of things for Rush - A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres (although purists might maintain that the two albums before those masterpieces were the beginning of things).
